CHAPTER 14 — THE INTERVIEW
**Copenhagen — January 1991**
Søren Kvist had been writing about Danish football for eleven years.
He was forty-three, worked out of Ekstra Bladet's sports desk on Rådhuspladsen, and had the particular quality of a journalist who had covered enough of the same story — talented player, modest club, eventual departure — to recognise when something was genuinely different from the pattern. He'd been trying to get Mikkel on the record since October and the patience itself said something about how seriously he was taking it.
They met at a café on Strøget on a Tuesday morning, neutral ground that had been Kvist's suggestion. Mikkel had thought about this question specifically — not in the sense of preparing a performance, but in the sense of deciding what was actually true and worth saying. *"A football agent based in Copenhagen. Kvist wrote something. *"You placed Schmeichel at Manchester United. That's not a modest first statement."*
*"It's the logical outcome of identifying the right player and being patient about finding the right club. Schmeichel is the best goalkeeper in Scandinavia and probably top five in Europe. United are getting a bargain at £350,000."*
*"You're comfortable saying that publicly."*
*"It'll be obvious within a year. I'd rather say it now."*
Kvist looked at him with the assessing quality of a journalist deciding whether someone was confident or reckless and working out which made the better story. *"Your other clients — Vilfort, Elstrup, Sivebæk. What's the common thread?"*
*"Quality that wasn't being properly represented. Vilfort is one of the most intelligent midfielders in the Danish league and was earning wages that didn't reflect that. Elstrup was heading toward a contract renewal with no one in his corner. Sivebæk had European experience and was being offered a pay cut by Monaco." *Mikkel paused. *"None of these situations were unusual. They're the norm for Danish players. The agents who should be handling them either don't exist or aren't good enough."*
*"And you are."*
*"I'm better than the alternative, which at the moment is nothing."*
Kvist wrote something longer this time. Outside on Strøget a group of tourists were photographing the pedestrian street with the focused intensity of people determined to document everything and experience nothing. A tram ground past in the distance.
*"There's a perception,"* Kvist said carefully, *"that agents are — destructive. That they create instability, push moves that serve their commission rather than the player."*
*"It's an accurate perception for a lot of agents."*
*"But not you."*
*"I turned down pushing Schmeichel toward Southampton in November because it wasn't the right club for him. Southampton had a formal offer on the table with a deadline and I held it while I pursued United. The commission from a Southampton deal would have been the same. The decision wasn't about the money."*
*"What was it about?"*
*"Placing the right player at the right club. If I do that consistently, the reputation builds and the business grows. If I chase commissions, I might earn more in year two and nothing in year five because nobody trusts me."*
Kvist looked at him. *"That's a very considered answer."*
*"It's the true one."*
A pause. The journalist turned his pen over once on the notepad. *"Where does this go? Trane Sports in five years — what does it look like?"*
Mikkel thought about what he could say and what he couldn't. He couldn't say *I represent most of the squad that wins Euro 92.* He couldn't say *Brian Laudrup signs with me next week and in four years he's one of the best players in Europe.* He said instead: *"The Danish market is largely mine already. I intend to extend that to the broader Scandinavian market and then use the European relationships those transfers build to become relevant across the continent. Not a large agency — I'm not interested in volume. A precise one."*
*"Precise,"* Kvist repeated, as though testing the word.
*"Quality over quantity. Fewer clients, properly served."*
Kvist wrote for a moment, then clicked the recorder off. The official part of the interview was apparently done. He sat back and looked at Mikkel with the more relaxed quality of a journalist who had what he needed and was now just curious.
*"Off the record,"* he said. *"Is Laudrup next?"*
Mikkel looked at him steadily. *"I don't discuss clients or potential clients off the record."*
Kvist smiled — not surprised, just acknowledging. *"Alright,"* he said. *"Fair enough."*
He closed his notepad and picked up the recorder. *"It'll run Friday. Sports section, probably page three or four depending on what else happens this week."*
*"I appreciate the time,"* Mikkel said.
*"You gave me a good interview,"* Kvist said simply. *"That's increasingly rare."*

At the Danish Football Union offices a senior administrator read it over morning coffee and made a note to follow the agency's progress more formally. At three Superliga clubs directors of football read it and had the specific reaction of people who recognised they'd been slow to something — not panicked, but attentive in a new way. Brian arrived at the café in Valby — the same one as October, which felt deliberate — ten minutes early, which was different from last time and said something about where his head was. He looked the same as he always did, slightly windswept, the expensive-without-advertising jacket. But there was a quality of settledness about him that hadn't been present in October — the difference between a man watching something develop and a man who had decided.
Mikkel had the scout report in his head and the market analysis on two pages of paper in his jacket pocket. He put neither of them on the table. Laudrup had asked for a proper client meeting, which meant he already knew what he wanted — the paperwork was confirmation, not persuasion.

Mikkel answered all four with the same directness he'd used with every client — no inflation, no promises he couldn't keep, no flattery that Laudrup would see through immediately and discard along with the rest of the pitch.
The fourth answer — fifteen percent of wages negotiated — made Laudrup pause.

He got back to the office and found a message from Tøfting waiting for him.

Mikkel put the message on his desk next to the notepad and the list of names. Added Tøfting's to it with a circle rather than an underline — circled meant active, underlined meant pending.
Then he sat down and started planning 1991.
