The building still carried the name.
CGI, cut deep into the stone above the entrance, letters black with decades of weather and soot. Nobody had bothered to change it yet. Or nobody had decided who still held the authority to try.
Inside, everything looked well on the surface.
Staff moved with the same clipped efficiency they always had. Files passed from hand to hand. Lifts rose and fell on schedule, carrying people who answered to titles.
But most of the administrative offices stood empty now—doors shut on rooms that had held voices a few days ago, desks cleared, chairs pushed in as if the occupants might return at any moment and never would.
The office of the Director of Field Operations had its doors closed.
"I think we might be going too far," Melissa said, leaning back in her chair behind the desk.
