The sole of her foot touched something fragile, and instantly a soft sound followed.
A faint crack… crunch… like something brittle whispering as it broke beneath her weight.
The fallen brown leaves, long dead and forgotten, folded and crumbled under each step. Fragments shifted and scattered, some clinging to her skin, others brushing away lightly with the movement of her feet. Thin twigs snapped with quiet, almost sharp sounds, slicing through the stillness between the trees.
Beneath the layer of leaves, the ground felt uneven.
Sometimes hard and dry.
Sometimes slightly damp.
A thin layer of dust lifted each time her foot rose again, drifting slowly before settling back down, pulled gently by gravity.
There was a rhythm to it.
Step… pause… step again.
Like footsteps that didn't know where they were going, only that they had to keep moving.
The sound of crushed leaves became the only music in the air. Not rushed, not slow either. Each step left behind a faint trace, split leaves, shifted twigs, slightly pressed soil.
And in the middle of it all… She walked.
Eleven.
The girl who saw everything last night.
The girl who had witnessed the monster bleed because of someone.
The girl who had lost her way.
Fear and survival were the only things pushing her forward now. Not toward a destination… but away from something.
Away from them.
Away from the men who hurt her.
The ones who made her afraid.
The ones who made her angry.
Then, through the gaps between the trees, something unfamiliar appeared. A house stood in the distance, quiet yet alive, with thin smoke rising from its chimney and curling softly into the sky.
A car was parked nearby, still and ordinary, and beside it stood a flag, its colors faintly visible even from where she was, blue, red, and white.
It's an American flag, she recognized it immediately that she had seen it before, had been told what it meant, her Papa's voice echoing faintly in her memory as she stared at it for a moment longer than necessary.
Her attention shifted when the door opened, and a man stepped out into the open. His figure was different from the men she knew in her place, rounder, less rigid, lacking the cold, controlled presence she had grown accustomed to.
He carried a black plastic bag in one hand. Eleven remained hidden behind the trees, her body still, her gaze fixed on him as she observed every movement with quiet caution.
And then she smelled it.
The scent came from the house, carried gently by the air, warm and unfamiliar yet strangely recognizable. It reached her slowly, wrapping around her senses and stirring something deep inside her chest.
Food…. Real food.
Not the controlled portions she was given, not something measured or observed, but something alive, something meant to be eaten freely.
After the man finished throwing away the black plastic bag, Eleven began to move, stepping out carefully from behind the trees as she approached the house. Her eyes briefly lingered on the trash bin where the man had placed the bag, but she ignored it, choosing instead to walk closer to the door with slow, cautious steps.
She reached the door and gently pushed it open, the hinge letting out a faint creak that sounded louder than it should in her ears. The sound made her pause for a brief moment, her body tensing slightly as she listened, ready to run at the slightest sign of danger. Then she heard it, a song, playing from somewhere deeper inside the house.
Eleven leaned forward just enough to peek through the opening before fully stepping in, her eyes scanning the space beyond the doorway, making sure the man wasn't standing there waiting. She had already prepared herself to run if he appeared, her body coiled with quiet readiness, but when she saw no one near the entrance, she slowly pushed the door further open and stepped inside.
The air felt different. Warmer than the woods or even the place where she belonged before.
She walked further in, her gaze drifting around the room where cans and bottles were displayed along the walls, forming a strange kind of decoration she didn't fully understand. The song continued to play somewhere ahead, guiding her steps as she moved deeper into the house, drawn toward the source of the sound.
When she reached the end of the room, she turned slightly and looked to the side, where a man sat within her line of sight. Not just one, she noticed another figure moving into a different room nearby. For a brief second, the instinct to run surged back into her chest, sharp and urgent, but it was quickly pushed down by something stronger.
Hunger.
"…Alright, one more," the man she had seen outside said, his voice carrying casually through the room.
Eleven took a few more careful steps forward, just enough to see more clearly. There were several people inside, their presence filling the space, yet what calmed her was not their number, but their unfamiliarity. None of them looked like the men she knew. None of them had the same cold faces, the same controlled expressions. There was nothing in them that she recognized, and for her, that alone was enough.
"Hey Ben, what do you think about that?" one of them said, his voice blending with the music and the low hum of conversation.
By then, Eleven had already made her decision. She didn't approach them. Instead, she quietly stepped away, moving toward another door nearby. Her hand pressed against the cold metal surface before she pushed it open, slipping into a different room altogether.
Inside, the atmosphere changed again.
Machines filled the space, unfamiliar shapes and sounds surrounding her, creating a low mechanical hum that echoed softly in the room. Eleven paused for a moment, looking around with quiet curiosity rather than fear. The machines here were nothing like the ones she knew. They weren't the ones connected to her head, weren't the ones covered in buttons with tiny, unreadable labels. These felt… different. Less suffocating.
Her eyes continued to wander until they found something else, something that immediately pulled her attention.
A small basket, wrapped in plastic, sitting on a surface nearby. And on top of it…
Food.
Eleven moved toward it slowly, her steps almost hesitant now, as if she couldn't fully believe what she was seeing. She stopped just in front of it, staring at the food for a few seconds before glancing around the room again, checking her surroundings. The people she had seen earlier weren't looking at her. No one was paying attention.
Carefully, she reached out and took one piece.
A potato.
She brought it closer and took a small bite first, cautious, testing it, her eyes flicking back toward the kitchen servery window where the others were. When no one reacted, when no one even seemed to notice, something inside her shifted.
Then she grabbed more.
A handful this time.
She began to eat faster, trying to take it all in, stuffing the fries into her tiny little mouth with growing urgency. It was messy and clumsy, her small mouth struggling to keep up with her hunger but she didn't stop. She couldn't. The taste, the warmth, the simple reality of it overwhelmed her senses.
'It was so good!'
She tried to eat everything at once, driven by a hunger that had been building since the night before, but only a few seconds later, the man she had seen earlier turned his head.
And looked straight at her while she was still eating.
"Hey!"
The shout came suddenly, sharp enough to startle her, and Eleven froze for a brief second, her body stiff as she turned toward the voice with wide, terrified eyes. "Come here!" Ben, the man Eleven saw, shouted again, his voice louder this time and more commanding.
That was enough, Eleven didn't wait a second more.
She grabbed the small basket instinctively and bolted, her bare feet moving as fast as they could across the floor. She hadn't even finished eating, and the desperate need to keep going, to keep the food, to keep eating pushed her forward without hesitation.
Behind her, Ben immediately gave chase, his footsteps heavy and fast as he ran after what he assumed was just another troublemaking kid stealing from him. It didn't take long for the difference in size and strength to close the gap between them. Just before Eleven could reach the door she had left open, a hand shot out and grabbed her.
"You think you can steal from me, boy?!" Ben snapped angrily, his grip firm as he pulled her back.
The sudden force caused the fries in Eleven's hands to fall, scattering across the floor as he spun her around to face him. Her expression was filled with fear, her breathing uneven, her body tense as if she might break free and run again at any moment. But Ben, still holding onto her, paused.
For the first time, he really looked at her.
Not a boy.
A girl?
The realization hit him immediately, and his expression shifted again, confusion replacing his anger. His eyes moved over her, taking in the oversized gown she was wearing, the dirt smeared across her face, the way her bare feet pressed against the ground, completely unprotected.
"What in the hell…" Ben muttered under his breath, his grip loosening slightly as he tried to make sense of what he was seeing.
"Who are you, kid?" he asked again, his voice no longer as harsh as before.
But Eleven didn't answer.
She didn't know how to answer that question.

Across town, Hopper sat inside his Hawkins police jeep, his gaze fixed on the garage shop across the street. He glanced down briefly at the address he had written earlier, confirming once more that this was the place Claudia had mentioned. When he looked back up, his eyes narrowed slightly as he observed the scene in front of him.
The men working there didn't exactly give off a welcoming impression.
One of them, covered in tattoos and wearing nothing but an undershirt, stood near the front, while the others moved around with the kind of rough, unfiltered energy that made the entire place feel less like a business and more like something… unofficial. It wasn't the biggest garage in town, but there was something about it that made Hopper pause, scratching his forehead as a thought crossed his mind.
"…Animal attack… or some kind of gang trouble?" he muttered quietly to himself.
A monster wasn't even part of the equation in his mind.
With a quiet exhale, Hopper pushed the door open and stepped out of the jeep. His eyes never left the garage as he walked toward it, and almost immediately, the men inside noticed him. One by one, they slowed down, then stopped entirely, their attention shifting toward the approaching officer.
Among them, one man stood out.
Older.
Still built solid, his presence carrying a natural authority as he straightened up and stepped forward, positioning himself in front of the others. Hopper didn't stop. He had faced worse than this before, and whatever tension hung in the air didn't seem to bother him as he closed the distance between them.
"What do you want, officer?" the older man asked, his voice calm but firm.
Hopper let his gaze pass over each of them briefly before settling back on the man in front. "My name is Jim Hopper," he said evenly, extending his hand as a clear sign that he wasn't here looking for trouble. "Chief of Police, Hawkins."
The man studied him for a second before reaching out and shaking his hand, his grip strong, deliberate to show him. "Name's Keith," he replied, giving a short nod.
"Alright… uh," Hopper continued, pulling his hand back as he got straight to the point. "Is Christopher Henderson working here?"
The moment the name left his mouth, something shifted.
"What's wrong with Chris?" Keith asked, his tone lowering, his eyes sharpening again as he looked at Hopper.
Hopper caught that immediately.
The familiarity and the concern from him.
"He's had an accident," Hopper said, his voice steady as his eyes moved across the group, watching closely for any reaction.
And then he saw it.
The change.
Their expressions tightened, eyes widening, the weight of the words sinking in almost instantly. Even Keith couldn't hide it.
"What do you mean, Chief?" Keith asked again, but this time his voice carried more than just curiosity.
It was heavier and more tense, like he was already bracing for something bad. Hopper just wanted no misunderstanding here.
