Chapter 29 - Glass cage

The containment wing was colder and quieter than the rest of the hub. Thick reinforced glass separated Ted's cell from the corridor, while faint blue emergency lighting cast long shadows across the sterile floor. In adjacent cells, captured mutated zombies slammed mindlessly against their barriers, one with armored plating, another with dripping acidic veins. Their moans were muffled but constant, a grim reminder of what waited if Ted's mask ever slipped completely.

Ted sat on the edge of the narrow cot, elbows on his knees. The hunger from Enhanced Regeneration I gnawed at him like a living thing. Limited feeding over the past days had made it sharper. He could feel the subtle changes in his body, the faint urge to reach through the glass toward the nearest infected for essence.

A small intercom crackled to life.

"Harlan, this is Dr. Thorne. We'll begin with non-invasive neural mapping in thirty minutes. Remain cooperative and this process will be… tolerable. Any resistance will result in sedatives."

Ted didn't reply. Instead, he opened his status window privately.

**Host: Ted Harlan**

**Level: 2**

**Strength: 22**

**Agility: 20**

**Vitality: 22**

**Necro Essence: 654**

**Skills:**

- Basic Undead Regeneration (Passive - Low)

- Enhanced Regeneration I (Passive)

- Minor Flesh Crafting (Active – Upgraded)

- Basic Horde Sense (Passive)

- Basic Horde Command (Active – Weak)

The new **Flesh Crafting Upgrade** gave him more flexibility, but inside a monitored glass cell, using any ability carried massive risk. Cameras watched every angle. Sensors monitored vital signs.

He tested a tiny, careful activation of **Minor Flesh Crafting**, spending only 10 Essence to smooth his skin tone and dampen any unnatural pallor. The change was microscopic, enough to buy a little time.

The System responded with a warning:

*[Containment monitoring active. High risk of detection for active skills. Hunger baseline increasing. Recommend discreet feeding or evolution soon.]*

Thirty minutes later, the tests began.

Technicians in hazmat suits wheeled equipment to the glass. Dr. Thorne directed from outside, voice calm and clinical.

"Relax. This is just a passive neural scan. We're looking for command signatures."

Ted lay back as instructed while lights and sensors swept over him. He pushed every bit of control into masking, dampening limbic echoes from recent Horde Command usage and smoothing regenerative patterns.

The scan lasted nearly an hour. Dr. Thorne's frown deepened with each new reading.

"Remarkable. The interference patterns are consistent with external influence capability. Not full control yet, but the potential is there. Colonel, this subject could be the key to understanding variant coordination… or a weapon against it."

Colonel Voss's voice came through the intercom. "Keep him stable. No aggressive testing yet. We'll decide his status after full analysis."

Marcus's voice cut in from somewhere in the background. "He's dangerous. You saw what happened on the wall. Don't give him time to turn on us from inside."

The tests ended for the day, but the monitoring never stopped. Cameras tracked every movement. Ted could feel eyes on him constantly.

Late in the night cycle, when the lights dimmed further, a soft tap came from the corridor. Elena had managed to slip past the outer guards for a brief moment. She pressed close to the glass, voice barely audible through the intercom slot.

"I'm working on a plan. There's talk of a supply convoy leaving in two days, high risk, lots of chaos. If I can get assigned and create a distraction…"

Ted placed his hand on the glass opposite hers. "Be careful. Don't risk yourself too much. I can hold here a little longer. The power is still growing, I just need one chance to feed properly."

Their Ally Bond sent a warm pulse of determination between them.

Before she could say more, footsteps approached. Elena slipped away into the shadows just as a guard passed.

Ted leaned back on the cot, mind racing.

He opened the shop and made a careful, low-profile purchase to prepare for whatever came next:

*[Undead Resilience I purchased (120 Essence). Remaining: 524.]*

*Passive damage resistance increased. Minor reduction in visible injury signs.*

A subtle toughness settled into his body. It wouldn't make him invincible, but it might help him survive forced tests or an escape attempt.

As the night deepened, the System delivered a new, urgent notification:

*[Containment Escape Branch Unlocked.]*

*Option 1: Subvert from within (access research data).]*

*Option 2: Force breakout during next external crisis.*

*Hidden Reward for either: Accelerated evolution toward Level 3 + Necromantic Path options.*

Ted stared at the glowing blue text in the darkness of his cell.

The glass cage was meant to contain a threat.

Instead, it had given him time to think.

Time to plan.

And time for the hunger and the power to grow stronger.

Outside, the dead continued their siege on the walls.

Inside, Ted Harlan was preparing his own.
