Chapter 129 - Chapter 128: I Choose You!

"I'm home."

Sugita Noboru was a third-grade elementary school student. As soon as he got home, he excitedly kicked off his shoes and ran over to turn on the TV.

His mother walked out of the kitchen, looking angry. Seeing him like this, she couldn't help but frown, "You don't even wash your hands, all you know is how to watch TV?"

Seeing the child unmoved and indifferent, his mother, wearing an apron with her hands on her hips, couldn't help but get a bit angry. "Noboru! Go wash your hands, right now!"

"Okay!"

Sugita Noboru hurriedly scrambled up and obediently trotted off to wash his hands.

When Mom gets angry, it's really scary.

After washing his hands, Sugita Noboru went back to sit in front of the TV.

His mother watched her child and unconsciously shook her head.

But playing is a child's nature after all. Since Sugita Noboru is still young, as long as there are no issues with his character, it doesn't seem to matter much.

At 5:30, after finishing the anime Tekkaman broadcast on TV Tokyo, Sugita Noboru was extremely excited, running around the house with his little fists raised!

"Transform! Tekkaman! D-Boy! Tekkaman Blade!"

This young lad was at that age where he had endless energy, jumping around like a monkey.

To put it less flatteringly, Sugita Noboru was at that age where even a dog would find him annoying.

Just hearing the pitter-patter of his footsteps as he ran through the living room gave his mother a headache.

Before she knew it, the boy charged out of the living room.

His mother glanced at him and saw that Sugita Noboru was wearing armor he had made out of cardboard.

His hands were also covered in cardboard.

"Take that!"

Sugita Noboru raised his hand and dealt his mother a hand chop.

It landed on her back, neither painful nor itchy.

His mother frowned, "Noboru! Stop messing around, Mom is busy with something."

It hit Mom on the back, but she didn't feel a thing. Mom frowned, "Noboru! Stop messing around, Mom has things to do." Seeing Mom didn't have much of a reaction, Sugita Noboru got even more excited. "Die, monster!" Sugita Noboru flew into a kick, landing it right on Mom's waist. "Ouch... ow, ow, ow..." Mom clutched her waist and half-crouched on the floor. "Ah, oh no, the monster is evolving!" Seeing Mom's state, Sugita Noboru quickly turned around and tiptoed away, preparing to flee the scene. "Danger, danger!" Mom stood up, hands on her hips, and shouted angrily, "What kind of crazy thing are you doing now?!" Sugita Noboru quickly broke into a trot. Mom went berserk, rushing up the stairs and catching the Tekkaman Sugita Noboru just before the bedroom door slammed shut. Immediately after, a painful wail came from inside the room. "Stop hitting me, Mom, I won't do it again, I know I was wrong, I'm sorry, Mom..." "You said the same thing last time!" After getting a beating, Sugita Noboru came out of the room, wiping away his tears. Mom is too mean. She's practically a big boss! At dinner, Sugita Noboru ate with extraordinary effort.

After being thrashed, Sugita Noboru wiped away his tears and came out of his room.

Mom is too mean.

She's practically a final boss!

During dinner, Sugita Noboru ate with unusual vigor.

I must eat more; Tekkaman cannot be defeated!

Once I grow up and become stronger, I will definitely defeat you!

Just you wait, final boss!

After finishing dinner, Sugita Noboru continued to sit in front of the TV.

It was said that a new anime would be broadcast on TV Tokyo tonight.

The name of this anime is "Pokémon."

Sugita Noboru had already noticed it when the trailer aired earlier and had become interested in it.

Since he served as the school's animal caretaker and usually took care of the goldfish and hamsters in his class, he had a lot of affection for these creatures.

On top of that, the anime's trailer said that "Pokémon" was a magical, fairytale world of Pokémon where humans and Pokémon lived in harmony and helped each other, which made him even more curious and excited.

The time reached 7:00 PM.

"Pokémon: Original Series" officially began airing.

First, several Poké Balls appeared on the television screen.

Then, the large characters [Pokémon] appeared in the center.

A child's voice shouted:

[Pokémon, I've got them!]

The OP began.

[A difficult journey]

[In the mountains, in the clouds, in the sea, in the forest]

[In the fire, in the water, in the earth, in the lightning]

[Pokémon are everywhere]

[With my own steps, quickly chasing after them]

[I will become the number one trainer in the universe]

With a different production team, the music was bound to be different from the Pokémon of the previous life, but Aoki Haruhi quite liked this new OP. It was electronic rock, and particularly energetic.

The OP continued to be sung by Mitsuishi Kotono, the voice actor for Ash in the Pokémon anime.

It was very common in Japan for voice actors to sing theme songs, and relatively speaking, it was cheaper, saving a portion of the production budget.

Otherwise, if they wanted to find a famous singer or voice actor to sing it, they would have to pay an additional fee.

In short, Kyoto Animation was a terrible miser that saved money wherever they could, squeezing every last penny.

However, looking at the final production result, it didn't seem to be a problem at all.

The melody and rhythm of the OP are fast-paced and incredibly energetic; combined with the entrance of the Pokémon, it inexplicably gets your blood racing.

Just from hearing the OP, Sugita Noboru couldn't help but get so excited that he started dancing around.

In the kitchen, his mother was washing the dishes, shaking her head.

She wondered if this child might have ADHD.

Ding-dong.

After the opening credits ended.

A small frame appeared on the television screen.

Inside this frame, two Pokémon were battling.

Here, Kyoto Animation used actual footage from the game as an opening, making it easy to tie in with the game's future release.

Thus, the background music was also the battle music from the game.

In the battle arena, the surrounding audience was cheering thunderously, and the scene was incredibly intense.

A purplish-red Pokémon with large ears and a long horn was engaged in a fierce battle with a black, ball-like Pokémon that had a tail and spikes on its back.

The purplish-red Pokémon was named Nidorino.

Its body had deep purple patches.

The horn on its forehead and its ears had grown larger, there was a row of jagged poisonous spines on its back, and its small, sharp fangs were exposed.

It had a very irritable personality; whenever it was in an excited state, it would strike at its opponent with its claws.

It would perk up its well-developed ears to scout its surroundings, and once it discovered something, it would immediately pounce, raising the spines on its back to fight with full force.

Nidorino let out a roar, then lowered its head and charged, slamming fiercely toward Gengar.

At the same time, the announcer's voice rang out from the television: "Wow! Nidorino used Horn Attack!"

However, the next second.

Gengar nimbly leaped up from the ground, dodging Nidorino's attack, lightly stepped on its back, and vaulted behind it.

"But Gengar dodged it beautifully!"

Before Nidorino could even turn around, Gengar stood in place, its wide mouth spreading into a large, eerie grin. Immediately after, ripples of sound waves radiated from its hands.

"It's using it! It's using it! Gengar used Hypnosis!"

The hypnotic waves struck Nidorino. The massive monster's eyes gradually closed, and then it tilted to one side and crashed heavily to the ground.

On the screen, the black silhouette of a trainer appeared, raising a Poké Ball. The Nidorino on the ground shrank inward, turning into a ball of light.

Then, it retracted back into the Poké Ball.

"It's asleep. Nidorino is out of commission."

"The trainer has recalled Nidorino."

"What kind of skills will he bring out next?"

The trainer stood with his feet apart, pulled another Poké Ball from his pocket, and tossed it onto the field.

A new Pokémon appeared, transforming into a giant long snake made of stone.

"Wow, it's Onix!"

Sugita Noboru watched, thoroughly enthralled, gesturing excitedly.

The battle between the Pokémon had held his attention firmly from the very beginning.

He didn't blink, hoping to see who would win.

On screen, the two sides continued their battle.

The camera gradually zoomed out.

It turned out that all of this was happening on a live broadcast on a television set.

A child around the same age as Sugita Noboru was sitting on a bed, looking exceptionally excited as he watched all of this.

This little boy had a childish face, but his eyes were incredibly determined.

He was wearing a red and white baseball cap on his head.

"This boy's name is Ash."

"He is 10 years old."

Huh?

He's actually the same age as me.

Sugita Noboru thought to himself.

"In the place where Ash lives, Pallet Town..." The voiceover ended there.

It then switched to Ash's own voice:

"That's right, once we turn ten, we can get our Pokémon trainer qualifications."

He would receive a starter Pokémon for novice trainers from Professor Oak.

He would embark on a journey of training with the goal of becoming a Pokémon Master.

"That's right, I'm going to make a declaration to all the Pokémon in the world!"

Ash clenched his fists and shouted aloud:

"The greatest Pokémon trainer, no, Pokémon Master!"

"That person, will be me!"

"Oh yeah, yeah, yeah!"

Sugita Noboru followed along, crawling around the room, his body wriggling like a maggot.

His mother, watching this unfortunate child, frowned in distress.

At night, Ash was very excited to sleep because the next morning, he would be able to receive a Pokémon from Professor Oak.

There were three starter Pokémon in total: Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle.

Due to his over-excitement, Ash had many dreams that night.

He dreamed that Charmander was not bad, Bulbasaur was also very strong, and Squirtle was also very powerful...

In short, he developed a case of decision paralysis.

Finally, Ash made his decision.

"Squirtle, you're the one!"

Waking up to find he had overslept, Ash hurried off, running.

On the way, he met his rival, Gary, and upon learning that Gary had already obtained a Pokémon, Ash felt both envious and jealous.

However, when he reached Professor Oak's lab, he discovered that because he was late, all the preceding Pokémon had already been chosen.

In front of the television, Sugita Noboru couldn't help but shed bitter tears.

"Waaaah, that's why you have to do things early! If you dawdle like this, how could there possibly be any Pokémon left waiting for you?"

Professor Oak rubbed his chin and said something philosophical, "Catching a ride is just like choosing a Pokémon; being one second late can change your whole life."

"Then what should I do?..." Ash was clearly starting to panic. "Are you saying I have to go on my journey empty-handed?"

"Well, there is one left... but..."

Professor Oak said, hesitating.

In front of the TV, Noboru Sugita's eyes lit up, and he immediately got excited. "Give it to him! Give it to him!"

He crawled toward the TV like a reptile, trying to see clearly what this last Pokémon would be.

Who knew that his mother's stern voice would come from the side, "Noboru! You're sitting too close! If you get that close to the TV, you'll go blind!"

"Okay, okay..."

Noboru Sugita immediately rolled back to his original spot.

But, filled with curiosity, he still kept his eyes glued to the TV screen, not blinking once.

"This Pokémon that was left over has a few issues," Professor Oak said, taking the last Poké Ball from a hidden compartment.

"Anyway, I'm late because I have issues, so it fits," Ash said, quite open-minded about it. As long as he got a Pokémon, he didn't care what it was.

Two "problematic" ones becoming partners—it was a perfect match.

"Then it's yours."

After Professor Oak finished speaking, he placed the Poké Ball in Ash's hand.

The Poké Ball opened, and a flash of light appeared.

On the table where the Poké Balls had been placed, there appeared a yellow, chubby, adorable Pokémon that looked like a cross between a small squirrel and a rabbit.

It had its eyes closed, with round, red, apple-like spots on its chubby cheeks.

When it opened its eyes, it looked incredibly cute.

It opened its little mouth and let out an adorable "Pikachu~"

"Wow~ Kawaii!"

Sugita Noboru let out an exclamation of admiration in front of the TV.

If nothing went wrong, this should be the protagonist Ash's pet Pokémon.

I really want one of these cute Pokémon too!

"Noboru! Didn't I tell you to stay away from the TV?" his mother's voice came from behind.

It turned out that, without realizing it, the little boy had scooted forward again.

Sugita Noboru quickly shuffled back two steps.

Mom is so annoying, interrupting me while I'm watching my show!

Professor Oak introduced it, saying the name of this Pokémon is Pikachu.

Pikachu is an electric mouse Pokémon with yellow fur all over its body, two brown stripes on its back, and a jagged, lightning-bolt-shaped tail with a patch of brown fur where it connects to its body.

It has a small mouth, black eyes, red electric sacs on its cheeks, and long ears with black tips.

"So cute! This one is clearly great!"

Ash said, reaching out his hand toward Pikachu.

Supporting its chubby body, he lifted it up.

"Oh, really?" Professor Oak, standing nearby, let out a skeptical sound.

"Of course it is. Hello, Pikachu."

As he spoke, Ash hugged Pikachu to his chest and rubbed his cheek against its forehead.

But just then, Pikachu let out a "Pika!"

A spark of electricity immediately flared from the electric sacs on its cheeks.

Zzzzt~~~

A current of electricity surged from Pikachu's body, shocking Ash until he was charred to a crisp.

Hahahaha...

Seeing this, Noboru Sugita clutched his stomach, rolling on the floor with laughter.

"Noboru! Can you keep it down?!"
