Chapter 8: WATER HAG TERRITORY AND THE FIRST RECIPE

The observation blind was Kasimir's design — woven reeds over a driftwood frame, positioned at the edge of a flooded clearing where the Water Hag had been sighted.

I crouched inside it, watching through a gap barely wide enough to see, and tried to ignore the mud seeping through my boots.

"Two hundred meters from the Nekker patriarch's territory," Kasimir whispered from beside me. "She doesn't cross his line. He doesn't cross hers."

The same boundary. The same invisible line that every creature in this swamp seemed to respect.

The Water Hag emerged from the deeper water thirty meters out — humanoid, hunched, its skin the grey-green of something that had rotted in brackish water. It moved with a predator's efficiency, scanning the clearing for prey.

[WILDS REGISTRY — TARGET ACQUIRED]

[SPECIES: WATER HAG (VELEN VARIANT)]

[CLASSIFICATION: NECROPHAGE | THREAT: HIGH]

[BEHAVIORAL NOTE: FEEDING STATE — OPTIMAL FOR OBSERVATION]

I activated Anatomy Read at maximum range and let the overlay build.

[ANATOMY READ — ACTIVE]

Organ estimate. Skeletal structure. Muscular density far higher than the external appearance suggested — this thing was stronger than it looked and faster in water than on land. The priority points glowed amber at the usual locations: base of skull, major arteries, the junction points where precise strikes would produce maximum effect.

The hag caught something in the shallows — a fish or a frog, I couldn't tell from this distance — and began to feed.

Then it did something I hadn't expected.

It stopped eating. It examined the prey, turned it over in its clawed hands, and carefully extracted a specific organ. The rest of the carcass it discarded. Just one organ, placed into what looked like a pouch woven from water weeds.

It moved to another kill. Same pattern. Extract, preserve, discard.

I added a note to the Registry entry: "Organ-selective harvesting. Unknown purpose. Not standard feeding behavior. Requires investigation."

The Water Hag was sorting. Selecting. Building toward something.

This wasn't in any Witcher bestiary I remembered from my past life. The games had Water Hags as straightforward territorial monsters — kill them, collect their mutagens, move on. This behavior was...

The blind shifted in the mud.

Silent to my ears. Not to the hag's.

Its head snapped toward my position, the feeding-state alertness dropping away and replaced with something focused and predatory. The CDM's threat assessment jumped.

[THREAT ELEVATION — WATER HAG AGGRESSIVE]

[DISTANCE: 30m | CLOSING]

I had options. None of them were good.

Beast Tamer's Voice wouldn't work at this range — the Rotfiend encounter had taught me that partial effects required proximity. Anatomy Read showed me the threat vector, the priority points, the optimal strike locations, but I couldn't reach any of them from inside a reed blind with thirty meters of swamp between us.

Retreat through swamp mud was not competitive.

The hag was moving toward us, its speed in the shallows terrifying.

[ABILITY AVAILABLE: VOID STEP — PHASE 1]

[EFFECT: DASH — 15m | BRIEF MAGICAL INVISIBILITY WINDOW]

[COOLDOWN: 30 SECONDS]

I activated it without thinking.

The world blurred. My body moved through space in a way that felt fundamentally wrong — not running, not jumping, but shifting — and I arrived fifteen meters back in shallow water, crouched in a reed bed I hadn't been anywhere near a moment ago.

[VOID STEP — ACTIVATION SUCCESSFUL]

[CURRENT POSITION: REED BED NORTHWEST]

[DETECTION STATUS: UNTRACKED — INVISIBILITY WINDOW HELD]

The hag had stopped. It was scanning the clearing where the blind had been, clearly confused by the disappearance of its prey. Its head turned, tracking, but its attention passed over my new position without pausing.

The invisibility window had worked. The hag hadn't seen where I'd gone.

It turned back toward the water, giving up the hunt with the pragmatic efficiency of a predator that knew when pursuit wasn't worth the energy. It returned to its feeding spot and resumed the organ-selective harvesting as if nothing had happened.

I stayed in the reed bed until my heartbeat returned to something approaching normal, then began the slow retreat toward safer ground.

Kasimir found me at the edge of the swamp margin, muddy and breathing hard.

"You moved," he said. Not a question.

"I had to."

"The blind was thirty meters from where I found you." His voice carried no judgment, only observation. "That's a long distance to cover through mud without leaving tracks."

"I'm faster than I look."

He studied my face for a long moment, then nodded in the way he did when he was filing information for later. "Most lords would have run faster and in the wrong direction."

I couldn't tell if that was a compliment.

The completed Water Hag entry triggered a notification as we walked back toward the manor.

[WILDS REGISTRY — ENTRY COMPLETE: WATER HAG (VELEN VARIANT)]

[TOTAL ENTRIES: 6/10]

[RECIPE UNLOCKED: CLEARWATER DRAUGHT]

[EFFECT: SWAMP NAVIGATION PASSIVE — 2-HOUR MIASMA RESISTANCE]

[INGREDIENTS: 3x BLACK MOSS (AVAILABLE), 1x WATER HAG BILE (UNAVAILABLE), 1x SWAMP WILLOW ROOT (AVAILABLE)]

Six entries. Four more for the CP milestone. And a recipe that would make swamp navigation safer — if I could harvest the bile from a creature that had nearly killed me for watching it too closely.

I added the recipe to Marta's working list and noted the organ-selective behavior in a separate file.

The Water Hag had stopped at exactly the same point the Nekker patriarch stopped. The same invisible line. The same boundary that everything in this swamp respected.

Three creatures now. Three separate species. All holding the same perimeter.

The thing they were not crossing toward was forty meters below the swamp floor, broadcasting on frequencies I could barely register.

And every day I spent documenting the creatures that avoided it, the pattern became harder to ignore.
