Chapter 21 - Chapter 21 — Core

He laid everything out in front of him on the flat rock.

One Epic Tier 2 core base, the investment bar on it still pulsing with a compounding rate that had been running for five days. Three supplementary core materials purchased from the independent merchant in Valresh, low-grade individually but carrying inherent world value the Compound System had confirmed at acquisition. Three Common grade core bases from the starter settlement, uninvested, worth almost nothing by themselves. The Voidstone Shard, Legendary Tier 3, sitting in the centre of the arrangement with the particular density of something that had been compressed beyond what its size suggested.

He looked at the collection for a moment.

Then he opened the Fuse tab.

[Fuse: Select 2 or more assets with active investment to combine.]

[Eligible assets:]

[Heat Control (SSS) — Return value: 11,847,330 VP]

[Combustion (SS) — Return value: 3,840,220 VP] [Thermal Mapping (A) — Return value: 1,240,880 VP]

[Deflection Current (E) — Return value: 124,440 VP]

[Wind Affinity (A) — Return value: 847,330 VP]

[Core Base (Epic T2) — Return value: 847,330 VP]

The supplementary materials and Common core bases were not in the eligible list because they carried no active investment. He had not put VP into them. They had world value but not compounded value, which meant the Fuse tab did not recognise them as fusion inputs in the standard sense.

He checked the system notation panel and thought about what he knew of the fusion mechanic. The Fuse tab required active investment. The supplementary materials and Common bases needed to be in the fusion. He solved the problem the same way he solved most problems, which was to invest in them first.

He put 10,000 VP into each of the three supplementary materials and 5,000 VP into each of the three Common core bases.

[Total additional VP deployed: 45,000 VP]

[VP balance: 302,110]

He waited thirty seconds. Long enough for the compounding to register as active rather than just initiated. Then he opened the Fuse tab again.

[Eligible assets:]

[Heat Control (SSS) — Return value: 11,847,330 VP]

[Combustion (SS) — Return value: 3,840,220 VP]

[Thermal Mapping (A) — Return value: 1,240,880 VP]

[Deflection Current (E) — Return value: 124,440 VP]

[Wind Affinity (A) — Return value: 847,330 VP]

[Core Base (Epic T2) — Return value: 847,330 VP]

[Supplementary Material x3 — Return value: 10,000 VP each - <1min]

[Common Core Base x3 — Return value: 5,000 VP each - <1min]

He did not select the skill investments. He was not fusing Heat Control or Combustion into the core. Those were separate assets with their own trajectories and he was not combining them with anything until the projections told him it was the right moment. What he selected was everything core-related.

[Selected for fusion:]

[Core Base (Epic T2) — Return value: 847,330 VP]

[Supplementary Material x3 — Return value: 30,000 VP combined]

[Common Core Base x3 — Return value: 15,000 VP combined]

[Voidstone Shard — Return value: ???]

The Voidstone Shard had no return value listed because he had not invested in it. But when he selected it a different line appeared beneath the selection.

[Voidstone Shard (Legendary T3): World value contribution. Non-invested assets with inherent world value may participate in fusion as passive contributors. Contribution calculated from world value rather than return value.]

[World value contribution: 4,847,000 VP equivalent]

He read that line twice. The system had a mechanic for including high-value uninvested items in fusion as passive contributors, their world value converted to an equivalent contribution figure. He had not known this existed. He filed it as a mechanic to explore further later and confirmed the selection.

[Combined fusion value:]

[Invested assets: 892,330 VP]

[World value contribution: 4,847,000 VP equivalent]

[Total fusion input: 5,739,330 VP]

[All selected assets will be consumed.]

[Proceed to fusion roll?]

He activated the Fusion Insight consumable before confirming.

Here is the rewritten section from the Fusion Insight prompt onward:

[Fusion Insight active.]

[Projected grade range for current fusion: Exalted to Unmarked]

[Roll required for Unmarked: 95 or above]

[Roll required for Exalted: any]

Exalted as the floor. He read that line twice. The Fusion Insight had shown Mythical to Exalted in the previous projection he had run as a test. Whatever the Voidstone Shard's world value contribution was doing to the fusion calculation, it had shifted the entire range upward. Exalted was now the worst case outcome.

He confirmed the fusion.

The roll appeared in the centre of the panel the way it always did, large and prominent, spinning through values before decelerating in the upper range and landing.

[Fusion roll: 97 / 100]

[Multiplier applied: x97 to total fusion input.]

[Base fusion value: 5,739,330 VP]

[Post-multiplier value: 551,714,910 VP]

[Calculating result...]

[Fusion complete.]

[New asset created:]

[Magic Core — Voidforge Absolute]

[Grade: Unmarked] [Tier: 2]

[Stat bonuses on installation:]

[All stats: +300% base. Increases to +550% on full refinement.]

[Natural mana recovery: +800%]

[Skill output potency: +120% to Fire attributed skills]

[Skill output potency: +90% to Wind attributed skills]

[Void penetration: +60% on all skill outputs. Void attribute bypasses standard resistances and defensive layers.]

[Effects:]

[Void Absorption: Passively absorbs residual void energy from the environment and defeated enemies. Absorbed void energy charges the Void Pool.]

[Void Pool: 0 / 500. Void energy can be spent to empower skills, extend range, or increase discharge intensity at will.]

[Thermal Resonance: Fire and Wind skill outputs interact with each other automatically when used within the same exchange. Combined outputs produce a resonance effect that exceeds the sum of the two individual outputs. Resonance intensity scales with proficiency of both skills involved.]

[Abilities:]

[1. Void Mantle: At the cost of 15 mana per second, envelop your body in a void field that provides +400% Damage Resistance and reduces all incoming physical force by 35%. While active, any skill discharged through the Void Mantle carries an additional void penetration layer.]

[2. Core Surge: Consume 100 Void Pool charge to release a full-body output burst. All active skill potency doubles for 8 seconds. Cooldown: 30 minutes.]

[3. ??? — Awakens at 60% core refinement.]

[4. ??? — Awakens at 90% core refinement.]

[Note: Unmarked grade core at Tier 2 is beyond classification. The Record cannot appraise this asset. All properties listed are system-generated and may be incomplete. Additional properties may become visible as user tier advances.]

He did not move for a long time.

Unmarked. The grade the Record returned blank on, the grade described in the world's classification framework as something seen perhaps once per era. He had fused one at Tier 2 using materials from a starter settlement merchant and a tournament prize.

He looked at the Thermal Resonance entry. Fire and Wind skill outputs interacting automatically, combined output exceeding the sum of both. He had SSS-rank Heat Control and SS-rank Combustion on the fire side and a growing Wind affinity building on the other. The resonance mechanic connected them at the core level, which meant every future skill in either element fed into the same interaction framework without him having to manage the combination manually.

He looked at the Void Pool. 0 out of 500. He thought about what Core Surge did at full output, all active skill potency doubled for eight seconds, and what Heat Control SSS and Combustion SS at doubled potency meant for anything on the receiving end, and then he stopped thinking about it because the calculation did not have a satisfying conclusion at his current reference point.

He installed it.

The installation was not like anything that had come before it. The Exalted T2 core installation had been a restructuring. This was an overwrite. The Voidforge Absolute settled into place and the body's response was immediate and total, the 300% stat boost arriving not as an adjustment but as a redefinition of what the frame could hold, the numbers climbing past anything the fourth zone had produced in the entire prior conversation between his body and the world around him.

He sat still for a full minute and breathed carefully and let the restructuring complete at its own pace.

When he opened his eyes the world looked the same. The fourth zone's rock formations and tree line and the distant thermal signatures of creatures in the undergrowth were identical to what they had been ninety seconds ago. But the information density of what Thermal Mapping was returning had sharpened past every previous baseline, the Thermal Resonance passive interacting with the skill's operational layer immediately on core installation, and his awareness of the ambient environment had taken on a depth that the A-rank skill at proficiency 2 had not previously produced.

He stood and checked the partial stat screen.

[HP: 2,890/2,890]

[MP: 2,590/2,590]

[Void Pool: 0/500]

[Core refinement: 0%]

He moved his right hand and felt the body respond at a speed that had no prior reference point in his experience of Tier 1. Not faster in the way a Boost activation felt faster. Faster in the way that a different machine felt different from the previous one, the quality of the response changed rather than just the quantity.

He walked to the nearest fourth zone creature the Thermal Mapping had flagged and activated Void Mantle for the duration of the approach.

The creature turned when it registered him. Level 84. Thirty-six levels above him. It had the particular presence of something that had been the apex of its zone long enough to have no learned caution.

He used Combustion SS through the Void Mantle, a single Focused Point discharge, and watched what the Void Mantle's penetration layer did to the interaction between the skill output and the creature's natural defensive hide.

The creature went down before it had completed its first movement toward him.

He looked at where it had been.

[VP received: 1,240]

[Void Pool: 12/500]

The pool charged from kills. He filed the rate, approximately 12 units per level-80 creature, and kept moving.

Level 49 arrived from the next three kills. Level 50 followed from a creature cluster he moved through in a continuous engagement that lasted under a minute, the new body's output at Void Mantle plus Combustion SS making the fourth zone feel like the eastern forest outside the starter settlement had felt in week one.

[Tier Breakthrough available.]

[All requirements met.]

[Proceed with Tier 2 breakthrough?]

He sat against a rock formation and confirmed it.

The breakthrough took three minutes and was the most significant physical event he had experienced in Erasval. The Tier 1 frame rebuilding into Tier 2 architecture at a level beneath stats, the cellular restructuring running while he kept his breathing controlled and his eyes open. The Tier Acceleration passive in the Voidforge Absolute reduced the transition penalties by 80%, which meant what would have been a period of genuine vulnerability during the rebuild passed as a minor inconvenience rather than a window of exposure.

The Record updated.

[Tier: 2 — Ranked]

[Level: 51]

[Breakthrough bonus: +1 level granted on tier advancement.]

Then the warmth in his pocket. The sovereign skill stone the old man had given him outside the mine, solid and unreadable since day four, its surface softening for the first time as something inside it moved toward the surface and broke through.

The text that appeared came through neither the Record nor the Compound System. A separate channel entirely, one he had no name for yet.

[Partial unlock achieved — Tier 2 threshold met.]

[Sovereign Skill — Fragment 1 of ???]

[Void Step (partial) — Proficiency 1]

[Movement skill. At partial unlock: instantaneous repositioning within 10 metres. Leaves no thermal signature during transit. Cannot be tracked by standard perception skills during execution. Full unlock requirements: Sovereign tier or above.]

He looked at the stone and then at the entry and then at the stone again.

The old man on the rock outside the cave on day four had given him a Sovereign-tier skill. He had known on day four that Kael would reach Tier 2. He had known on day four that the stone would respond to it.

He pocketed the stone and filed the implications of that for a moment when he had time to follow them properly.

He opened the full updated Record.

[Name: Kael]

[Level: 51]

[Tier: 2 — Ranked]

[HP: 3,120/3,120]

[MP: 3,540/3,540]

[Void Pool: 12/500]

[Core refinement: 0%]

[Strength: 356]

[Agility: 437]

[Endurance: 312]

[Intelligence: 354]

[Perception: 361]

[SKILLS:]

[Heat Control (SSS) — Proficiency 7]

[Combustion (SS) — Proficiency 6]

[Thermal Mapping (A) — Proficiency 2]

[Deflection Current (E) — Proficiency 1]

[Wind Affinity (A) — Proficiency 1] [Void Step (partial) — Proficiency 1]

[EQUIPMENT:]

[Ashveil Blade — Legendary T1]

[OTHER:]

[Magic Core — Voidforge Absolute — Unmarked T2]

[Elemental Affinity: Fire (S) / Wind (A)]

[Active Effects: Void Absorption, Thermal Resonance]

[Unknown Egg (???)]

He looked at the stat numbers for a long time. Intelligence at 354. Perception at 361. Agility at 437. These were not numbers that existed in any Record display he had seen in the starter settlement or Valresh or anywhere else he had been in twenty-one days. The Voidforge Absolute's 300% stat boost applied to a base that was already anomalous for his former tier had produced figures that the Tier 2 frame was managing without strain because the Tier Acceleration passive had smoothed the transition.

He thought about Dorin describing himself as Champion tier. He thought about the level 74 creature in the higher zone that had made him run for nine minutes and hide in a root system.

He looked at Perception 361 and thought about the Thermal Mapping at proficiency 7 through an Unmarked core with Thermal Resonance active and tried to imagine what that looked like from the outside.

He could not fully construct the image because he had never been on the outside of it.

He allocated his five stat points from the level 51 breakthrough bonus, two into Agility and two into Intelligence and one into Perception, watched the numbers update and closed the panel.

The fourth zone was quiet around him. The thermal signatures of its creatures moved through the undergrowth at the edges of his mapping range, none of them aware of what had just happened in the clearing.

He looked east toward the fifth zone boundary and the Ranked-tier creatures beyond it that had defined his operational limit an hour ago.

He invested 500,000 VP into Heat Control before standing, watched the bar extend, checked that the compounding indicators were all active and climbing and closed the Compound System panel.

[VP balance: 1,034,220]

The Void Pool sat at 12 out of 500.

He picked up his pack, felt the egg warm and steady against his back, and walked toward the fifth zone boundary without changing his pace.
