Chapter 34
"Black Cloaks"
The Sato House — Morning. Three Months into Special Attack Training.
Three months. The timeline has changed what the training ground looks like — the target boulders are different now, the old ones reduced to rubble over the course of work that has a direction. Six months compressed into three months of effort that started before sunrise every day and ended when the light was too low to continue properly.
The tournament is three months away. Close enough to feel like a thing rather than a plan.
The Sato house at morning. Honji left before the boys woke — the hunting route calls early and he has been returning by midday. Sakura is at the stove, the fire going, the smell of the morning meal beginning.
Ayato is at the table with his book. This is such a constant state that the table has begun to look incomplete when the book is not on it.
Hiruma is beside him, doing nothing specific. He is watching Ayato read. This is something he does when he doesn't want to train yet and doesn't want to do anything else — he sits beside his brother and watches him read, and occasionally Ayato turns a page and occasionally Hiruma's eyes follow the movement.
HIRUMA
"What are you reading."
AYATO
(Not looking up.)
"The same thing I was reading when you asked fifteen minutes ago."
HIRUMA
"Remind me."
AYATO
"Tournament records. Historical junior division results from other regions. Age groupings, common element matchups, tendencies by style."
HIRUMA
(Leaning slightly to look at the page.)
"Any fire users we should worry about?"
AYATO
"I don't know the field for this tournament yet. This is research into patterns, not specific opponents."
HIRUMA
"You're studying patterns of people we haven't met yet for a tournament three months away."
AYATO
(Turning a page.)
"Yes."
Hiruma looks at him for a moment.
HIRUMA
"You're the best person I know."
AYATO
(Still reading.)
"Eat your breakfast."
SAKURA
(Setting bowls on the table.)
"Both of you — put the book away until after."
The book goes away. They eat. The morning light coming through the window, the village sounds outside, the particular warmth of a kitchen where someone has been cooking.
SAKURA
(At the stove.)
"How far are you with the special attacks? Three months in."
HIRUMA
(Eating.)
"I can fire both palms together now. For about four seconds before the control slips. Alice says the sustained version needs another month."
AYATO
"The tip compression is holding through the impact consistently. The boulder splits now — not like Sensei's Splitting Wind but the point impact is real. I'm working on the follow-through."
SAKURA
"And Himiko?"
HIRUMA
(With the particular pride of someone reporting a teammate's progress.)
"The water blade holds for about twelve seconds now. She can swing it. It's sharp — actually sharp, like a real weapon. Alice said another month and she'll be able to hold it through a full exchange."
Sakura turns and looks at her sons. The boys who started running to a training ground at eight years old in the dark every morning. Now ten, almost eleven. Swords at their hips even at the breakfast table.
( (Sakura) They're getting ready for something I can see ahead even if they can't yet. The tournament is the visible thing. But behind it— )
She turns back to the stove.
SAKURA
"Don't skip lunch today. I'm making it early."
HIRUMA
"Yes, Mama."
Outside the Village of Millin — Same Morning
Three miles from the village gate. A road that sees moderate traffic between settlements, currently empty at this hour. The trees on either side, the sky open above, the morning birds doing what morning birds do.
Two figures on the road. Black cloaks. Moving at the pace of people who have been walking for a long time and have found the rhythm that makes distance irrelevant.
The shorter figure stops. One hand out. The other figure stops beside them.
In the shorter figure's hand — a device. Small, disc-shaped, made of some material that the light reflects off at wrong angles. On its face, something that functions like a compass needle, but the thing it points at is not north.
HOODED FIGURE 2 — THE SHORTER, COMPOSED ONE
(Looking at the device.)
"Stronger. Significantly stronger than yesterday."
HOODED FIGURE 1 — THE TALLER, WILDER ONE
(Looking at the village gate visible in the distance.)
"That village."
FIGURE 2
"Millin. Small settlement. Northern edge of the Ardenmere region."
FIGURE 1
"How many people?"
FIGURE 2
"Three hundred, approximately. The signal has been building since we entered this region. It's been pointing here for two days."
The taller figure looks at the village gate. The body language of someone who has been patient for a long time and has reached the end of patience.
FIGURE 1
"Then we go in."
FIGURE 2
(Still looking at the device.)
"We go in. We don't need to destroy the whole village — we need to locate the source. Let me track it first before—"
FIGURE 1
(Already moving.)
"We've been tracking for six weeks. I'm done being careful."
The composed figure watches their partner move toward the gate. Something in their expression that is not quite disagreement — more like a calculation being updated in real time.
( (Figure 2) This won't be contained. When they get like this it's never contained. Track fast. Find the source before they set fire to the wrong thing. )
They follow.
The village gate of Millin stands open. Morning. Ordinary.
They walk through it.
Millin Village — The Attack Begins
What happens next is fast and specific and terrible in the way that things are terrible when someone decides to prioritise an objective over the people between them and it.
The composed figure works the device — moving through the village's eastern quarter, watching the needle, calculating. The signal is strong. It's here. Somewhere in this settlement, something with an element the device was built to find.
The taller figure does not wait for the calculation to complete.
FWOOOM—!!
Fire. Not a sphere, not a controlled projection — a broad sweep, the element thrown at a row of houses on the northern street with the careless force of someone who wants people moving, wants the cover of confusion, wants the village disrupted enough that whoever they're looking for becomes visible by how they react.
CRASH—!! WHOOSH—!! CRACK—!!
The houses catch. Wood is not kind to fire at this scale.
Villagers on the northern street scatter — the immediate animal response to fire and the particular quality of magic fire, which behaves differently from the kind people know how to fight. Screaming. Running. A market cart going over. Chickens in all directions from someone's yard.
A dog that was sleeping in the road is not sleeping anymore and is not in the road anymore.
Three goats. Gone.
The composed figure watches the panic with the specific detachment of someone reading information in how people move under pressure. Every reaction is data — where people run, what they grab, whether they reach for magic or reach for each other. The device in their hand moves more actively now, the needle swinging as people with elements react to the fire.
( (Figure 2) Most of this is common — fire, water, earth, wind. All expected. The ordinary distribution of a village this size. )
( But there's something under it. The signal isn't from the adults. It's— )
FWOOOM—!! BOOM—!! CRASH—!!
The shorter figure sends water next — a pressurised burst at a fence line, not to help any fire but to collapse the barrier and clear the space behind it. Goats. More goats. The goats are having an extraordinary morning.
FIGURE 1
(Loud — loud enough that the nearest fleeing villagers hear it.)
"COME OUT. What we're looking for — give it to us and we leave."
Nobody knows what this means. Nobody has anything to give. The villagers run faster.
FIGURE 2
(Low, to their partner.)
"Stop announcing. They don't know what we're tracking. The signal will tell us where—"
FWOOOM—!!
Another house. The northern end of the market lane, a building that sells dry goods and is extremely flammable.
The composed figure watches the device.
The needle swings. Strong. Very strong. From the south — the residential quarter.
( There. Two signals. Close together. And young — the signature is young. )
The Sato House — Same Time
Hiruma hears it first. He always hears the loud things first.
BOOM—!!
His head comes up from breakfast.
Then the screaming. Distant but real, the specific quality of mass panic that doesn't sound like any specific individual in trouble but like a whole section of a settlement simultaneously deciding to be elsewhere.
He is on his feet. Ayato is on his feet. The book is on the table.
SAKURA
(At the window, looking north.)
"That's—"
FWOOOM—!! CRASH—!!
The orange glow. Visible from the southern street even through intervening houses — fire, at a scale that a cooking accident doesn't produce.
HIRUMA
(Already at the sword rack.)
"Something's happening in the north quarter."
AYATO
(Taking his katana.)
"People are running this way. Something's pushing them south."
SAKURA
(Turning from the window — the voice of a mother whose children are already armed.)
"Stop. Both of you. You don't know what's out there—"
HIRUMA
(Heading for the door.)
"That's why we're going to look—"
SAKURA
"HIRUMA—"
The door. Both of them through it.
She stands at the door frame and watches them go up the road toward the smoke. Her hands are on the frame. Her wind magic is running at her skin — the circulation running hot the way it does when the body understands something before the mind has finished processing it.
( Honji. He's in the forest. )
( The training ground is east. Senri— )
She looks north. Then she runs north after her sons.
Millin Village — Northern Market Lane
Villagers streaming south past them, against the direction the twins are moving. Faces afraid, a few with small injuries from debris. Someone carrying a child. Someone with a goat on a lead that clearly doesn't want to be on a lead right now.
The twins push through the flow. Against the current.
FWOOOM—!! CRACK—!! CRASH—!!
The sounds get louder as they go north. The orange glow brighter. The smell of burning wood now physical, not just visible.
A hand on Hiruma's arm.
HIMIKO
(From a doorway, catching them as they pass.)
"I was on my way to training. What's happening?"
HIRUMA
(Not stopping.)
"Don't know yet. Someone's burning things. Come on."
She falls in beside them. Three students moving against the flow of a village getting out of the way of something.
They reach the corner of the northern market lane.
They see them.
Two figures in black cloaks. The taller one standing at the center of the lane with fire running at both hands — not contained, not shaped, the fire of someone who uses their element as weight rather than precision. Three houses on the north side of the lane burning. A fourth smouldering. The market cart that went over earlier still on its side, its contents scattered and partly alight.
The shorter one is moving — not attacking, moving through the space, one hand holding a small device, the other reading the air. Precise. Systematic. The composed motion of someone doing a job while their partner provides the chaos that makes the job possible.
Three students at the corner. The sight of it.
( (Ayato) Two magic users. High control — the fire placement is deliberate even when it looks random, it's pushing people in specific directions. Water seen earlier, fire now. Working together. One is— )
( (Himiko) This is the thing from the north. The hooded figures. They're here. )
HIMIKO
(Low, urgent, to Ayato.)
"What do we do?"
Ayato opens his mouth.
CRACK—!! STOMP STOMP STOMP—!!
Hiruma is already ten feet ahead of them, walking toward the figures with his dual blades drawn, the fire Integration running hot at both edges.
HIRUMA
(Full volume — the voice that doesn't do small.)
"HEY!! YOU TWO!!"
AYATO
(Under his breath.)
"Hiruma—"
The two figures stop. The taller one's fire flickers — not extinguished, just interrupted by attention. The shorter one's hand closes around the device.
Both of them look at Hiruma.
HIRUMA
(Standing in the lane with both swords levelled, absolutely furious, absolutely committed.)
"You're in our village. You're burning our village. WHO ARE YOU and WHAT DO YOU WANT."
A beat.
The shorter figure looks down at the device in their hand.
The needle. It has gone from a directional reading to a sustained point — fixed on the twin in the white kimono and the twin in the black kimono with an intensity that makes the reading from all the previous villages look like static by comparison. Two signals. Strong. The specific signature the device was built to find, concentrated in the two boys standing in the lane.
( (Figure 2) There they are. Two. Side by side. The signals are indistinguishable from each other at this range — both carriers, both strong, both young. )
( We found them. )
They tap their partner's arm. A single gesture — not a word, a direction. The taller one reads it. Looks at the twins. The fire at their hands shifts — from the broad destructive output to something more contained. More purposeful.
FIGURE 1
(The direct flat voice of someone delivering an instruction.)
"You two. Come with us. Quietly. Nothing else happens to your village."
Three students. The instruction landing.
HIRUMA
(After one second.)
"...No."
FIGURE 2
(Stepping forward.)
"You don't understand what you're—"
HIRUMA
(Grinning — the specific grin that means everything is about to become a problem.)
"Make us."
AYATO
(Behind him, katana out, the resigned expression of someone who knew this was coming.)
"Hiruma—"
CRACK—!! CLANG—!! CRACK—!!
Hiruma charges. Both blades forward, fire running hot at the edges, the full commitment of someone who has been training this for two and a half years and is genuinely angry.
The taller figure steps aside. Not dramatically — just enough. The blades find nothing. Their hand comes down on Hiruma's leading wrist — not hard, redirecting — and Hiruma's momentum carries him past.
He spins, corrects, comes back in. Faster this time. The combination he knows best, left blade then right, then a step that changes the angle.
CLANG—!! CLANG—!!
Both parried. The figure's hands bare — no weapon — and both blades are finding nothing that matters. The deflections are easy. Uncomfortably easy.
( (Hiruma) They're redirecting everything. Not blocking — redirecting, like Alice did in the assessment. But faster. Much faster. )
FWOOM—!! CRACK—!!
He fires a fire sphere — the honest projection, the trained technique — directly at the taller figure's chest.
A wave of their hand. The sphere deflects sideways on a wall of compressed water and hits the already-burning fence with no new effect.
Ayato is already in. He took the opening Hiruma's attack created — the taller figure was occupied — and drives toward the shorter one. Wind Integration on the katana, the tip compression attempted in real combat for the first time.
WHOOSH—!! CRACK—!!
The shorter figure steps back. A single step, precise, and the compressed tip catches nothing but the air where they were. Their hand comes up — a narrow water blade, not fired but held like a weapon — and the exchange is over in three seconds.
THMP—!!
Ayato is on the ground. Not thrown — placed, the difference between someone who wants to hurt you and someone who wants to stop you.
He gets up.
( (Ayato) They're not trying to injure us. The short one had a clear hit and didn't take it. They want us mobile. They want us to come with them. )
( That's worse than if they wanted to hurt us. )
FIGURE 2
(Watching Ayato rise — the analytical calm of someone still working.)
"Fire. Wind. Both competent for their age. Not what we're tracking."
FIGURE 1
(To their partner.)
"The device says it's them."
FIGURE 2
"The device says their signatures are here. What we're looking for isn't their primary elements. It's the secondary. The dormant."
A pause between the two figures. Something settled and decided.
FIGURE 2
"It doesn't matter. Take them."
FWOOOM—!! CRACK—!! THMP—!! THMP—!!
Fast. Very fast. The kind of fast that makes the twins' two and a half years feel like a drawing of speed rather than speed itself. The taller figure handles Hiruma — one movement that catches both blades and redirects them and deposits Hiruma on the ground six feet from where he started. The shorter figure handles Ayato — the same efficiency, the same no-harm quality, the same terrible ease.
Both boys on the ground. Both of them staring up at a sky that has two black-cloaked figures above it.
They get up.
Of course they get up.
...!!
HIRUMA
(Getting up, the grin gone now, something harder in its place.)
"That's all you've got? Redirecting everything? Come and FIGHT—"
He charges again. This time without elegance — raw, angry, the committed push of someone who knows they're outmatched and is refusing to accept what that means.
CRACK—!! CLANG—!! CRACK—!! THMP—!!
Down again. He rolls. Up again. The fire Integration at his blades brighter now — fuelled by anger burning hotter than the controlled version.
Ayato beside him, wind running the katana. Two students. Their best.
CLANG—!! WHOOSH—!! THMP—!! THMP—!!
Down again. Both of them.
The village burning behind the figures. The smoke. The distant sound of panicked animals and people. The ordinary morning that isn't anymore.
( (Ayato) We can't beat them. Our best attack barely makes them adjust their footing. We need— )
He looks sideways. Himiko.
She is at the corner of the lane. Her water Enhancement is running — she activated it when the fight started, the body doing what the training built. Her expression is frightened. She is ten years old and two very dangerous adults are handling the twins like a practice exercise and she is doing the calculation that she always does — what is the most useful thing that can happen right now.
Ayato meets her eyes.
( (Ayato) Go. She knows. )
He gives the smallest nod.
Himiko looks at him. At Hiruma already getting up and charging again, the furious tide of him. At the two figures who are completely in control of this situation and have not broken a sweat.
She turns and runs.
Not away from the village. East. Toward the training ground.
The training ground where Senri Kako and Alice Vermonta start every morning early.
The training ground where two of the strongest fighters this village will ever see are currently practicing their morning work and don't yet know that two of their students are on the ground in the northern lane being handled by opponents they cannot touch.
CRACK—!! THMP—!! CRACK—!! THMP—!!
The twins get up. They get knocked down. They get up again. The fire runs the blades and the wind runs the katana and it does almost nothing but they don't stop.
It is not bravery that keeps them getting up. It is something simpler and less articulate — the refusal, deep and constitutional, to be on the ground while something is happening to their village.
They are not winning. They are not going to win. But Himiko is running and they are buying the seconds she needs.
Every time they stand up is another second.
