Chapter 56 - Daito Saga: Fair Play

Chapter 56: Contingency

The ruins of the Iron Bastion fell into an unnatural silence.

Not the silence of peace nor the silence that followed victory.

This was the silence that came before something ancient awakened.

A cold wind drifted through the shattered fortress, weaving between collapsed pillars and broken walls before spiraling around the warriors gathered within the battlefield. Dust rose from the cracked earth, dancing in slow circles as though the ruins themselves had begun holding their breath.

No one moved and no one dared.

Every pair of eyes followed Aerin.

She walked toward the center of the battlefield with measured steps, her long hair swaying gently behind her as if guided by an unseen current. There was no fear in her expression anymore. The uncertainty that had clouded her eyes moments ago had disappeared completely.

What remained...was faith.

Behind her, Daito slowly reached out his hand.

"...The Traditional Blade."

Without a word, Aerin unsheathed the ceremonial weapon and placed it into his palm.

The blade was neither ornate nor intimidating. It bore no jewels, no legendary glow, no extravagant craftsmanship. It looked ordinary.

Almost disappointingly so.

Yet everyone present knew appearances meant nothing. Some weapons carried history. This one carried generations.

Daito lowered his gaze and quietly examined the blade.

His reflection stared back at him through the polished steel.

Bruised, bloodied, exhausted, but determined.

"...Contingency."

His voice was calm, almost emotionless.

Before anyone could ask what he meant—

SHHK!

The blade flashed.

A thin crimson line opened across the center of his palm.

Blood spilled immediately, dripping onto the cold stone below.

Drip.

...Drip.

...Drip.

Aerin's eyes widened ever so slightly.

Monday frowned.

"Daito..."

Wei-Wan instinctively took a step forward before stopping himself.

The metallic scent of fresh blood spread through the air.

Daito simply closed his fingers, allowing the blood to soak into his hand before extending the weapon back toward Aerin.

"Don't interrupt me."

She accepted the blade carefully.

The instant her fingers wrapped around the hilt something changed.

Her eyes sharpened, not with aggression but with recognition. As though someone else's memories had quietly settled behind her own.

An ancient stillness washed over her. She inhaled slowly. Then stepped into the center of the battlefield. The ground beneath her feet felt different.

Older.

Waiting.

She lowered the tip of the Traditional Blade until it lightly kissed the stone.

Tink...

The tiny metallic sound echoed much farther than it should have.

Farther than physics allowed and farther than sound itself.

Shinsei narrowed her eyes.

"...What is this?"

She tilted her head ever so slightly.

"...Some kind of witchcraft?"

Cassian remained silent.

For the first time since the battle had begun...He wasn't smiling, he was watching.

Closely.

Every movement, breath and heartbeat.

Aerin closed her eyes.

The world around her disappeared.

The wind, the battlefield, even the pain.

Everything faded.

Only the voice of the old Shaman remained.

Soft and patient.

Echoing from memories buried deep within her childhood.

"The chosen is not born from strength..."

Her breathing slowed.

"The chosen is accepted by consequence."

She exhaled.

Then...She moved.

One step, then another.

Graceful and weightless.

Every motion flowed seamlessly into the next, resembling less of a martial art and more of an ancient dance forgotten by history itself.

Her bare feet glided across the broken stone without making a sound. As she turned, the tip of the blade gently traced the earth.

Scrrrrrrr...

At first, it seemed random and meaningless.

Simple lines etched into cracked rock. Then another line connected. Another circle appeared. Another symbol emerged.

Each stroke joined the previous one with impossible precision until intricate patterns spread beneath her feet.

Concentric circles and ancient characters.

Flowing geometric lines unlike any written language known today.

The battlefield itself had become a canvas.

And Aerin...it's artist.

A faint blue light flickered beneath the carvings.

Then another.

Then dozens more.

Hummmmmm...

The symbols awakened one after another, glowing softly beneath the dust-covered stone.

Monday felt the hairs on his arms rise.

"...I've never seen anything like this..."

Wasabi instinctively reached for one of her scanners before remembering it had shattered earlier in the battle.

"...Those symbols..."

Her voice trembled.

"...They're producing energy without any known source."

Even Wei-Wan remained speechless.

Only Cassian continued watching.

Completely still.

Aerin increased her pace.

The graceful movements became faster.

Her body spun elegantly around the ceremonial blade, every rotation leaving behind faint trails of glowing blue light.

The air itself began to hum.

Vmmmmmmmm...

Invisible pressure spread outward, as loose stones started vibrating. Tiny pebbles bounced against the ground. Dust spiraled upward around her feet.

Then she stopped.

Perfectly.

Standing directly before the blade.

Her aura erupted.

FWOOOOOOOM!!

It wasn't violent nor explosive.

It simply... appeared.

Like moonlight pouring through an open window.

Silver currents wrapped themselves around her body while the glowing circle beneath her feet expanded across the battlefield.

A second circle slowly formed above her outstretched hands.

It was perfect and weightless.

Rotating silently in midair.

Every engraved symbol upon it shone with a different color.

Blue.

Gold.

Crimson.

White.

The atmosphere grew heavier.

Cassian's smile slowly returned.

"...Interesting."

Aerin opened her eyes. There was no hesitation within them. Only purpose.

With one swift motion—

FWOOSH!

She thrust both palms forward.

"Ha!"

CRAAAAASH!!

The floating circle slammed directly into the Traditional Blade.

A shockwave exploded outward.

BOOOOOOM!!

Wind erupted across the battlefield, forcing everyone to shield their faces.

The blade vibrated violently.

VRRRRRRRR!!

Its steel changed.

Silver...

Became blue.

A strange azure glow pulsed across its edge.

Without stopping Aerin drew another circle.

This one formed twice as quickly. Its symbols burned brighter than before.

She slammed it downward.

KRAAAAAK!!

The blade flashed crimson.

A pulse of scarlet energy raced through its length.

Again, another circle larger, brighter and heavier.

Her breathing never faltered. Her movements became faster, fluid and effortless.

The third impact struck.

THOOOOOM!!

Gold.

The blade erupted with brilliant golden light as the surrounding ruins trembled violently.

Cracks raced across the ancient stone beneath everyone's feet.

CRRRRKKK...

Monday instinctively backed away.

"...This pressure..."

Zachia gritted his teeth.

"It's increasing..."

But Aerin never slowed down, she continued drawing circles faster and faster.

One, then another, then another.

Each one appeared before the previous impact had even finished echoing.

BOOM!!

KRAAASH!!

THOOM!!

WHOOOOOM!!

Her body blurred.

The eye could no longer follow her movements.

Afterimages began appearing around the ceremonial blade.

One Aerin...

Became two.

Two...

Became three.

Three...

Became countless shimmering silhouettes dancing around the battlefield in perfect synchronization.

Each image traced another glowing circle. Each circle crashed into the blade. Each impact deepened its power. The battlefield became a storm of radiant symbols.

Monday stared in disbelief.

"...She's multiplying..."

"No."

Shinsei quietly corrected him.

"...She's exceeding her own limits."

The circles no longer appeared one after another.

They existed simultaneously.

Blue.

Red.

Gold.

Silver.

White.

Every color collided around the Traditional Blade until it resembled the heart of a newborn star.

The air screamed.

SKRRRRRRRRRRR!!

The very air itself rippled under the unbearable pressure.

Then..Everything stopped.

The afterimages vanished.

The glowing circles dissolved into countless fragments of light that floated gently through the air like glowing snow.

Silence returned.

Aerin stood perfectly still.

Breathing heavily.

Sweat rolled down her face.

Blood trickled from the corner of her lips.

But she never loosened her grip on the blade.

Slowly...

She turned.

"Daito."

THOOOOM!!

An invisible wave exploded from his body. The earth cracked beneath his feet. Stone fragments floated into the air. His blood glowed faintly beneath his skin.

The veins running across his arms shimmered like streams of liquid light.

His muscles tightened, not growing larger, but growing sharper.

Every unnecessary movement disappeared and every imperfection vanished.

His body wasn't becoming stronger.

It was becoming...Efficient.

His heartbeat slowed.

Thump...

The world slowed with it.

Thump...

Dust particles drifted lazily through the air. He could see each individual grain.

Thump...

He heard Aerin's breathing from several meters away.

Monday's electricity crackled in rhythmic pulses.

The distant shifting of broken stone echoed through the ruined fortress.

Even Cassian's heartbeat...He could hear that too.

Ba–dump....

Ba–dump...

Steady, calm, and confident.

Daito slowly lifted his head.

His pupils contracted.

The battlefield unfolded before him with impossible clarity.

Every movement, breath, and twitch of muscle.

Every microscopic shift in balance, nothing escaped his perception.

He wasn't moving faster.

His mind...Simply began processing the world at a speed no ordinary human could comprehend.

For the first time since the battle began...Daito Greyhell could truly see.

And when his gaze finally met Cassian's, the smile on the latter's face widened ever so slightly.

Because he realized it immediately.

Something had changed, something significant and something dangerous.

The next move...Would decide everything.

to be continued...
