Amara stepped out, wrapping her arms around herself as the cool night air brushed against her skin. She inhaled deeply, hoping the tension in her chest would ease.
The balcony was quiet, far away from the laughter and clinking glasses inside.
She leaned against the balcony rail, staring at the city lights.
Her mind replayed the conversation with Daniel again and again. The way he looked at her. The way he almost said something… but didn't.
"You always come outside when you're overwhelmed."
She closed her eyes.
Of course he followed her.
"I needed fresh air," she said.
He stood beside her, not too close, not too far.
"You looked uncomfortable in there."
"I was fine."
"You weren't."
"I hate seeing you like this."
"Like what?"
"Distant."
She let out a soft laugh. "I'm protecting myself."
"From me?"
"Yes."
The honesty shocked both of them.
She glanced at him. "You don't get to read me anymore."
"I never stopped," he replied quietly.
Her heart skipped.
She looked away quickly. "You should go back inside. Sophia might be looking for you."
"I told her I needed a minute."
Amara laughed softly. "You always need a minute with me."
The words came out more emotional than she intended.
Daniel turned toward her fully. "Because you matter to me."
She swallowed hard. "You're engaged."
"I know."
"Then act like it."
He looked frustrated. "You think this is easy for me?"
"Yes," she said honestly. "You chose this."
Daniel turned fully toward her. "Ama… if I had told you how I felt earlier… would things be different?"
The question hit her like a sudden wave.
She didn't answer immediately.
She remembered the late-night calls.
The almost confessions.
The hugs that lasted too long.
Her voice dropped to a whisper. "Yes", I would have.
"But if I had?"
She swallowed. "You never did".
The words hung between them.
Daniel's breath caught.
He stepped closer. "I was scared."
"You never looked scared to me".
"I was scared of ruining what we had."
She let out a sad smile. "You ruined it anyway , so what's the point".
The silence that followed was painful.
Daniel stepped closer, his voice low. "You're still the one person I feel calm with."
Her heart pounded.
He slowly reached for her hand.
She didn't pull away.
For a moment, everything felt suspended in time.
The noise from inside faded.
The city lights blurred.
It was just them.
Just like before.
But reality returned quickly.
She gently pulled her hand back.
"This isn't fair," she said softly.
"To who?"
"To your fiancée"
"To everyone."
His eyes searched hers. "Do you still have feelings for me?"
She hesitated.
That hesitation was answer enough.
Daniel moved even closer, his voice barely above a whisper. "Ama…"
Footsteps echoed behind them.
The moment shattered instantly.
They both stepped apart as two guests walked onto the balcony, chatting loudly.
Amara straightened. "We should go back inside."
Daniel nodded, but his expression was heavy with unspoken words.
They walked back in separately.
And for the rest of the night, neither of them spoke again.
But the distance between them felt smaller
And more dangerous.
