Lux stood in the middle of his room. A few hours had passed, but he still could not believe it. He had actually obtained a divine beast and even received a contract.
Well, that would make things a little complicated.
There were so called beast battles. In them, two people fought each other, and the goal was to knock out the opponent. But Throne was a divine beast. Lux had to hide it at any cost.
He sat down on his bed and let out a frustrated sigh.
"Great, now I am lucky once and still cannot even fight with Throne."
It would be annoying to reveal that Lux had a divine beast. Well, at least for now.
Many people would hunt Lux and look at him differently. Everything would change. Everything would change too quickly.
No. Lux did not want that. Not this fast.
"Everything will change, but slowly, and that is good!"
Lux stood up again. His little daydream was over.
He put on a black fluffy sweater. He pulled his phone out of his black jogging pants, turned it on, and looked at the time.
20:35 AM
The phone light brightened the dark room.
Lux went to the door, put on his white sneakers, and left his apartment.
It was Saturday.
He wanted to clear his thoughts a little in the evening. The best way was jogging. That way he would stay fit, which was important for a Beast Slayer. And it was fun. He could think about everything while doing it. Perfect.
So Lux took a deep breath and ran off.
His speed was not human, and within seconds Lux had reached a fast pace.
After a few minutes, Lux arrived at a park. The moon could be seen halfway because a large tree covered the other half with its huge leaves.
This tree meant something to Lux.
He had always played here with his older brother. They had trained for hours under this tree.
Lux closed his eyes for a moment and remembered.
Elias had always had far more talent than Lux and was therefore much stronger. Lux remembered how Elias always let him win.
Lux took a breath. Then he moved closer to the tree.
Lux dropped to the ground and began training.
He started with push ups, about 130 of them.
Then he stopped for a moment.
Sweat fell from his forehead, and Lux breathed heavily.
"Phew. That was exhausting. I need to train harder, or I can forget about this Beast Slayer job!"
That thought supported Lux, and so he gained more motivation.
Lux went into a squat and sprang back up again. He repeated it for about 20 minutes.
"Puhh. Puhh."
His breathing stopped for a moment.
"H huh?"
Lux's phone vibrated and would not stop. He immediately pulled it out.
His breathing caught.
[Level 1 Portal Nearby!]
Lux closed his phone, and the vibration stopped.
The park was empty and dark. Only above a bench not far away, a blue portal floated. A level 1 to 3 portal.
But since his phone reported level 1, that was how it was.
All people in Porious City were forced to get this app. On new phones it was already installed. The app warned about nearby portals and showed them on a map.
Lux breathed heavily. He had absolutely no good experience with a portal. No, he had lost everything to one.
Lux wanted to run away quickly. He wanted to leave the park. But suddenly, the silver contract sheet appeared beside Lux. It floated next to him and was pushed a little by the wind, but it stayed in place.
Lux read the words and sighed.
[Close the Level 1 Portal and receive the Beginner's Dagger.]
Lux watched as the silver sheet dissolved into the air.
"I I do not know. I do not have a weapon and… no! I can do this!"
Lux's mood changed a little. Motivation appeared, and so did determination.
"I can do this. After all, it is only a level 1 portal. A first year magic school student should be able to handle that!"
Lux thought, then turned toward the portal without thinking about it for long. He ran.
Maybe it was stupid. Maybe he was scared. Maybe this was a big mistake.
Lux did not care. He wanted to overcome his fear. He wanted that dagger so badly.
So he stopped right in front of the portal.
It was azure blue from the outside and inside. It moved slightly. It looked as if there was lightning in the middle, massing and flashing.
Lux took a breath.
"Good. It is only a level 1 portal. At most two to five enemies! I can do this!"
Lux was just about to step in when something grabbed his shoulder.
Lux looked back and was surprised.
It was a boy, slightly smaller than Lux. He had messy black hair, red eyes, and a cold expression.
His style was questionable. He wore blue joggers and a torn red jacket.
Lux was about to ask something, but then he heard the boy's voice. It was calm and cold.
"Wait," the boy said and held Lux back just before he entered.
"It is not a level 1 portal," the boy said and moved away from the portal while pulling Lux with him.
But Lux pulled his hands back and stopped the boy.
"Hey, wait! What is this supposed to mean?" Lux asked, turning to the boy.
"It is a so called False Beast. It is dangerous for weak Beast Slayers. I will explain it to you. It is a beast that disguises itself as a portal. It does everything right until someone enters. Watch."
The boy suddenly had an empty coffee cup in his hand. With a skilled throw, he tossed it into the portal.
The portal immediately swallowed the coffee cup. A few seconds later, both of their phones rang.
[Level 3 Portal Nearby!]
Both of them turned their phones off. The boy grinned slightly.
"Smarter than you thought, right? It only shows its real strength now. Luckily only a level 3! Hahah!"
Lux stopped. The words had caught him. Besides, what did he mean by "only"? A level 3 portal would be impossible for Lux to fight against.
Lux let out a heavy breath.
"T-thank you!"
The boy only blinked.
Then he suddenly stepped forward.
"So, are you coming? We still have to defeat it after all!"
Lux stepped forward and was just about to enter the portal.
