Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The Prismatic Secret

The Third Day of Silence

The breakthrough didn't come with a roar, but with a flicker. Deep within Rune's eyes, a faint, rainbow-hued light began to pulse. In the harsh glare of the midday sun, the shimmer was invisible to the guards and servants passing by, but for Rune, the world had suddenly shifted.

It had taken three days of grueling meditation, but he finally felt it—the "Damp Chill" had turned into a "Water Coating" against his skin. He had officially stepped into the Apprentice Class.

Eager to share the news, Rune sprinted toward his mother's private training sanctuary. He burst through the doors, his mouth open to shout—but the words died in his throat.

An invisible, suffocating weight slammed into him. It felt as if the very air had turned to lead, crushing the oxygen from his lungs. For a terrifying second, Rune felt like an ant standing before a collapsing mountain. He wasn't aware that Ravina was deep in her own meditation; he was simply experiencing the raw, unfiltered pressure of a Viscount's Domain.

Just as his knees began to buckle, the pressure vanished. The air snapped back to normal.

"Rune? Are you alright?" Ravina asked, her voice sharp with concern as she rose from the center of the room.

"I... I think so," Rune gasped, his face ashen.

"Next time you enter a high-noble's training space, you must announce yourself,"

Ravina warned, though she quickly stepped forward to steady him.

"That pressure was unintentional, but it can be lethal to the uninitiated."

"I... I'll remember. I definitely won't forget that,"

Rune stuttered, still feeling the phantom chill of death. He took a shaky breath and forced a grin.

"But Mom! I did it! I can sense the Ether!"

"Oh? Show me."

Rune closed his eyes, focusing on the rhythmic pull of the world's energy. As he connected with the particles, that same prismatic flicker ignited in his pupils. Ravina's expression didn't mirror his joy; instead, her face clouded with a sudden, dark intensity.

"Rune... look at my hand," she commanded, gathering a small swirl of Ether between her fingers. "Tell me what you see."

"It's a ball of light, Mom,"

Rune answered, looking at her inquisitively.

"A swirling, glowing sphere. Why?"

Ravina's breath hitched.

"As I feared. Rune, listen to me. Those below the Viscount realm are not supposed to see Ether with their eyes. They perceive it through instinct, through the skin, through the soul—but never with sight. Your entry into the Apprentice realm has awakened a hidden bloodline within you."

"Sweet!"

Rune chirped, missing the dread in her voice.

"Does that mean I have special powers?"

"RUNE!"

Ravina's voice cracked like a whip, startling him into silence. She gripped his shoulders, her gaze burning into his.

"You must listen, and you must understand. This ability is a death sentence if the wrong people see it. There are those in the higher realms who would envy such a gift—they would take you from us, cage you, and use you as a tool until there is nothing left. Do you understand?"

Rune's excitement evaporated. The weight of her words felt heavier than her domain ever could.

"Do I really have to hide it, Mom?"

"Until the day you are stronger than me—stronger than a Viscount—you must never let the world see those eyes. Not even your friends. Not even the guards."

Seeing the gravity finally sink in, Ravina immediately began a new lesson. She didn't teach him to fight that afternoon; she taught him the "Eye of Shrouding Shadows." It was a delicate technique designed to veil his pupils in a thin layer of shadow element, masking the rainbow light whenever he used his Ether.

By the time the moon rose, Rune had mastered the shroud. He was still happy to be an Apprentice, but for the first time, he understood that power wasn't just a weapon—it was a secret that could either save him or destroy him.
