Chapter 4 - Shelter rules

The reinforced shelter doors sealed with a heavy hydraulic hiss, cutting off the distant screams and moans from the upper levels. Sub-level 3 of Horizon Central Academy had been designed as a crisis bunker, thick concrete walls, independent air filtration, emergency power, and enough stored rations to last a small group for weeks. Right now, it held nearly sixty survivors: students, faculty, security personnel, and a handful of maintenance staff who had made it down in time.

Ted stayed near the back of the group as they were herded into the main hall. The air smelled of sweat, fear, and the faint ozone of overworked generators. Makeshift cots lined one wall. A medical station had been set up under harsh LED lights where two nurses worked frantically on the injured.

A tall, stern woman in a security captain's uniform stepped forward, her voice cutting through the murmurs like a blade.

"Listen up! I'm Captain Reyes. This shelter is now under martial law. No one leaves without authorization. We have limited supplies, limited ammo, and limited patience. Rule one: report any bites or suspicious symptoms immediately. Rule two: everyone contributes, sorting supplies, reinforcing barricades, or standing watch. Rule three: panic gets you ejected. Understood?"

Mumbled agreements rippled through the crowd. Ted kept his head down, nodding along with the others. The "Normal Appearance" buff was still active, keeping his skin from looking too pale under the bright lights. He could feel eyes on him anyway, Marcus and his two friends had positioned themselves near the front, already talking quietly with the guards.

Elena stood a few meters away, checking the magazine of her scavenged pistol with practiced ease. She caught Ted's glance and gave a small nod, but said nothing.

Captain Reyes continued assigning tasks. "Medical team, triage the wounded. Security, inventory weapons. Students, you're on supply detail and watch rotations. Kane, your group handled yourselves upstairs. You're on perimeter reinforcement."

Marcus smirked, clearly enjoying the recognition.

Ted was assigned to help sort emergency rations with a small mixed group of younger students. It was mindless work, stacking boxes of nutrient bars and water pouches, but it kept him close to other people and away from questions. As he worked, the System remained quiet for once, no new daily quest popping up yet. The twenty Necro Essence from the side quest had already been added, bringing his total to 64.

He allowed himself a moment of cautious relief. For the first time since the outbreak started, he wasn't actively running or fighting. But the hunger was still there, a low, persistent itch beneath his ribs. Every time someone nearby coughed or moved too close, his enhanced senses picked up the warm pulse of living blood. It was distracting. Unsettling.

Hours passed. The emergency lights dimmed to night-cycle mode. Most survivors tried to sleep on the cots or against the walls, exhaustion winning over fear. Ted volunteered for the first watch shift near one of the secondary access tunnels, a narrow corridor that led to an old utility exit. It was quiet work: sit, watch the sealed door, report anything unusual.

Elena ended up on the same shift, posted a few meters away with her pistol resting on her lap. She looked tired but alert, short dark hair messy from the chaos earlier.

"You don't talk much," she said after a long silence, voice low so it wouldn't carry.

Ted shrugged, keeping his eyes on the door. "Not much to say. Just trying to stay alive."

"Most people are crying or praying right now. You seem… calm." Her eyes flicked to his arm where the bite had been. The sleeve covered it completely now. "You really took one down alone upstairs?"

"Like I said, luck and adrenaline." Ted forced a small, tired smile. "What about you? That pistol looks like you know how to use it."

"Family training. Dad was ex-military before the implants took over everything." She paused, then added quietly, "City's gone dark outside. Comms are patchy, but we caught a broadcast before signal died. Whole sectors are overrun. They're calling it the Necro-Virus. Government's talking about orbital strikes if it spreads beyond the megacity walls."

Ted's stomach tightened. Orbital strikes meant they might bomb the entire city to contain it. Time was running out faster than he thought.

A soft notification flashed in his vision, visible only to him.

*[Daily Quest Reset: Feed the Hunger]*

*Absorb necro-energy from 3 Infected while remaining undetected.*

*Reward: +15 Necro Essence, random minor stat boost.*

*Failure: Hunger Frenzy debuff.*

The timer showed it would reset at midnight, only a few hours away. Ted's jaw clenched. He couldn't complete this inside the shelter. He needed to get out, even if just for a short time.

Elena noticed his sudden tension. "You okay?"

"Yeah. Just… thinking about how long the supplies will last." He lied smoothly, surprised at how easily it came.

She nodded, accepting it for now. "We'll figure it out. Captain Reyes seems competent. And guys like Marcus are useful in a fight, even if they're assholes."

Ted didn't reply. Useful. That was one word for Marcus. Another was "threat." If Marcus ever suspected something was off about him, things could turn ugly fast.

Around 11 PM, the watch shift changed. Ted was relieved early and told to get some rest. Instead of heading to the cots, he lingered near the utility tunnel entrance, pretending to check supplies stacked there. The secondary access door was sealed but had a manual override panel, something maintenance staff used for repairs. With his boosted strength and new agility, he might be able to slip out and back in without triggering major alarms.

But it was risky. Very risky.

He waited until the new watch pair moved to the far side of the hall. Then, quietly, he approached the override panel.

*[Warning: Leaving safe zone increases exposure risk. Quest opportunities detected outside.]*

Ted hesitated, fingers hovering over the controls. The hunger was growing again, sharper now that the buff was starting to fade. His skin felt cooler. If he stayed inside too long without feeding, the Frenzy debuff could hit at the worst moment, in front of everyone.

A faint moan echoed from somewhere far beyond the door, distant, but clear to his enhanced hearing.

He made his decision.

With a soft click, he disengaged the lock and slipped through the narrow gap, pulling the door almost closed behind him. The utility tunnel stretched ahead, dimly lit by dying backup strips. Debris and a few scattered bodies lay ahead.

Ted moved quickly, heart pounding. He had maybe thirty minutes before someone noticed he was gone.

Hunger Sense lit up immediately, three infected signatures ahead, weak and slow.

This was his chance.

He gripped a loose metal pipe he'd grabbed from the shelter supplies and advanced.

The first infected, a security guard turned shambler, turned toward him with a guttural growl. Ted struck fast and clean, crushing the skull. He absorbed the energy in seconds.

*[Necro Essence +8]*

Two more to go.

As he moved deeper into the tunnel, the System pinged again.

*[Side Quest Update: Blend In.. Temporary buff extended if you return undetected.]*

Ted finished the second infected quickly, the cold surge of essence making his movements smoother. But as he approached the third, footsteps sounded from behind him, back toward the shelter door.

Someone had followed.
