Chapter 136 - Steady Presence 1

Sera knocked on the door, three gentle taps. She waited. No response came. The silence stretched for several seconds before she used the keycard, the lock clicking open with a soft electronic beep.

The room was dim, with the curtains drawn. Vessara lay in the center of the massive foster bed, her chestnut hair fanned across the pillow, and one arm draped over her face as if shielding herself from the world.

"Luna?" Sera's voice was barely above a whisper.

No response. Not even a shift in motion. Sera crossed the room, her footsteps silent on the plush carpet around the bed area. She reached the bedside and gently laid her hand on Vessara's shoulder.

"Luna," She called, applying the lightest pressure. 

Vessara stirred. A soft sound escaped her throat, something between a groan and a question. Her arm slid from her face, and her eyes blinked open, unfocused and heavy-lidded. She blinked again, squinting up at Sera through the dim light.
