Chapter 20 - CHAPTER 18: Birthday Blunders and Balloon Chaos

Thursday morning at The Daily Grind buzzed with the usual energy: the espresso machine hissed, trays clattered, and customers drifted in with half-asleep smiles.

But today, Lia Henderson had an extra reason to be nervous.

"…I can't believe I forgot," she muttered, arranging muffins like they were a life-or-death puzzle.

"…Forgot what?" Ethan asked, leaning casually against the counter.

"…Your birthday!" she exclaimed, cheeks heating. "…I didn't plan anything… and now it's today…"

Ethan blinked. "…My birthday?"

"…Yes!" she whispered, panicking slightly. "…And I thought we could… do something. Maybe balloons. Or cake. Or… something!"

"…You've been panicking about my birthday all morning?" he asked, laughing softly. "…You're ridiculous."

"…Thank you," she said, flustered. "…I try."

The morning chaos didn't help:

A delivery of muffins tipped over, rolling dangerously close to the espresso machine.

Latte foam exploded like a tiny volcano on the counter.

A toddler barreled past, nearly knocking over a tray of croissants.

Ethan jumped in to "help," which mostly involved leaning across counters and accidentally splattering hot chocolate on her sleeve.

"…Seriously?!" Lia shouted, laughing despite herself.

"…I'm helping!" he said, grinning. "…And maybe making a mess, too."

"…You're impossible!" she muttered, brushing crumbs from her apron.

By mid-morning, Lia had a plan. She grabbed a box from the storage room: balloons, streamers, and a tiny cupcake with a single candle.

"…You brought balloons?" Ethan asked, raising an eyebrow as she decorated the café while balancing trays.

"…Yes!" she said, grinning. "…Happy birthday to you! Messy, chaotic, and full of love!"

He laughed, eyes softening. "…You're ridiculous… but perfect."

"…Stop," she whispered, heart racing.

"Never," he said, leaning closer for a quick, teasing kiss.

The day only got funnier:

A rogue balloon floated up and got stuck in the ceiling fan.

Coffee cups clinked like a tiny orchestra as Ethan tried to free it.

A customer mistook the decorations for a themed "birthday latte" event, adding to the chaos.

"…Why do I even try?" Lia muttered, laughing hysterically.

"…Because," Ethan said, holding her hand across the counter, "…you're amazing. Messy, chaotic, hilarious… amazing."

Her cheeks warmed. "…And you're impossible."

"And yet," he whispered, leaning closer, "…completely yours."

By evening, after the chaos had settled and the cupcake candle blown out, Lia and Ethan sat together with steaming mugs of hot chocolate.

"…Best birthday ever?" she asked softly.

"…Absolutely," he said, brushing her hair back. "…Messy, ridiculous, chaotic… but perfect. Because it's with you."

"…Me too," Lia whispered, curling into his side. "…I wouldn't trade this… or you… for anything."

And as the café lights dimmed, they both realized: chaos, coffee, and a few flying muffins could never compete with the perfect, messy magic of being together.
