Criminal cases didn't occur very frequently within Tokyo, so after just seven days on the job, Ritsu welcomed his first day off. Although it was only a single day, for officers in the First Investigation Division, it was a rare luxury.

He slept straight through until evening. Groggy, Ritsu climbed out of bed and headed into the bathroom. After washing up, he finally felt a bit more awake.

He had stayed up all night reading chemistry books the night before, going straight through until morning. As a result, he hadn't eaten for over twenty hours and was now absolutely starving.

During workdays, he was always in a suit and tie. On his day off, he naturally opted for something more casual. He picked out a white long-sleeve T-shirt with a printed design, layered with a pure white lightweight jacket from Facetasm.

His white tapered pants featured red and green stripes down the sides, and he paired them with beige sneakers, giving the outfit a bit more color instead of looking too plain.

Pushing open the bedroom door and stepping into the living room, the quiet atmosphere felt somewhat unfamiliar. Rei had moved out into the staff dormitory due to work, and Hiro rarely came by for the same reason.

After gathering his things, Ritsu headed down to the underground parking garage. Instead of driving the flashy supercar that turned heads everywhere, he chose a more low-key white Infiniti EX25.

Before starting the engine, he popped a lychee-flavored lollipop into his mouth. After going so long without food, he needed a bit of sugar.

He drove to 6-chome, Beika Town, where there was an izakaya called Yamata no Orochi. The name inevitably reminded one of the mythical eight-headed serpent from Japanese folklore and, naturally, its rival, Susanoo.

Sure enough, right across from Yamata no Orochi was a yakiniku restaurant named Susanoo.

Pretty interesting. Though at night, Susanoo was clearly less popular than Yamata no Orochi… Could it be that the sea god couldn't defeat the monster after all?

Jinpei, dressed in a dark blue long-sleeve sweatshirt, spotted Ritsu at the entrance and immediately waved. A pair of black sunglasses rested on his dark brown hair.

"Ritsu! Over here!"

Ritsu walked over quickly, pulled out a chair, and sat down. "Sorry I'm late."

"No worries, the boss isn't here yet," Kenji said with a smile. "He ran into an elderly lady having a sudden heart attack and took her to the hospital. She's out of danger now, and he's on the train over."

"That really sounds like something Wataru would do," Hiro said with a gentle smile.

After graduating from the police academy, they had all been assigned to different departments. Jinpei and Kenji both chose to join the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit under the First Security Division. Hiro was currently in the First Unit of the Second Investigation Division, handling white-collar crimes.

As for Wataru, since he had entered the academy through the non-career track, he was currently working at a local police station under the Metropolitan Police Department. He would likely spend six months to a year there before being transferred to the main department.

Rei, on the other hand, had been placed in the Public Security Bureau's Fourth Division thanks to his excellent grades and talent for intelligence gathering. His role focused on data collection, analysis, and coordination with local police.

Jinpei picked up his draft beer and gulped down more than half the glass. "Honestly, when I joined the bomb squad, I thought it'd be pretty laid-back… Who knew we'd be doing constant bomb disposal training assigned by our superiors? It's basically like being back in the academy!"

"If we're idle, that means there's peace," Kenji chuckled. "If we were defusing bombs every day, Tokyo's public safety would be in serious trouble. I'd rather be bored."

Rei glanced at Ritsu, who was sipping Calpis, and said, "You're probably the most talked-about among us right now, Ritsu. Even in Public Security, I've heard about how you solved one criminal case and cracked two previously unsolved major cases in just a week."

"Same here," Hiro added. Thinking of a female colleague his age who had enthusiastically talked about Ritsu, he teased, "I even promised someone in my division I'd get your autograph."

"I'm not some celebrity, what would they want my autograph for?"

"With that face, it's a waste not to be one," Kenji immediately chimed in with a mischievous idea. "How about wearing a wig and doing it as a side job? Jinpei and I are pretty free, we could be your managers."

"Hey, what are you guys talking about that's so funny?"

Wataru arrived, wearing a red athletic T-shirt with a black shirt over it, placing a hand on Jinpei's shoulder as he asked.

"Boss, you're finally here! Hurry up and order, I'm starving!"

"Yeah, yeah, let's eat. I skipped lunch on purpose just to make Ritsu treat us!"

"??"

Ritsu looked puzzled. "Why am I paying? I wasn't even late."

Hiro suppressed a laugh. "You have the highest rank among us, so you make the most money. Naturally, you should take on a bit more responsibility. Besides, you don't have a girlfriend. You don't need to save up for an engagement ring."

That one hit like a critical blow to a single guy.

"…Don't you guys not have girlfriends either?"

"Exactly," Rei said with a smirk, resting his chin on his hand. "Which means, aside from Wataru, the only one left who arrived last is you."

He then turned to the waiter. "We'll take four more servings of grilled chicken meatballs with sauce and three skewers of chicken with scallions."

"Add some salt-grilled chicken skewers for Ritsu-ya's favorites! Oh, and the chicken soup noodles here are great, let's get three bowls to try."

"I'll have a serving of yukhoe and some squid tempura… and two skewers of grilled chicken skin to go with the drinks."

Ritsu shrugged helplessly. Well, these were the friends he chose, what could he do? He didn't mind paying anyway. Money was meant to be spent, after all. Watching the numbers in his bank account go down only motivated him to earn more.

Since they had already ordered all his favorite dishes, he simply sipped his drink and waited for the food. He was too hungry to even join in their "catching up" conversation.

Once he had eaten enough to take the edge off his hunger, Ritsu began recounting the three cases he had solved.

After hearing about the first case, Wataru frowned in disgust. "That guy's absolute trash. She gave up studying abroad to take care of the family, and he still didn't cherish her. Tch, fifteen years feels way too light."

"Well, when he gets out, he'll have nothing left. Over sixty, no wife, no child, that's punishment enough."

Ritsu continued with the other two cases. In both, he had revisited the crime scenes and picked up on subtle clues. One case had direct evidence and was relatively straightforward. The other lacked direct evidence, and if he hadn't broken through the suspect's psychological defenses during repeated interrogations, there would've been no way to convict him.

"Let's meet up here more often when we're free," Kenji suggested. "The food's great, it's affordable, and their wasabi sake is amazing."

"Sounds good. Though it depends on Ritsu's schedule, he's probably the busiest one."

"Haha, that's what you get for being in the First Investigation Division!"

"Alright then, let's call it a day. Class of Onizuka… dismissed!"

"Yes, sir~~"
