Chapter 40 - Chapter 41: NEW RULES

Chapter 41: NEW RULES

The morning after a crisis was always strange.

Dean had survived apocalypses before—not literally, but metaphorically. Job losses. Relationship endings. The death of his mother. Each time, he'd expected the world to look different afterward, and each time he'd been surprised by how ordinary everything seemed.

The same was true here. The neighborhood looked exactly as it had before Shawn's visit. Same frozen yogurt shops. Same perfectly calibrated architecture. Same fake sunshine filtering through fake clouds.

But the rules had changed.

Dean sat at his kitchen table with his notebook open, running a private strategic assessment.

Priority 1: Power Development

Current PCI: 231 (Practitioner Tier 1)Target: 300+ (Tier 2 threshold)Timeline: Unknown, but Shawn's return creates deadline

Priority 2: Coalition Expansion

Current MAI: 10Target: 50+ (petition rights to Judge Gen)Method: Continue demon conversions, deepen human bonds

Priority 3: Evidence Gathering

Point system failures documented: Tahani's motivation weighting, Eleanor's circumstancesNeeded: Broader pattern, systemic rather than individual

Priority 4: Signature Concealment

Shawn is actively searchingMethod: Distribute philosophical engagement across coalitionRisk: Any concentrated ability use could localize the signature

The list was daunting. He needed to grow stronger while staying hidden. Build evidence while maintaining cover. Prepare for a fight while appearing to cooperate.

One step at a time, he told himself. Start with what you can control.

Michael's office looked different.

The same desk, the same chairs, the same inspirational posters about torture methodology. But the energy had shifted. Michael wasn't nervously performing cooperation anymore. He was sitting behind his desk with the stillness of someone who had made a decision and accepted its consequences.

"You wanted to see me," Dean said.

"I wanted to offer you something." Michael gestured to the chair across from him. "Please. Sit."

Dean sat.

"During the gauntlet," Michael said, "I watched you. You stood in the crowd with everyone else. You didn't use any abilities. You let your friends suffer while suppressing every instinct to help them." He paused. "That was the hardest thing you've ever done, wasn't it?"

"Yes."

"I lied to Shawn. To my boss. To the being who created the system I've served for millions of years." Michael's voice was quiet. "That was the hardest thing I've ever done. And I can't take it back. Can't pretend it didn't happen. Can't go back to being a loyal employee who happens to run an experimental neighborhood."

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying the deal we made is obsolete." Michael opened a drawer and pulled out a folder—thick, dog-eared, clearly well-used. "This is everything I know about afterlife architecture. The point system's calculation methods. The Judge's decision protocols. The structural weaknesses in Bad Place monitoring."

He slid the folder across the desk.

"I'm not giving you this because of our agreement. I'm giving it to you because I want the reform to succeed. Because I can't be what I was anymore, and the only way forward is to become something different."

Dean picked up the folder. The contents were dense—diagrams, equations, organizational charts that mapped eternities of bureaucratic evil.

"This is..." He stopped. "This is everything."

"Not everything. But enough to help." Michael's expression shifted. "In exchange, I want something too."

"What?"

"Philosophy lessons. Real ones. Not as a spy learning your methods—as a student learning to think differently." Michael's voice cracked slightly. "I've spent millions of years designing suffering. I'm good at it. I understand human weakness better than most demons in existence. But I don't understand why humans endure. Why they help each other despite the cost. Why forgiveness exists when revenge would be easier."

"You want to understand human ethics."

"I want to understand how to be good." The words seemed to cost Michael something. "Or at least, how to stop being actively evil. I'll take what I can get."

Dean looked at the demon across from him—the being who had designed this entire torture neighborhood, who had lied to his superiors, who was now sitting with a vulnerability Dean had never expected to see.

His VR was back to full function now, and Michael's signature confirmed what his words suggested: genuine desire for change. Not performance. Not manipulation. The real thing.

[Subject: Michael — Bond status: Deepening]

[Category shift: Invested co-conspirator → Genuine student]

"We'll start with Aristotle," Dean said. "Virtue ethics. The idea that moral character develops through practice rather than rule-following."

"I've been reading him." Michael's cheeks flushed—an oddly human reaction for a demon. "On my own. I didn't understand all of it, but—"

"Show me."

Michael opened another drawer. Inside was a dog-eared copy of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, with three pages of notes in demonic script folded between the covers.

Dean stared at it.

"You've been studying ahead."

"I wanted to be prepared." Michael closed the drawer, but didn't lock it. "I wanted to show you I'm serious."

He's serious, Dean realized. The demon who designed eternal torture is sitting here with an Aristotle book and handwritten notes, asking to learn how to be good.

If that wasn't hope, nothing was.

"Tomorrow," Dean said. "Chidi's house. Your first formal lesson."

"I'll be there."

"Bring the notebook."

Michael almost smiled.

"I will."
