Chapter 15 - The Beginning

Leo packed his bag. Food. Water. A map. A compass. A photo of Yuki he'd printed from her profile. A bottle of Black Ram not for drinking alone, but for sharing, when he finally found her. A small solar charger for his phone, though the internet was nearly gone now, and he didn't know how much longer they'd be able to message.

He stood at the door of the Victorian house, looking back at the computer one last time. The screen glowed blue that same blue light that had consumed his life for so long. But now it was just a tool. A window to a woman on the other side of the world. A bridge.

He turned it off.

He stepped outside. The sky was gray and low, the same kind of sky he'd seen a thousand times before. But it felt different now. It felt like the first day of something.

He walked east. Toward the coast. Toward Europe. Toward Asia. Toward her.

Behind him, the world lay dead and silent. Ahead of him, the unknown.

For the first time in his life, Leo Vasquez was not afraid.

He had spent ten years struggling to be someone, to make money, to earn a place in a world that had never wanted him. That world was gone now. The pressure was gone. The expectations were gone. The algorithm, the metrics, the endless competition all of it, wiped away by fire from the sky.

What remained was simpler. Harder. More honest.

He was alive. She was alive. And somewhere between the ruins of London and the ruins of Tokyo, they would find each other.

He thought of Adam and Eve. Not the biblical story he'd never been religious but the idea of it. Two people alone in a new world, tasked with beginning again. No rules. No scripts. No one to tell them who they were supposed to be.

They could be anything.

He walked faster.

The Black Ram in his pack clinked softly with each step. He smiled again that strange, unfamiliar expression and kept moving.

The road was long. The world was empty. But for the first time in a decade, Leo Vasquez had somewhere to go.

And someone to go with.
