Chapter 1 - Find

Story 1: The Ghost in the Grocery Store

*(Fits Chapter: "Where Did I Put My Keys?" / Daily Glitches)*

I was standing in the cereal aisle, holding a box of oats, when I suddenly froze. My hand went to my pocket. Empty. I patted my other pocket. Empty. I checked the basket. Nothing.

**Huh?** Where is my phone?

Panic set in immediately. Did I leave it on the conveyor belt at the last store? Did it fall out of my bag in the car? I retraced my steps mentally, sweating slightly. People were brushing past me, grabbing their sugary flakes, while I was having a mini crisis. I even asked a stock boy, "Excuse me, has anyone turned in a phone?" He looked at me like I was crazy.

I walked back to my car, defeated, ready to call my bank from a payphone (if they still existed) to freeze my cards. I unlocked the car door and sat in the driver's seat. I took a deep breath to calm down. Then, I reached for the ignition to start the car so I could drive home and panic there.

But the car wouldn't start without the key fob. And where was the key fob? It was attached to... my phone. Which was currently lighting up in my left hand, playing a podcast I had forgotten I started.

**Hmm...**

I stared at the glowing screen. How does the brain do that? How can I be so convinced I lost something that is literally fused to my hand? It wasn't just forgetfulness; it was a total disconnect between my mind and my reality. We live so much inside our heads—worrying about emails, remembering lists, replaying conversations—that we stop feeling what's actually in our hands. Maybe we aren't losing things; maybe we're just losing *presence*. I put the phone in the cup holder, where I could see it, and finally bought the oats.
