Chapter 71 - Daito Saga: Fair Play

Chapter 71: The Rebuild

And so...the rebuilding began.

At first, it was awkward.

Former prisoners worked beside the very citizens who had once feared them. Guards found themselves passing bricks to the men and women they had spent years watching from behind iron bars. Suspicion lingered in every glance, and silence often spoke louder than words.

No one truly trusted anyone yet. But cities were not rebuilt with trust alone. They were rebuilt with hands.

Days slipped by beneath the relentless sun.

The crater that had once looked like the end of the world slowly began to change.

Broken stone was cleared away.

Collapsed buildings were dismantled piece by piece.

New foundations were laid where ruins had once stood, and the endless sounds of destruction were replaced by the rhythm of construction.

Clank!

Steel beams were raised.

Thunk!

Hammers drove nails into fresh timber.

Scrrrape...

Shovels carved pathways through earth and rubble as hundreds of people worked together from sunrise until long after sunset.

The work was exhausting.

But little by little...progress became impossible to ignore.

Weeks passed.

The walls of new homes began to rise.

Roads that had been buried beneath shattered rock were uncovered and repaired. Fresh stone replaced cracked pavement, and gardens that had long ago withered were planted once more with flowers and young trees.

Even those who had fled to neighbouring regions places such as Whaley Saw—returned after hearing the news.

They came carrying wagons filled with food, timber, tools, and medicine. Some brought livestock while others brought craftsmen.

Many simply brought willing hands.

No one asked who had once been a prisoner, and no one cared who had once been a guard.

There was only work to be done.

And together...they did it.

Gregor Naught rose from its own ashes.

Not as the city it had once been...but as something better.

* * *

The streets were wider, and the homes were stronger.

The marketplace was redesigned to welcome travelers rather than intimidate them. For the first time in decades, the city felt alive instead of confined.

Even Cassian worked.

To the surprise of nearly everyone. He didn't bark orders from a distance. He didn't sit back and watch others struggle.

Instead, he was usually the first person anyone saw in the morning. Carrying enormous slabs of stone across his shoulders. Hauling timber that normally required six men to lift.

Reinforcing collapsing foundations with his own hands. When workers became exhausted, he quietly took over without complaint before moving on to the next task.

More than once, people caught themselves staring.

It was difficult to reconcile the man who had nearly destroyed the city... With the one helping rebuild every inch of it.

Shinsei noticed it too.

Though she refused to admit it aloud.

"...Honestly..."

She sighed while hauling another stack of blueprints beneath one arm.

"You could at least pretend you're tired."

Cassian effortlessly dropped another stone block into place.

THOOM!

He dusted off his hands.

"I am tired."

Shinsei raised an eyebrow.

"You've been smiling all day."

"I smile when I'm tired."

"You smile all the time."

"...Exactly."

She pinched the bridge of her nose.

"You're impossible."

"And yet..."

Cassian grinned.

"...the walls are still standing."

Shinsei clicked her tongue and walked away before she was tempted to throw something at him.

Not that she would admit it...But she smiled too.

Meanwhile...Daito and his companions spent the first several days recovering.

Their injuries had been unlike anything they had suffered before.

Bruises faded.

Burns healed.

Broken muscles slowly regained their strength.

Each passing day brought them closer to their former selves.

Monday's lightning gradually stabilized again, no longer erupting uncontrollably whenever he moved.

Brandon resumed his training.

Champagne somehow found enough energy to joke even while carrying building supplies across the city.

Wei-Wan immersed himself in studying the strange phenomena they had witnessed during the battle, filling notebook after notebook with observations.

Zachia quietly helped reinforce the city's defenses, ensuring Gregor Naught would never again fall so easily.

Aerin volunteered wherever she was needed, earning the admiration of nearly everyone she met.

As for Daito...his recovery was slower.

Physically, his body healed, the blood disappeared, the pain faded, and his strength returned little by little.

Yet...sometimes, without warning...he would stop.

His gaze would drift into the distance.

For only a second....then it would pass.

He never spoke about it, but he could still feel it. Deep inside himself, something remained.

Not active, not hostile.

Simply waiting, watching and sleeping.

The memory of those five figures clawing their way through his body refused to leave him.

Neither did the strange reaction of the Traditional Blade.

He told no one.

There was no point.

Whatever had happened...It wasn't over.

One month later....

Gregor Naught celebrated its rebirth.

The city had transformed beyond recognition.

Colorful banners stretched across newly rebuilt streets, fluttering gently in the afternoon breeze.

Lanterns hung from balconies and rooftops, casting warm light over smiling faces as merchants reopened their shops and children ran laughing through the crowded avenues.

Music echoed from every corner of the city. Fresh food filled the air with inviting aromas. Laughter replaced fear.

Hope replaced despair.

At the very heart of Gregor Naught, a grand stage had been erected in the central square.

Thousands gathered before it.

Citizens. Former prisoners. Workers. Families. Travelers.

Everyone who had helped rebuild the city stood together without barriers separating them.

Near the middle of the crowd stood Daito and his companions.

None of them spoke they simply watched.

Cassian stepped onto the stage.

For once...There was no theatrical entrance. No exaggerated pose and no smug grin. He accepted the microphone in silence and slowly looked across the sea of faces before him.

The celebration gradually quieted.

Every eye settled on him.

He took a slow breath.

"...One month ago..."

His voice carried effortlessly across the square.

"...this city disappeared."

A brief pause.

"It wasn't damaged."

His eyes swept across the rebuilt streets surrounding them.

"It wasn't defeated."

Another pause.

"It was erased."

No one interrupted.

Everyone remembered.

They remembered the crater, the smoke and the despair.

Cassian slowly raised one hand and gestured toward the city surrounding them.

"And yet..."

A faint smile appeared.

"...look around."

The people did, children laughed nearby.

Market stalls bustled with life.

Freshly built homes stood proudly beneath the daylight sky.

"...It's still here."

His smile widened ever so slightly.

"Not because of me."

He lowered his hand.

"Not because of the guards."

His voice became quieter.

"...Because of you."

The crowd stood motionless.

Every person listened.

"You carried stone."

"You lifted one another."

"You chose to build instead of blame."

He nodded slowly.

"...Gregor Naught stands today because its people refused to let it die."

Silence.

Then someone began clapping.

Another joined.

Then another.

Within moments—

CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! CLAP!

Thunderous applause erupted across the square.

People cheered.

Some wiped tears from their eyes. Others embraced those standing beside them. Daito watched quietly from the crowd.

His arms folded across his chest.

"...He's changed."

Aerin smiled softly beside him.

"He has."

Daito remained silent for several moments before giving a small nod.

"...Yeah."

High above the crowd...Cassian's eyes shifted.

For the briefest moment...they met Daito's.

Neither smiled, neither nodded and neither needed to.

Everything that needed to be said had already been understood.

The battle had ended.

But neither of them believed their journey had.
