Chapter 12 - CHAPTER 10: First Kiss, First Confessions

Thursday evening at The Daily Grind was quieter than usual.

The hum of the espresso machine and the faint scent of coffee were the only things filling the café. Lia Henderson wiped down the counter for the third time, mentally preparing herself for the weekend chaos ahead.

And, naturally, Ethan Cruz was there—perched in his corner like he'd moved in permanently, laptop open but attention entirely on her.

"…You're still here," Lia muttered, more tired than annoyed.

"Of course," he said softly, leaning back in his chair. "…Some things are too important to miss. You, for instance."

"…Stop," she said, cheeks heating as she tried to focus on stacking napkins instead of thinking about the dangerously close distance between them.

"Stop what?" he asked innocently, though his grin betrayed him.

"…Stop… everything," she muttered, flustered.

The café quieted even further as the evening progressed. A single customer lingered, nursing a latte, while Lia and Ethan found themselves in a rare, uninterrupted moment.

"…Why are we still standing here?" she asked, pretending to organize sugar packets.

"Because," he said softly, stepping closer, "…I like moments like this. Just… us."

"…Not-a-date," she whispered, trying to maintain the pretense of calm.

"Not-a-date," he echoed, leaning closer. "…For now."

Her heart raced. "…For now?"

"Yes," he said softly. "…For now."

Then, it happened.

A tray of pastries wobbled precariously on the counter. Without thinking, Ethan reached out, steadying it—and Lia's hand brushed his.

"…Seriously?!" she muttered, though the blush rising to her cheeks betrayed her.

"…It's just a touch," he said softly. "…But somehow… it feels like more."

"…Stop saying things like that!" she whispered, though her voice trembled.

"And yet," he said, leaning closer, "…I can't stop."

Her breath caught. Their faces were inches apart. The café seemed to fade around them—the distant chatter, the smell of coffee, the hum of the espresso machine—all gone.

And then… their lips met.

Softly, hesitantly, but with a certainty that left no room for doubt.

It wasn't perfect—it was messy, slightly awkward, and completely theirs.

When they pulled back, both were flushed, hearts racing, and laughing softly at the ridiculousness of the moment.

"…Wow," Lia whispered, breathless.

"…Yeah," Ethan said, grinning. "…Wow."

By the end of the evening, as they walked home together in the quiet city streets, Lia couldn't stop smiling.

"…So," she said, finally daring to meet his eyes, "…this… thing… us… it's real now, right?"

"Real," he said softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "…And messy. And chaotic. And… amazing."

"…I like amazing," she whispered, smiling.

"Me too," he said, leaning in for another quick, teasing kiss.

And for the first time, Lia Henderson realized: maybe chaos wasn't so bad—especially when it came with someone like Ethan Cruz.
