Chapter 9 - LINES YOU CAN’T UNCROSS

The moment Vanessa said it, the air changed.

He's lying to you.

The words didn't just linger—they settled, heavy and suffocating, wrapping around Lena's thoughts before she could push them away.

"About what?" Lena asked again, her voice quieter this time—but steadier.

Vanessa smiled, slow and deliberate, like she had all the time in the world.

"Everything," she repeated.

Aiden stepped forward, placing himself slightly in front of Lena.

A protective move.

Or a controlling one.

At this point, Lena wasn't sure anymore.

"That's enough," he said, his tone sharp.

Vanessa tilted her head, unfazed. "Is it? Or are you just afraid she'll start asking the right questions?"

"I said leave."

"And I said I'm not finished."

Lena's gaze moved between them, tension tightening in her chest.

"Stop," she said suddenly.

Both of them looked at her.

"I'm not a child," Lena continued. "If there's something to say, say it."

Vanessa's lips curved slightly.

"There is," she said. "But the question is—do you actually want to hear it?"

Lena hesitated.

Just for a second.

But Aiden noticed.

"Don't," he said quietly.

That single word carried weight.

Warning.

Authority.

Something else she couldn't quite name.

Lena looked at him.

Really looked at him.

And for the first time—

She saw it clearly.

Fear.

Not for himself.

But for her.

That should have comforted her.

Instead—

It made everything worse.

"I want to know," Lena said.

Aiden's jaw tightened.

"Lena—"

"No," she cut in. "I'm done being kept in the dark."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Vanessa took a step closer, her voice lowering.

"He didn't just end our engagement," she said. "He destroyed it."

Lena's heart skipped.

"What does that mean?"

"It means," Vanessa continued, "the people he's dealing with now? The ones watching you?"

Her eyes darkened slightly.

"They're not just enemies."

Aiden's voice cut through immediately.

"That's enough."

But Vanessa didn't stop.

"They used to be his allies."

The words hit harder than anything else.

Lena's breath caught.

"What?"

Aiden grabbed Vanessa's arm, his grip firm.

"You're done," he said.

She pulled away, glaring at him.

"No," she snapped. "You don't get to control this."

Lena stepped forward.

"Wait," she said. "What does that mean? Allies?"

Vanessa looked at her, something almost like pity flickering in her eyes.

"It means he made choices," she said. "Dangerous ones. The kind you don't come back from."

Lena turned to Aiden.

"Is that true?"

Silence.

That silence said everything.

Her chest tightened.

"You lied to me," she said quietly.

"I didn't lie," Aiden replied. "I withheld information."

"That's the same thing!"

"No," he said. "It's not."

Lena let out a sharp breath, stepping back slightly.

"You let me walk into this without knowing what I was really dealing with."

"I told you it was dangerous."

"Not like this!" she shot back. "You made it sound manageable. Controlled. This isn't controlled, Aiden—this is chaos."

Vanessa watched them, her expression unreadable now.

"Now you see it," she said softly.

"Leave," Aiden repeated, his voice colder this time.

Vanessa hesitated.

Then finally—

She turned and walked away.

But the damage?

It was already done.

Lena stood there, her mind spinning.

"You were involved with them," she said slowly. "The same people who are threatening me now."

Aiden didn't deny it.

"Why?" she asked.

A pause.

Then—

"Because it was necessary."

Lena stared at him.

"That's your answer? Necessary?"

"You wouldn't understand."

"Then explain it!" she demanded.

Aiden ran a hand through his hair, frustration finally breaking through his usual composure.

"It was business," he said. "Power. Influence. Control."

"And you thought that wouldn't come back to you?"

"I handled it."

"No," Lena said, shaking her head. "You didn't. Because now I'm involved."

Silence.

And that?

That was the truth neither of them could ignore.

"You should leave," Aiden said suddenly.

Lena froze.

"What?"

"You should walk away," he continued. "End the agreement."

Her chest tightened.

"And what? Pretend none of this happened?"

"Yes."

Lena let out a soft, disbelieving laugh.

"You really think it's that simple?"

"It can be."

"No," she said firmly. "It can't."

A pause.

Heavy.

Final.

"Because if I leave now," Lena continued, "those people don't just forget about me."

Aiden didn't respond.

"They already know who I am," she added. "They already see me as connected to you."

That was the line.

The one they couldn't uncross.

"You pulled me into this," she said. "And now you're telling me to walk away like it's nothing?"

"I'm trying to protect you."

"By pushing me out?" she challenged.

Aiden stepped closer.

"This isn't a game, Lena."

"I know that," she said. "That's why I'm not running."

That caught him off guard.

"You're not thinking clearly."

"No," she said quietly. "For the first time, I am."

A pause.

"I'm already in this," she continued. "Whether I like it or not. So instead of shutting me out, maybe you should start treating me like I actually matter in this situation."

Aiden stared at her.

Something shifted in his expression.

Something real.

"You don't know what you're asking for," he said.

"Then show me," she replied.

Silence fell again.

But this time—

It felt different.

Not like a wall.

But like a threshold.

A line.

And they were both standing right on it.

"If I tell you everything," Aiden said slowly, "there's no going back."

Lena held his gaze.

Her heart racing.

Her mind screaming at her to walk away.

But she didn't.

"I'm already past that point," she said.

And just like that—

The line was crossed.

Because whatever came next—

Whatever truths Aiden was hiding—

Whatever danger was waiting—

There was no undoing it.

No escaping it.

No pretending this was just a deal anymore.

This was real.

And they were both in too deep to turn back.
