Chapter 25 - Chapter 25 — The Ashen Regent

Four days.

He spent them the way he had spent every productive stretch since the forest on day one. Mornings in the sixth zone outer ring, moving through the patrol territories with the efficiency of someone who had mapped the same ground enough times that the map was automatic. Afternoons at the inn working the potion batches, ingredients compounding in parallel while he was out, fused in sequence when he returned. Evenings with the panel open, watching the numbers and making allocation decisions.

Varn was in the common room every morning when he left and every midday when he came back. He stopped asking questions after the second day. He just watched Kael come in from the eastern gate with a full pack and no damage and ate his meal and said nothing, which was a different kind of reaction shot from the first conversation but communicated the same thing.

Level 68. Level 71. Level 74.

Three new sub-skills across the four days.

On day two a Fire sub-skill formed during a fight where Thermal Lance's sustained beam output interacted with the Void Mantle's penetration layer in a way he had not designed.

[Char Field (B) — Proficiency 1]

[Projects a sustained thermal field around the user that deals ongoing damage to anything within close range. Intensity scales with Fire affinity strength and active skill output. Does not require directional intent.]

B-grade. He invested 300,000 VP into it before the fight was finished and noted that the formation grade floor had climbed again. His Fire sub-skills were now forming at B-grade minimum. The S-rank affinity's floor was still rising.

On day three a Wind sub-skill formed while he was using Slipstream at full output in a movement sequence that required a sharp directional change.

[Gust Strike (C) — Proficiency 1]

[A concentrated wind release at the moment of directional change in movement. Converts kinetic energy from the movement into a directional force burst. Output scales with movement speed at time of activation.]

Invested 200,000 VP immediately.

On day four, the morning before the fight, a second Wind sub-skill formed during a session where he was pushing Pressure Sense to its range limit while moving.

[Wind Veil (C) — Proficiency 1]

[Wraps a thin current of wind around the user's body. Reduces sound signature to near zero. At C-grade, partially disrupts non-thermal perception skills directed at the user from outside.]

He looked at Wind Veil for a long moment. A skill that disrupted perception directed at him. He invested 400,000 VP into it and added it to the fight plan.

The morning of the fifth day he laid out what he was taking.

From the potion batches across four days he had produced thirty-one potions total, the method refined enough that the ingredient compounding was producing higher combined return values per batch than the first session had. The grade distribution had shifted upward. The low rolls were producing Rare results now where the first batch had produced Uncommon. The high rolls were producing Legendary results on three separate occasions, none of them as directly relevant as the Ashen Veil but all of them worth carrying.

He selected six for the fight.

The Ashen Veil. Fifteen minutes of complete signature erasure, Void attribute active.

The Thermal Ward. Full thermal damage nullification for eight minutes with Fire output boost from absorbed energy. He knew the effect would degrade against a creature at the Ashen Regent's level. He was taking it anyway because partial thermal nullification was still worth more than nothing.

Two Void Clarity Draughts. 40% perception enhancement on all active perception skills. Again, degraded against the tier gap but Pressure Sense at 40% enhanced range meant the difference between mapping the Regent's movement from 80 metres and mapping it from 112 metres, which was the difference between enough reaction time and not enough.

The Galeforce Surge. Wind output up 60%, movement speed up 30% during Wind skill use. Useful for the approach and the retreat if one became necessary.

One he had produced on day three that he had not shown in any prior batch summary because the roll had been 96.

[Fusion roll: 96]

[Post-multiplier value: 84,340,220 VP]

[Fusion complete.]

[Voidform Elixir — Mythical T2]

[Effect: Temporarily aligns the user's physical presence with the void attribute of their magic core. Duration: 10 minutes. While active, the user's physical strikes carry void penetration equivalent to the Voidforge Absolute's passive penetration rating multiplied by 3. All skill outputs carry an additional void saturation layer that bypasses the first defensive technique encountered per exchange.]

[Note: Effect degrades sharply against targets more than 2 tiers above the user. Partial void alignment maintained.]

He had read that note and done the arithmetic. The Ashen Regent at level 180 to 200 was Hardened tier at minimum, possibly Champion if he took into account the 12 champions it had killed. Two tiers above him was Hardened. If the Regent was Hardened the effect held. If it was Champion the effect degraded. He did not know which. He was taking it regardless because degraded void saturation that bypassed the first defensive technique per exchange was still the single most useful thing he had for a creature whose primary defence was probably the thermal null field.

He checked the full investment panel one last time.

[Ashveil Blade — Legendary]

[Unknown Egg (???) — Return value: 2,847,340,000 VP] [Current rate: ???]

[VP balance: 8,847,110]

He looked at the egg entry. 2.8 billion. He looked at the crack lines on the surface, the shell now more fracture than shell, the dark material holding together in progressively smaller sections. The breathing wave of the investment bar was slightly faster than it had been yesterday. Not dramatically. Just enough that he noticed.

He packed the six potions, picked up the Ashveil Blade and the egg and left the room.

Varn was in the common room. He looked up when Kael came down the stairs with the pack and the blade and the particular quality of someone who has made a decision and is no longer in the planning phase of it.

Varn looked at the eastern window. Then at Kael. "Today," he said.

"Yes," Kael said.

Varn was quiet for a moment. "The Ashen Regent killed a group of four Champion-tier cultivators three years ago. All at once." He set down his water. "They were not careless people."

"I know," Kael said.

Varn looked at him with the expression he had been wearing since the first conversation, the one that was somewhere between concerned and something that did not have a clean name. "Is there anything I can do," he said.

It was not a question Kael had expected. He looked at Varn for a moment. "If I am not back by nightfall," he said, "the guild should know the Regent's territory is approximately 200 metres in diameter, centred on the old rockfall formation in the interior. The creature moves in a circular pattern inside it. Pressure Sense reads it where Thermal Mapping cannot."

Varn looked at him. "That is intelligence nobody has had before."

"Now they have it," Kael said. "Whether or not I come back."

He went out the door and turned east.

The walk to the interior took forty minutes.

He used the time to run Pressure Sense at passive range and map the outer ring's morning activity, the familiar patrol territories playing out in air pressure signatures now as naturally as they had in heat signatures two weeks ago. The two perception systems ran simultaneously without interference, overlapping maps that gave him more information than either alone. Where Thermal Mapping showed heat output Pressure Sense showed mass and movement. Together they produced a picture of the environment that had no blind spots except the one ahead of him.

He consumed the Ashen Veil at the outer ring boundary.

The effect was immediate and total. His thermal signature disappeared from his own Thermal Mapping display, which he had not expected. His pressure signature in Pressure Sense dropped to a level that registered as ambient air rather than a body. Even the sound of his footsteps reduced to something that the Wind Veil passive was already managing but the Veil enhanced further, his movement through the undergrowth producing no more disturbance than a light breeze.

He consumed the Void Clarity Draught.

Pressure Sense range extended from 35 metres to 49 metres. Thermal Mapping range extended from 40 metres to 56 metres. The Ashen Regent's null zone was 200 metres in diameter, which meant the null zone boundary was 100 metres from the centre. At 49 metres of Pressure Sense range he would be inside the null zone before he could read the Regent's position.

He approached to 51 metres from the null zone boundary and stopped.

From there Pressure Sense could reach 49 metres into the null zone. The Regent's circular pattern had a radius of approximately 60 metres based on his earlier mapping. He waited for the pattern to bring the Regent to the near side of its circuit.

Four minutes.

The pressure signature arrived at the edge of his range. Enormous. The air displacement of something that massed at a scale that made the outer ring's largest creatures look modest. Moving slowly, the circular pattern continuing with the quality of something that had not changed its behaviour in years.

He consumed the Thermal Ward, the Galeforce Surge and the Voidform Elixir in sequence.

Then he stepped into the null zone.

Thermal Mapping went dark immediately. The Void Clarity Draught kept it technically active but the null zone was absolute inside the boundary and the enhancement had nothing to work with. He was operating on Pressure Sense alone and the Voidform Elixir's ten-minute clock.

He moved toward the Regent's pressure signature.

At 30 metres he could read it properly. The mass displacement was unlike anything he had encountered in this world. Not just large. Dense in a way that suggested the creature's body was operating at a physical density above what normal biological architecture produced. Its movement left pressure trails in the air that persisted for several seconds after it had passed, like footprints.

At 20 metres he activated Char Field, Void Mantle and Core Surge simultaneously.

The Core Surge doubled all active skill output for eight seconds. Char Field at doubled intensity produced a thermal field around him that the Thermal Ward was absorbing and redirecting into Fire output, the two effects feeding each other. Combustion SS at doubled output through the Void Mantle's penetration layer, boosted by the Thermal Ward's redirected absorption, boosted again by the Voidform Elixir's void saturation layer.

He aimed at the centre of the pressure signature and used Thermal Lance.

The beam held for three seconds at doubled Core Surge output and he directed it at the mass centre of the Regent's displacement signature, the Voidform Elixir's void saturation bypassing the first defensive technique the creature had and delivering the full thermal lance output into whatever was underneath it.

The null zone broke.

Not completely. But the section of it directly around the point of impact cracked in the way a surface cracked when struck from below, a radius of roughly 15 metres around the hit point where thermal data flooded back into Thermal Mapping and he got his first actual look at what the Ashen Regent was.

It was not what he had expected from the name.

The creature was roughly humanoid in basic silhouette, bipedal, but the similarity to anything humanoid ended at the shape. The surface of it was not hide or skin but ash, actual layered ash that was somehow structural, compacted into plates that moved with the body the way armour moved without being separate from it. The thermal data from the cracked section of the null zone showed the interior of those ash plates running at a temperature significantly below ambient, the null zone mechanic explained immediately, the Regent was not blocking thermal perception by projecting a null field, it was absorbing all ambient thermal energy within its territory into its own body, creating a genuine thermal vacuum that Thermal Mapping read as nothing because there was nothing to read.

It turned toward him.

The eyes were the only part of it that showed temperature, two points of heat in the centre of an ash face that registered on Thermal Mapping as the only warm things in the null zone, running at a temperature that did not correspond to anything biological he had seen.

It looked at him for approximately 20 milliseconds.

Then it moved.

The speed was wrong for something that size. He registered it through Pressure Sense before Thermal Mapping could update, the mass displacement of the Regent accelerating from the slow circular patrol pattern to something that crossed fifteen metres in a time he did not have a clean number for, and the first strike arrived with a force that the Void Mantle absorbed at 400% damage resistance and still moved him backward four full steps.

His HP dropped 340 points through the Void Mantle.

He did not stop moving. Deflection Current redirected the second strike, the force carrying past him, and Gust Strike fired at the moment of the directional change, the wind burst from the redirect impacting the Regent's ash plates at a point that the Pressure Sense showed as structurally thinner than the surrounding area.

The ash plates cracked at that point.

The Regent pulled back half a step. Not retreating. Reassessing.

Kael used Combustion SS, Penetrating Burn, directed at the cracked section. The void saturation layer from the Voidform Elixir hit first, the bypass mechanic stripping the Regent's immediate defensive response, and Penetrating Burn delivered its full output into the exposed interior.

The Regent made a sound. The first sound he had heard from it.

He had four minutes left on the Ashen Veil. Six minutes on the Voidform Elixir. Three minutes left on Core Surge was already gone, the eight seconds having expired during the first exchange.

He did not have enough to finish this today.

He took one more exchange, Thermal Lance into the cracked section while Deflection Current managed the Regent's counter, adding to the damage without committing to a position he could not exit cleanly, and then used Void Step.

Ten metres. Instantaneous. No thermal signature during transit.

He was at the null zone boundary before the Regent had finished processing where he had been.

He crossed back into the outer ring and ran.

Not in panic. Calculated retreat, using Slipstream at Galeforce Surge enhanced output, putting distance between himself and the null zone boundary before the Regent could close it. Pressure Sense showed him the Regent's signature at the null zone edge, stopped there. It was not pursuing beyond its territory.

He ran until the Pressure Sense showed the signature fading to the edge of range and then stopped against a rock formation and checked his HP.

[HP: 1,840/3,120]

1,280 HP in two full exchanges through Void Mantle at 400% damage resistance. He ran the calculation the other direction. Without Void Mantle active those same two exchanges would have produced 6,400 HP of damage against his base resistance. He had 3,120 HP maximum.

He would have died in the first exchange.

He sat with that for a moment.

Then he opened the investment panel and looked at Heat Control's return value.

[Heat Control (SSS) — Return value: 103,847,330 VP]

[Current rate: 4,724,110 VP per hour]

He had cracked the Regent's ash plates. He had gotten inside the null zone undetected using the Ashen Veil. He had found the structural weak point and confirmed it was accessible. He had done more damage to the Ashen Regent in one engagement than fourteen Champion-tier cultivators combined had apparently managed in six years.

He also needed significantly more before he could finish the fight.

He invested 2,000,000 VP into Heat Control, watched the bar extend and closed the panel.

He needed better potions. He needed the compounding to run longer on his current skills. He needed Combustion to reach SSS grade which the Compounding Lens was projecting in roughly eighteen days at current rates.

He stood up, checked the egg was undamaged in his pack, and started walking back to Irongate.

Varn was going to be at the inn.

He was going to have to explain why he was back before nightfall without waiting for the guild report he had prepared.

He found he did not mind that conversation either.
