Chapter 1 - The Arrival

Kael finds himself surrounded by only darkness. He could not see anything or move, and to him it felt like eternity was gone just like that.

'What's happening to me?' Kael thought as the darkness stretched on, and vision didn't help him in the slightest.

'Oh right, I died back there, and this appears to be the last spark of my consciousness.' Back on Earth, Kael was a college dropout and died in a car accident, now drifting in the abyss.

A blinding light tore through the darkness, yanking Kael into a place he was not familiar with; the place was far from ordinary. Now he stood before a strange room. It had the appearance of medieval-era architecture.

"Did I perhaps transmigrate?" Kael thought as he scanned the room and soon stood before a mirror. The mirror reflected a young man with white hair and violet eyes; he had striking features and wore a white linen shirt and black trousers. The young man wasn't model-like but more attractive than ordinary.

"While this body is not model-like…he does look quite handsome. Not in my wildest dream did I imagine getting a body like this!" Kael was visibly stunned and taken aback by his new appearance, but something troubled him in a cliche like this, where one transmigrates, they would receive the original owner's memories along with a system, but Kael didn't receive any yet.

As an answer to that, a blue system window materialized before Kael.

[The Memories of Ed Orves successfully acquired]

The system flooded his mind with each pop-up, and Kael felt pain in his head as if it were migraine pain. He had to clench his chest to just endure the pain when it subdued memories overwhelmed him; memories which weren't his own, but to this very body he now possessed.

"I'm Ed…Ed Orves the swordsman," Kael muttered and repeated the name in his mind as if to engrave it into memory. He accepted his new identity as Ed Orves; he was no longer Kael.

Without Ed, he could grasp his newly acquired memories; another window materialized.

System evaluation: You're just an ant fighting trying to shatter chains of godly beings, well goodluck you need it!

"Its just like the novels I used to read back in earth…From the beginning, i'm i'm a bottom-tier, even my own system is mocking me, just great." Ed laughed at his situation, not knowing what the system was talking about, chains of godly beings.

"Aside from HP, stamina, and strength, what the hell is that soul thing? Its first time I'm seeing the soul stat." Ed tried to tap on the soul thing by thinking inside his mind, but nothing happened; it didn't bother Ed much.

"Blood Torment," he tapped on the skill menu, and there was only one skill called 'Blood Torment.' The name itself sounded grim and dark.

"Blood torment: In exchange for devouring souls and burning for eternity, it grants immense power, but the user constantly hears murmuring voices." …Did I perhaps come across a corrupted power? What does devouring soul mean? Am I killing a person? Ed pondered inwardly.

[Not always you're not killing, but the person whose soul you devour would become noticeably weak.] The system voice rang beside Ed's ears.

"Is that a permanent effect?" Ed asked as he raised his eyebrows upward.

[No, it's not. The person will suffer for a week until they're normal like usual. The system replied.

Knock Knock Knock!!!

A sharp knock on the door pulled Ed from his reverie. When he opened, there stood a young man in his mid 20's. He had auburn hair and violet eyes just like Ed's own. He was Varik Orves' elder brother of Ed.

"Ed its time," Varik said

"Alright." In response, Ed took the bag, rested on his bed, and followed Varik in kowtow. They soon reached outside, and there stood a man in a suit behind him. It seemed like some kind of vehicle for public transport. When Ed and Varik came, he bowed slightly and opened the door of the vehicle. The vehicle was huge and resembled a bus; its front was of a bullet train, and in various spots, there were pipes bent upward from which blueish smoke radiated. It smelt like burnt wood.

"Ed, see you during vacation. Study well in the academy and become a Spirit Awakener. Everyone at Hope expects much from you," Varik said as he smiled

"Yeah, I'll make you guys proud," Ed spoke with the same enthusiasm. For a fraction, Ed reflected a complex emotion which Varik didn't catch.

"Visit home during vacation, don't get attached to the academy too much." Varik laughed as he gave Ed his farewell. In response, Ed simply nodded.

Inside the vehicle, there were youths his age, people he didn't recognize from his memories.

"Ed Orves, we are already late because of you. Take your seat according to your ID." A hoarse voice walked toward Ed and spoke in a manner not harsh or comforting, simply indifferent, and handed Ed his ID. He was in his late 40's. He had black wavy hair, broad shoulders, and a scar in the shape of a cross shaped in his forehead. He looked quite intimidating.

"Understood," Ed spoke and took the ID. The ID had his name, the year he was in, and his seat number. Simply put, it was a temporary ID given to students.

"Seat no.88…5"

"Ah, here it is." It didn't take much difficulty to find his seat. Beside his seat, there was another youth much taller than Ed himself. He had scarlet red hair, golden hair, and striking, handsome features.

"I'm Ed Orves, nice to meet you." Ed took the initiative and introduced himself as he sat.

"I'm Raelith, Raelith Graywet. Let's have a crazy year together!" Raelith spoke in unnatural Enthusiasm contradiction to his noble appearance.

The vehicle departed, and it took about 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach their destination.

"Were here, students descend one by one." The same hoarse voice spoke, and the students did exactly what they didn;t wanted any conflict the first day upon arrival.
