CHAPTER 63 — NEW BLOOD
**Copenhagen — January 1993**
The eleven applications were on Anders' desk by Tuesday morning, organised into three categories.
*"Yes, no, and maybe,"* Anders said, when Mikkel arrived. *"Six yes, three maybe, two no."*
*"You've already assessed them."*
*"I read them over the weekend,"* Anders said.
*"The advertisements went up Monday."*
*"I'm efficient when I'm busy,"* Anders said. *"When I'm not busy I'm less efficient. Some people need space to function. I need pressure."*
*"Did you read about that too?"* Rasmus said, from behind his monitor.
*"Psychology article,"* Anders said. *"Also over the weekend."*
*"While reading eleven applications,"* Rasmus said.
*"And the Brandt terms,"* Anders said.
Mikkel looked at him. *"Those were confidential."*
*"The shared desk is not a confidential location,"* Anders said. *"If something is confidential it belongs in a locked drawer. I don't make the rules."*
*"You absolutely make rules,"* Rasmus said. *"You made the filing system rules, the coffee protocol —"*
*"Guidelines,"* Anders said. *"Not rules."*
*"The difference being?"*
*"Rules are mandatory. Guidelines are strongly recommended."*
*"Is the coffee protocol strongly recommended?"*
*"Very strongly,"* Anders said.
Astrid walked past both of them. *"The applications. Anders and I agree on five of the six yes pile. We disagree on one."*
*"Which one?"* Mikkel said.
*"Three languages, match analysis experience,"* Astrid said. *"Anders says yes. I say maybe."*
*"Why maybe?"* Mikkel said.
*"Two previous agencies. Both dissolved within eighteen months of him joining."*
*"Correlation isn't causation,"* Anders said.
*"No,"* Astrid said. *"But it's a question worth asking."*
*"Bring him in,"* Mikkel said. *"I'll ask it directly."*
*"That's very you,"* Anders said.
*"Is it?"*
*"Direct questions, assess whether the answer is honest or managed. It's your primary technique."*
*"You've noticed that."*
*"Fourteen months,"* Anders said. *"I've noticed most things."*

The administrative interviews happened Wednesday and Thursday. The first candidate had rehearsed answers — the polished quality of performed competence rather than actual competence, the difference subtle but present. Mikkel thanked him and moved on.
The second was **Lone Svensson** — thirty-one, previously at a Danish sports marketing firm. She sat down, looked around, and said: *"Smaller than the Politiken piece suggested."*
*"Everyone says that,"* Mikkel said.
*"Does it bother you?"*
*"It did in 1990."*
*"Good,"* she said. *"Defensive founders are difficult to work for."*
Astrid looked up from her notepad.
*"You're interviewing me,"* Mikkel said.
*"I'm assessing whether I want to work here,"* she said. *"That's technically what an interview is for both parties. I have a current position. I'm here because the agency is interesting, not because I need the work."*
*"What makes it interesting?"*
She thought about it genuinely. *"The gap between the size of the operation and the scale of what it's doing. Four people, twenty-four clients, eight countries. Either someone has built something extremely efficient or someone is about to discover they've grown faster than the infrastructure supports."*
*"Which do you think?"*
*"Both,"* she said. *"Which is why you're hiring."*
Astrid wrote something. Mikkel noted it.
*"What would you do in the first month?"* Mikkel said.
*"Watch,"* she said. *"Understand how things actually work before suggesting how they should. People who come in immediately proposing changes are usually solving problems they've misdiagnosed."*
*"Give me a likely friction point,"* Mikkel said.
She looked around the office. *"Communication between scouting and client management. Rasmus generates intelligence. Mikkel acts on it. There's probably a lag that creates risk windows."*
*"How do you know Rasmus's name?"*
*"The Politiken piece mentioned a scout. The BT follow-up named him. I read both before coming."*
Astrid put her pen down, looked at her notepad, picked it up again.
*"We'll be in touch,"* Mikkel said.
*"I know,"* Lone said. *"I'm your hire."*
*"You're very confident,"* Mikkel said.
*"I'm accurate,"* she said. *"Different thing."*
She left. Mikkel looked at Astrid.
*"She's right,"* Astrid said. *"She's the hire."*
*"She told us that before the interview ended,"* Mikkel said.
*"And she was correct,"* Astrid said. *"Which is more important than the confidence."*

The scout interviews happened Friday. Rasmus present throughout — non-negotiable, since he'd be working with whoever was hired.
The first candidate had attended forty-three Superliga matches in 1992 until Rasmus asked him to describe specific moments and the descriptions revealed someone who had attended without watching — a distinction most people didn't know existed until Rasmus explained it, at which point the candidate looked offended.
*"Attending and watching are different,"* Rasmus said afterward. *"Most people don't understand that until it's explained."*
*"How do you test for it?"* Mikkel said.
*"Ask about the sixty-third minute of a specific match,"* Rasmus said. *"People who were watching can tell you. People who were attending cannot."*
The second candidate was adequate. Rasmus delivered the word with the tone he reserved for things that were technically fine and fundamentally insufficient, which communicated everything.
The third was **Mads Christoffersen** — twenty-nine, youth coach at Silkeborg for three years.
*"Silkeborg,"* Mikkel said.
*"Under-18 and under-21,"* Mads said. *"I overlapped with Tøfting." *A pause. *"He called me actually. Said if I was thinking about scouting I should talk to Trane Sports."*
Rasmus looked at Mikkel. The look of two people recognising a pattern.
*"He does that,"* Rasmus said.
*"Does what?"* Mads said.
*"Calls people without being asked,"* Mikkel said. *"To recommend things."*
*"He said you drove to Silkeborg twice before he'd signed,"* Mads said. *"Said that told him something."*
*"It keeps telling people things,"* Mikkel said.
*"What does it tell them?"*
*"That I'm serious,"* Mikkel said. *"Apparently."*
Mads looked at him steadily. *"Are you? About the development clients — the three-star players who need two years before anything European happens?"*
Good question. The kind that showed understanding of the specific risk — development clients neglected in favour of high-value ones as an agency grew.
*"Rasmus handles the development tier,"* Mikkel said. *"That's the division. The hire supports him specifically."*
*"So you'd be working for me,"* Rasmus said, to Mads.
*"Would that be a problem?"* Mads said.
*"Depends,"* Rasmus said. *"Do you actually watch matches or just attend them?"*
*"Give me one,"* Mads said. *"I'll tell you the sixty-third minute."*
Rasmus named a specific Silkeborg match from November 1991.
Mads described the sixty-third minute accurately. Rasmus checked against his notes — which he'd brought specifically for this purpose, because Rasmus prepared for everything.
*"You were watching,"* Rasmus said.
*"I'm always watching,"* Mads said. *"It's not a skill. Just attention."*
*"It's a skill,"* Rasmus said. *"Most people don't do it."*
*"We'll be in touch,"* Mikkel said.
*"How soon?"* Mads said.
*"Today,"* Rasmus said.

They offered Lone Svensson the position Friday afternoon. She accepted in forty-five seconds.
*"Start date?"* she said.
*"February 1st,"* Mikkel said.
*"Two weeks notice at my current position,"* she said. *"February 1st works. One question."*
*"Yes."*
*"The coffee machine. Is it always that bad?"*
*"It —"* Mikkel paused. *"It varies."*
*"I'll bring something better on the first day,"* she said.
*"Astrid will —"* Mikkel started.
*"Astrid will be fine,"* Lone said. *"I'll manage it."* She ended the call before he could respond.
Mikkel sat with the feeling of someone who had hired a person and was fairly certain the hire would change the office dynamics in ways he couldn't fully predict.
He mentioned this to Astrid.
*"Good,"* Astrid said. *"The dynamics need changing."*
*"Do they?"*
*"Rasmus attends matches nobody asked him to attend. Anders writes memos nobody requested. You call clients on Christmas Day."* She paused. *"It's functional. It's just a specific kind of functional that works for four people and won't work for six."*
*"You've been thinking about this since November,"* Mikkel said. Not a question.
*"When the Politiken piece ran and the calls started coming,"* she said. *"I knew we'd be hiring in January."*
*"You knew in November."*
*"Obviously,"* she said. And went back to her work.

They offered Mads the scout position the same afternoon. He accepted immediately, then asked whether he could attend matches before the official start date.
*"This weekend,"* he said. *"Three matches I've been wanting to watch. It would be nice to expense them."*
Mikkel thought about Rasmus in Norway over Christmas. The ferry ticket. The pattern.
*"Attend the matches,"* Mikkel said. *"Write the reports. We'll backdate the expenses."*
*"Excellent,"* Mads said.
*"And Mads — tell Tøfting thank you."*
*"He'll say he was just passing on a number,"* Mads said.
*"Tell him anyway,"* Mikkel said. *"He'll appreciate it more than he shows."*
*"How do you know that?"*
*"I've been watching him for two years,"* Mikkel said. *"When you watch someone long enough —"*
*"You stop guessing,"* Mads said. *"He told me you said that."*
*"Of course he did,"* Mikkel said.

Friday evening. The office settling.
Rasmus writing his Molde report. Anders updating the onboarding calendar. Astrid on the phone with the patience of someone who had decided patience was more efficient than its absence.
*"Rasmus,"* Mikkel said.
*"Yes."*
*"The sixty-third minute. You used it in the interview. I told you that?"*
*"October 1991 staff meeting,"* Rasmus said. *"You were explaining what distinguished clients worth pursuing from ones who were merely good. You said the moments nobody notices. The sixty-third minute was the example."*
*"I didn't realise you'd been absorbing things,"* Mikkel said.
*"We work here,"* Anders said. *"Absorbing things is part of it."*
*"You say things worth absorbing,"* Rasmus said. *"So we absorb them."*
*"And use them,"* Mikkel said.
*"That's what absorbing is for,"* Astrid said.
Mikkel looked at them. The four people who had built this with him — each having decided the work was worth ten to eight starts and seven o'clock finishes and matches attended on Christmas trips to Norway.
*"Good week,"* he said.
*"Exceptional,"* Astrid said.
*"Two hires,"* Anders said. *"Schmeichel. Brandt meeting."*
*"And Mads remembers the sixty-third minute,"* Rasmus said. *"Which is the most important thing."*
*"That's what you're most pleased about,"* Mikkel said.
*"Obviously,"* Rasmus said. *"Yes."*
Mikkel picked up his coat. *"Monday."*
*"Monday,"* the three of them said — the approximate unison they'd never coordinated and never discussed but had developed anyway.

In Hamburg, Tøfting received Mads' text: *got the job. thank you.*
He replied: *told you.*
Then went back to his passing drills — the Hamburg January dark outside the floodlights, the ball and the wall and the specific discipline of a footballer working on the thing that needed work. His mother had attended last Saturday's match. She'd interrogated the journalist beside her about tactical systems for ninety minutes. He'd covered German football for fifteen years. She'd found him insufficiently specific.
Tøfting had scored in the seventy-first minute. His mother had cried.
He hadn't told anyone. Some things were private.
The half second. Still improving.
