Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Girl Who Wasn’t Missing

Maya didn't rush.

That was the first thing she decided when morning came.

Rushing meant panic. Panic meant mistakes. And mistakes at Crestview felt like something you didn't get to correct.

So she moved normally.

Got dressed. Packed her books, walked out of the hostel like every other student who had nothing to hide.

But her mind was already working.

I need to confirm it.

Not what she felt. Not what she feared.

What she saw.

The administration building was quieter than the rest of the school.

Students passed through it, but no one lingered. No one stood around talking or checking things unless they had to.

Maya noticed that immediately, which meant whatever is here… matters.

She walked past the front desk without stopping, her expression calm, her steps steady. No hesitation. No curiosity showing on her face.

Just another student.

The notice board sat along the far wall.

Clean. Organized.

Important.

Her eyes moved over it quickly, announcements, schedules, class changes, then student list, attendance.

Her steps slowed.

Then stopped.

Maya stepped closer.

Her heart didn't race.

It tightened.

Slowly.

Because she already knew what she was about to see.

Her eyes scanned the names.

Line by line.

Careful.

Focused.

Then she found it.

The name, the girl from last night.

The one who didn't move.

The one who didn't fight.

The one Kai dragged like she didn't matter.

Maya stared at it.

Once.

Twice.

Making sure.

Status: Present

Her fingers curled slightly at her side.

No hesitation.

No delay.

No correction.

Just present.

Maya exhaled slowly.

So I didn't imagine it.

Which meant only one thing.

They're hiding it.

"Looking for something?"

The voice came from behind her.

Maya didn't flinch.

Didn't turn immediately.

She let a second pass, just enough to look natural.

Then she turned.

A girl stood there, arms folded, expression unreadable.

Maya didn't recognize her.

"Just checking my class," Maya replied easily.

The girl's gaze lingered on her a second longer than necessary.

Then she nodded.

"Careful what you look for," she said.

Maya held her gaze.

"And if I'm not?"

The girl's lips curved slightly.

"Then you might find it."

She walked away.

Just like that.

Maya watched her go.

Then turned back to the board.

The name was still there.

Unchanged.

Untouched.

Like last night never happened.

Classes didn't help.

If anything, they made it worse.

Everything continued like normal.

Teachers taught.

Students answered.

Pens moved.

Chairs shifted.

But Maya noticed the gaps.

The empty seat in the back row.

No bag.

No books.

No one asking where the owner was.

She glanced at the student beside her.

"Who sits there?" she asked quietly.

The girl didn't look at her.

"Don't know."

The answer came too fast.

Too clean.

Maya leaned back slightly.

Lie.

By lunch, the feeling had settled in her chest.

Not fear.

Something sharper.

Awareness.

She wasn't just in a strange school.

She was in something controlled.

Something managed.

Something that erased things… easily.

The cafeteria buzzed with noise, but it didn't feel loud.

It felt contained.

Maya sat with her tray, her eyes scanning the room without making it obvious.

Groups.

Patterns.

Hierarchy.

And then silence.

Not full.

Not complete.

But enough.

She didn't need to look.

She already knew.

Still, she did.

Kai.

Ryan.

Ethan.

Walking in like they didn't need permission.

Like they didn't need acknowledgement.

Because they already had control.

Maya watched them for exactly one second.

Then looked away.

But not before Kai's eyes met hers.

Brief.

Sharp.

Intentional.

He didn't look surprised.

He didn't look curious.

He looked aware.

Like he'd been expecting it.

"You're staring."

Maya didn't look up.

"I'm observing."

Chloe sat across from her, her expression tight.

"That's worse," she muttered.

Maya took a sip of water.

"Who was she?" she asked.

Chloe froze.

Just for a second.

Then her expression hardened.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Maya tilted her head slightly.

"The girl from last night."

Silence.

Tessa shifted beside Chloe.

Nadia stopped scrolling.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then Chloe leaned forward.

Slow.

Careful.

"You need to stop," she said quietly.

Maya held her gaze.

"Stop what?"

"Asking questions you don't want answers to."

Maya's expression didn't change.

"But I do want answers."

Chloe's jaw tightened.

"That's the problem."

Maya stood up before the conversation could stretch further.

Before it could turn into something else.

Something heavier.

"I'm done eating," she said simply.

No one stopped her.

No one followed.

But she felt it.

Eyes.

Watching.

Measuring.

She didn't go back to class immediately.

Instead, she walked.

Not aimlessly.

Not randomly.

But with purpose she didn't fully understand yet.

Her steps led her toward the back of the academic building.

Quieter.

Less crowded.

Less… controlled.

Or so it seemed.

That's when she saw it.

A door.

Slightly open.

Not wide.

Not obvious.

Just enough to notice.

Maya slowed.

Her eyes flicked around.

No one.

No movement.

No sound.

She stepped closer.

Her fingers brushed the door lightly.

Pushed.

It opened.

Just a little more.

Inside

Dark.

Not completely.

But enough to hide things.

Maya stepped in.

One step.

Then another.

The air felt different.

Heavier.

Still.

Her eyes adjusted slowly.

Shapes formed.

Furniture.

Walls.

And then something on the floor.

Maya's breath caught.

A stain.

Dark.

Not fresh.

But not old enough to ignore.

Her chest tightened.

She crouched slightly.

Not touching.

Just looking.

Blood.

Her mind confirmed it before she wanted it to.

A sound behind her made her freeze.

Not loud.

Just close.

Maya stood slowly.

Turned.

And there he was.

Kai.

Leaning against the door like he'd always been there.

Like he'd been watching the whole time.

Her heart skipped once.

Hard.

But her face calm.

Controlled.

"You really don't know when to stop, do you?" he said quietly.

Maya straightened fully.

"I could ask you the same thing."

Something flickered in his eyes.

Interest.

This time, real.

He pushed off the door.

Stepped closer.

Not rushed.

Not hesitant.

Just… deliberate.

Maya didn't step back.

Not this time.

"You saw something last night," he said.

Not a question.

"I see a lot of things," Maya replied.

His gaze sharpened.

"Then you should learn which ones to forget."

Maya tilted her head slightly.

"And if I don't?"

He stopped in front of her now.

Close.

Too close.

The silence stretched.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Then he smiled.

Slow, faint.

But this time it didn't feel like a warning, It felt like a decision.

"Then things get… complicated," he said softly.

Maya held his gaze.

Unmoving.

Unafraid.

Or at least not showing it.

"Maybe I like complicated things."

That did it.

Something shifted completely in his expression.

Not amusement.

Not control.

Something deeper.

Darker.

"Careful," he murmured.

His voice dropped.

Lower.

Closer.

"Crestview doesn't break people slowly."

A pause.

"It ends them."

Maya's pulse spiked.

But she didn't look away.

Didn't move.

Didn't give him the reaction he expected.

And that,

That was her second mistake.

Or maybe her most dangerous move yet.

Because this time.

Kai didn't step back.

He stepped closer.
