The first punch landed before Kain even saw who threw it.
His head snapped to the side, vision flashing white for a split second as his body staggered back. The alley was already loud, voices overlapping, boots scraping against cracked concrete, the sharp tension of men who had come here knowing someone might not leave.
Kain steadied himself, tongue running across the inside of his cheek. Blood. He spat to the side and lifted his head.
"Thought you'd come alone," one of them said, stepping forward. A grin stretched across his face, thin and ugly.
Kain cracked his neck, rolling his shoulders as if this was just another night. "You talk too much."
That was all it took, then everything collapsed into motion. A swing from the left. He ducked. Someone rushed him from behind, he turned, elbow driving into a ribcage, he felt something give under the impact. A shout. Another body slammed into him. Hands grabbed, pulled, shoved.
This wasn't a clean fight. This line of work never was anyway. It was chaos, such was survival.
Kain moved like he had done this a hundred times before because he had. His fists found faces, his knees drove into stomachs, his breath steady even as bodies closed in around him.
Then something changed.
A presence slipped into his blind spot. Too close, to fast and too quiet. He turned just as the blade drove in. It slid into his side with sickening ease, like his body had simply opened to accept it. There was no dramatic pain at first, just pressure.
Then the man pulled it out, and everything followed. Warmth spread across his side. His legs buckled, strength drained out of him as if the ground itself had reached up and taken it.
He hit the pavement hard.
The fight didn't stop immediately, but it faded from him. Voices became distant, muffled. Someone swore. Another laughed, though it sounded strained now.
"Let's go," a voice said. "We're done here."
Footsteps retreated.
None of them even checked if he was dead.
Kain lay there, staring up at the narrow slice of sky between the buildings. His hand pressed against his side, fingers slipping against something wet. When he pulled it away, even in the dim light, he could see it.
Too much blood.
His breathing grew shallow. Each inhale felt like it stopped halfway, like his body no longer remembered what to do with air.
A weak chuckle escaped him, dry and broken.
"So this is how it ends…"
His voice sounded strange to his own ears.
He had always imagined something louder. Something meaningful. Not this quiet alley, not this empty sky.
His chest rose again, slower this time. He closed his eyes for a moment, then opened them again.
"I wasn't… good," he muttered.
The words came out uneven, dragged through fading strength.
"I know that."
Faces flickered in his mind. People he had hurt, people he had stood beside, deals made, fights won and fights lost.
"I did things I shouldn't have…"
His throat tightened, breath catching as a sharp wave of pain finally hit him.
"But… I tried."
His fingers curled weakly against the ground.
"I tried to help… sometimes."
It sounded pathetic when he said it out loud.
Still, he kept going.
"If that counts for anything… then…"
His voice faltered.
For a moment, there was only the sound of his breathing, uneven and starting to fade.
"…help me."
But silence answered him, the sky didn't change and the world didn't pause like in the script of those novels he had read. His vision began to dim at the edges, darkness creeping inward.
He swallowed, forcing one last breath.
"God… or anyone…"
The words barely formed now.
"…please…"
His chest rose once more, then fell and darkness took him.
—
It didn't end.
That was the first thing he noticed. There was no fading into nothing, there was no peaceful silence. No release.
Instead, there was pressure.
Tight suffocating pressure. Kain's awareness returned slowly, like he was being dragged upward through thick water. His body felt... feebly small, weaker. Yet present.
He could feel, that was the problem. Something pressed against him from all sides. It wasn't hard, but it wasn't soft either. It gave slightly under his movement, then pushed back.
It was warm, uncomfortably so. His chest tightened as instinct kicked in. He tried to inhale, but the air felt thin, stale.
Panic stirred. His limbs moved, sluggish at first. He pushed outward but nothing.
The space held him in place. His movements grew sharper and more desperate.
He kicked, and finally a dull crack answered him.
He froze. Then kicked again. Another crack, louder this time, the light pierced through the darkness, thin and blinding. Kain recoiled instinctively, but there was nowhere to go.
The cracks spread, lines of brightness cutting through the suffocating space. The structure around him began to give way, splitting under the force of his movements.
Then it broke and the world rushed in all at once. Light flooded his vision, so intense it burned. Air hit his skin, harsh and arid. His body slipped forward, carried by a strange, slick sensation as if something had pushed him out.
He hit the ground, and for a moment, he lay there, blinking against the overwhelming brightness. His eyes watered, vision blurred.
Heat pressed down on him from above, and slowly, he forced himself up. His limbs trembled, unsteady, but they responded. He rose onto shaking legs, squinting against the light until his vision began to adjust.
The first thing he saw was the sky.
It was bot the sky he knew. It was too bright, too empty. A burning red sun hung overhead, glaring down on a land that stretched endlessly in every direction.
It lacked tress, or buildings. Just cracked earth and dust. Then he looked down. The thing behind him…
It was an egg.
Leathery. Torn open no doubt where he had broken through. Its surface looked dry, almost brittle, yet thick enough to have held him.
A realization settled in his mind. He turned, more eggs. Dozens, no hundreds. They littered the barren ground, scattered across the wasteland. And as he watched, they began to crack.
One after another.
Shapes spilled out of them, small and twisted. Creatures with thin limbs, rough skin, and sharp, some with uneven features.
Demons.
The word came to him without explanation.
When they came out, they moved immediately without any hesitation, as if on instinct.
One lunged at another, teeth sinking into flesh. A shrill screech tore through the air as the second creature fought back, claws raking across its attacker.
Then more joined.
It spread like fire.
Everywhere he looked, the creatures were attacking each other. Biting clawing, tearing.
There was no thought behind it.
Only instinct.
Kain stood frozen, watching the madness unfold.
Then something hit him. A sharp, burning pain exploded across his shoulder.
"Ah!"
He staggered, twisting as a small demon clung to him, its teeth buried deep into his flesh.
Black blood oozed from the wound. The sight barely registered before instinct took over. He grabbed the creature and shoved it away with force. It tumbled across the ground but recovered instantly, letting out a high, grating screech.
"Nyaaa!"
It lunged again.
Kain stumbled back, heart pounding. His eyes darted around, searching.
There.
A dry stick lay half-buried in the dust. He grabbed it without thinking.
The demon was already on him. He swung the stick and it connected with its head with a dull crack. The creature dropped, twitching.
Kain didn't stop. He grabbed a stone nearby and brought it down.
Once. Twice. Again. Again and again
The squirming slowed, then stopped. His breath came fast, chest heaving as he stared down at the motionless body.
Something stirred within it. A faint glow. From the demon's chest, a small mote of light rose, hovering in the air.
Kain stared at it as everything went silent.
The screeching, the fighting, the chaos.
Had stopped, he turned slowly. Every demon had stopped, and all of them were staring at the mote.
Hunger filled their eyes. Before he could react, they moved. They lunged as one, crashing into him, knocking him aside as they fought over the glowing light. Claws tore into flesh, teeth ripped through limbs, black blood sprayed across the dry ground.
The struggle ended quickly, and one demon stood above the rest, its body trembling as it grabbed the mote and consumed it.
Its form changed almost instantly. It grew taller, its body stretching upward. Small claws pushed out from its fingers, sharp and crude.
Kain watched, his thoughts coverged then he moved. A wounded demon lay nearby, barely twitching.
He grabbed a rock, brought it down once and the body went still. A mote rose. This time, without hesitation he grabbed it and consumed it.
Warmth flooded his body. A deep, overwhelming sense of satisfaction spread through him, washing away the pain, the fear, and the confusion.
His skin tightened. Hardened into feint scales thats formed across his arms. His fingers twitched and claws. Short, but sharp grew out.
A smile spread across his face.
It felt… right.
He moved again, another demon, another strike one more mote. Each one fed the same sensation, the same rush of energy.
Time blurred, he lost count of how many he killed. Only that he kept going. After about the tenth mote, the change came again.
His body grew taller, and more solid. His claws extended further, now reaching nearly half the length of his pinky.
He lifted his hand, staring at them. Then his gaze shifted. The other demon. It had been watching him and mimicking him.
Kain moved first. He lunged, closing the distance in a flash. His claws sliced forward, catching the creature before it could react. It screeched, striking back.
They clashed.
Claws tore through scales. Flesh split. Black blood dripped onto the ground.
The demon fought wildly, refusing to back down. But Kain was stronger, faster and had strategy on his side.
He drove it back, then forward, then down. His claws sank in deep and it's body went still.
From its chest, a larger mote emerged, which was twice the size of the others. Kain consumed it, and energy surged through him, much stronger than before.
It spread through every part of his body, burning and building at the same time.
Then something appeared which he found familiar from the various literature from his previous life.
