Chapter 13 - chapter 13: The Man From Her Past

Serena was beginning to learn Adrian's routine.

Wake early.

Work out.

Read reports.

Minimal conversation.

Maximum discipline.

Everything about him was controlled.

Predictable.

Safe.

Which is why she wasn't prepared for chaos to enter that morning.

Margaret approached her carefully while she was having breakfast alone.

"Mrs. Kingston… there is someone here asking to see you."

Serena frowned slightly.

"Me?"

"Yes."

"Did he say his name?"

Margaret hesitated slightly.

"He said… Jason Cole."

The name hit like cold water.

Her fingers froze around her coffee cup.

Jason.

Her past.

Her mistake.

Her lesson.

"Tell him I'm not available."

Margaret nodded.

But before she could leave—

Jason's voice echoed from the entrance hall.

"Serena, we need to talk."

He had already walked in.

Uninvited.

Unwelcome.

Serena slowly stood.

Jason looked exactly the same.

Handsome.

Well dressed.

Confident.

The same man who chose wealth over her.

But this time his confidence had cracks.

His eyes moved around the mansion.

Calculating.

"So it's true."

Serena's voice was calm.

"You shouldn't be here."

Jason ignored that.

"You married him?"

"Yes."

"That was fast."

"Life moves."

Jason stepped closer.

"You could have told me you were aiming this high."

Serena's eyes hardened slightly.

"I wasn't."

"Come on Serena… you always had ambition."

"Not like yours."

That landed.

Jason sighed.

"Look… I made a mistake."

Serena almost laughed.

"You made a choice."

"It was pressure."

"It was money."

He didn't deny it.

"I can fix this."

Serena stared at him.

"Fix what?"

"Us."

Silence.

Then Serena answered clearly:

"There is no us."

Jason lowered his voice.

"You're really going to pretend this is real?"

"It is real."

"You think he loves you?"

That question didn't hurt like he expected.

Instead Serena answered calmly:

"Love wasn't part of the agreement."

Jason blinked.

"Agreement?"

He stepped closer.

"So it's a contract?"

Serena didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Jason smiled slightly.

"Then it's simple. Contracts end."

Serena's voice became cold.

"So do second chances."

Jason reached for her wrist.

"Serena, listen—"

A voice cut through the room like ice.

"Remove your hand."

Both turned.

Adrian stood there.

Still.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

Jason slowly released her.

"You must be the husband."

Adrian walked closer.

Every step calculated.

"And you must be the mistake."

Silence exploded in the room.

Jason forced a smile.

"We have history."

Adrian answered:

"You have five seconds."

"Or?"

Adrian's voice didn't rise.

"Or you discover how seriously I take trespassing."

Jason tried another tactic.

"You know she's only here for money, right?"

Wrong move.

Serena saw it immediately.

Adrian didn't react loudly.

Which was worse.

"Security," Adrian said calmly.

Two guards appeared instantly.

Jason's confidence cracked.

"You can't block her past."

Adrian answered:

"I can control her present."

That sentence hit Serena unexpectedly.

Jason tried one last shot:

"Serena… when this fake marriage ends… you'll come back."

Serena answered without hesitation:

"No."

"Why not?"

Her answer was quiet but powerful:

"Because I learned my worth the day you priced me."

That ended it.

Adrian nodded slightly to security.

Jason was escorted out.

Defeated.

Irrelevant.

Gone.

Silence returned.

Adrian turned to Serena.

"Are you alright?"

"Yes."

"Did he hurt you before?"

"No."

A pause.

Then:

"Just my expectations."

That answer stayed with him.

"He won't bother you again."

Serena looked at him carefully.

"You sound certain."

His answer was simple:

"I am."

She didn't ask how.

Some things were better unknown.

Then she said quietly:

"Thank you."

"It's my responsibility."

She studied him.

"You always say that."

"Because it's true."

She shook her head slightly.

"No."

That caught his attention.

"No?"

"You don't just act from responsibility."

He didn't respond.

Because he wasn't sure anymore.

As Serena walked away, Adrian realized something uncomfortable.

Seeing another man touch her had triggered something immediate.

Sharp.

Unpleasant.

Unfamiliar.

Later in his office, he finally said the word quietly to himself:

"Jealousy."

He didn't like it.

He didn't understand it.

But it was there.

And across the mansion…

Serena was realizing something equally dangerous.

For the first time since her past relationship…

She felt safe.

Not because Adrian loved her.

Not because he promised forever.

But because when it mattered…

He stood beside her.

And that was how dangerous feelings begin.

Not with passion.

But with protection.
