The morning light crawled through the salt-crusted window of Aizen's room like it had no particular place to be — which was precisely how Aizen felt about mornings in general.
He lay flat on his back, one arm dangling off the edge of his cot, the other draped over his eyes as if shielding himself from the very concept of being awake. The sounds of Thalvoss filtered in from outside — the distant cry of dockworkers calling to one another across the piers, the heavy groan of anchored ships rocking against their moorings, the sharp, briny smell of the sea pressing through every crack in the walls. It was the same symphony every morning in this city. Aizen had long since stopped hearing it.
What he could not ignore, however, was his grandmother.
"Aizen."
Her voice came from the other side of the thin wooden door — calm, unhurried, and carrying within it the particular weight of a woman who had lived long enough to know that patience was simply delayed insistence.
He did not move.
"Aizen."
"I'm sleeping," he offered, quite helpfully.
A pause. Then the door swung open with the slow, deliberate confidence of someone who had never once been deterred by a closed door in her life. Nara — seventy-one years old, barely five feet tall, with silver hair pinned loosely at the back of her head and eyes the colour of deep harbour water — stood in the frame and looked at her grandson the way one looks at a knot that simply refuses to come undone.
"You were sleeping," she corrected. "Now you are wasting the morning."
Aizen cracked one eye open. "What's the difference?"
"The difference," she said, setting a folded cloth on the foot of his cot, "is that I need bread, and your aunt's shop opened an hour ago, and I am not walking that hill with my knees the way they are."
He groaned — a long, theatrical sound — and sat up. His dark hair stuck up at odd angles. He rubbed his face with both hands and blinked at the room as though it had appeared without warning.
"Bread," he repeated.
"A full loaf. The seeded one, not the flat kind. And tell Mira I said she cuts them too thin." Nara turned and walked back toward the kitchen without waiting for a response, already done with the conversation.
Aizen pulled on his shirt, laced his boots with the minimum effort required to keep them on his feet, and shuffled out into the morning.
Thalvoss was not a beautiful city in the way that painters liked to depict port towns — all golden light and white sails and laughing fishermen. It was beautiful the way the sea itself was beautiful: vast, a little dangerous, and indifferent to whether you noticed or not.
The streets nearest the docks smelled of brine and old wood and the particular sourness of fish left a half-hour too long in the sun. The buildings leaned against one another like old friends too tired to stand straight, their walls patched with mismatched stone and faded blue paint that the sea air stripped away a little more each year. Seagrass grew in the cracks between the cobblestones. Enchanted lanterns — the pale, green-glowing kind that the harbour-mages kept lit year-round — still burned faintly along the main street even in daylight, casting thin emerald shadows that nobody paid any attention to anymore.
Aizen walked with his hands in his pockets, taking the long route, because the long route passed the water.
He always took the long route.
He stopped for a moment at the low sea-wall at the edge of Crestline Avenue and looked out at the bay. The water was deep jade green this morning, which meant the tidebeasts were moving somewhere far below — great, slow creatures the size of houses that drifted along the ocean floor and stirred up minerals as they went, turning the water colours that no painter had ever quite managed to capture faithfully. Nobody fished when the water was green. Everyone in Thalvoss knew that.
He watched it for a little longer than he meant to, then turned and walked on toward his aunt's shop.
Mira's bakery sat on the upper bend of Salt Lantern Road, wedged between a rope-maker's stall and a shop that sold bottled sea-light — small glass vials of luminescence harvested from the deep, used for everything from reading lamps to warding off the smaller creatures that crept up from the shallows at night. The smell of baking bread reached Aizen a full street before he arrived, which was the one thing about this errand he had no complaint with.
His aunt was a broad-shouldered woman with flour on her forearms and the expression of someone perpetually running five minutes behind schedule. She handed him the loaf before he had finished telling her what he wanted, wrapped it in brown paper, and sent him off with a wave and the message that she'd be by for dinner on Thirdsday and Nara should not cook the shellfish stew because last time it had tasted like the sea itself had given up.
Aizen tucked the loaf under his arm and headed back down the hill.
He heard the man before he saw him.
A voice — deep, rounded at the edges, the kind of voice that had spent years being projected over the noise of crowded rooms — rolled down the street from somewhere ahead. Not shouting. Not performing, exactly. Simply speaking with the absolute certainty that everyone within range would want to listen.
And they did.
By the time Aizen rounded the bend onto the lower market road, a crowd had gathered around one of the small street-side benches where vendors sometimes rested between calls. At the centre of it sat a man who looked as though he had been everywhere and come back with the wear to prove it. He was perhaps fifty, perhaps older, with a wide-brimmed hat pushed back on his head, a coat that had once been fine and was now merely interesting, and a clay cup of amber beer balanced on his knee with practiced ease. His face was weathered and deeply lined, but his eyes — Aizen noticed even from the edge of the crowd — were sharp and very much alive.
The people around him were a mixed gathering: dock-hands with their morning break, a couple of merchants' apprentices, an old woman with a basket of dried kelp, two children sitting cross-legged on the cobblestones directly at the man's feet. All of them were quiet.
Aizen slowed. Then stopped.
"— and the kings of those days were not as the kings you hear of now," the man was saying, rolling the cup slowly between his palms. "They were not men who sat in halls and sent others to do what needed doing. The great kings of the Age of Tides walked the sea roads themselves. Fought the deep things themselves." He paused, taking a slow sip of his beer. "And none of them — not one — was as terrible as Ryuk."
Someone at the edge of the crowd murmured something Aizen couldn't catch. The man smiled — not warmly.
"You know the name," he said. "Everyone knows the name, whether they admit it or not. Ryuk. King of the Sea Monsters. Lord of what lives below the light." He let that sit for a moment. "They say he was not always what he became. They say he was something older — something that existed before the sea had a name, before men built the first boat and looked at the horizon and foolishly decided to sail toward it." Another sip. "But what I am telling you about today is not Ryuk himself. What I am telling you about is what he left behind."
The crowd had gone very still.
Aizen found that he had drifted several steps closer without deciding to.
"His sword," the man said quietly.
The word landed in the silence like a stone dropped into still water.
"They call it many things in many ports. The Tidecleaver. The Black Depth. The King's Fang." The man shook his head slowly. "But its true name is simpler than all of that. It is called the Sword of Ryuk. And it is real." He looked around the gathered faces, and for just a moment his gaze passed over Aizen — direct, brief, and somehow heavier than it had any right to be. "I have spent thirty years on the water. I have spoken to men who have seen what it does to a sea that remembers it. I have read the old tide-scripts in three different ports that most of you have never heard of. And I am telling you, with the confidence of a man who has been wrong about many things in his life but is not wrong about this — the Sword of Ryuk was not destroyed. It was not lost." He paused. "It was hidden. And it is waiting."
The silence stretched another moment.
Then one of the dock-hands let out a low, skeptical laugh. "Waiting for what?"
The man took a long sip of his beer, unhurried.
"That," he said pleasantly, "is the question, isn't it."
The crowd began to murmur again — some dismissive, some intrigued, a few asking questions that overlapped one another into noise. The man answered some of them and deflected others with the ease of someone who had told this story before and knew exactly how it landed.
Aizen stood at the edge of it all, the loaf of bread tucked under his arm, and did not move.
He was not sure how long he stood there. Long enough that the shadows shifted slightly on the cobblestones. Long enough that the green had begun to fade from the water in the bay, visible at the end of the road, which meant the tidebeasts had moved on.
He was not the sort of person who believed every story told by a man with a beer on a street corner.
But there had been something in the man's voice. Not desperation. Not the showmanship of someone selling something. Something quieter than that.
Certainty.
Aizen finally turned and walked home, bread under his arm, the name sitting in the back of his mind like a stone he'd picked up without meaning to and couldn't quite put down.
The Sword of Ryuk.
He said nothing about it to his grandmother when he got back. He handed her the bread, accepted her comment that he had taken far too long, and sat down at the shop counter to sort through a new delivery of tide-pearls that had come in the evening before.
But the name stayed with him through the whole of that afternoon, quiet and persistent, the way the sea sounds when you press a shell to your ear — like something vast, breathing, and very far from finished.
