## Chapter 20: The Vault of Suns
The strategy table on The Indomitable was a flickering projection of ancient light and stardust. Commander Vane stood at the head, her cybernetic eye whirring as it projected a 3D map of the Aurelian Treasury—a massive, orbital fortress suspended in the heart of a dying star.
"The Vault of Suns," Vane rasped, her metal finger tapping the center of the star. "It's not just a bank. It's where the Star-born store the 'Sol-Cores'—distilled essences of collapsed suns. One of those could power your ship for a millennium. But it's protected by a 'Solar-Flare' shield. Anything that gets close is vaporized instantly."
Drake leaned over the table, his Smith's Insight dissecting the golden geometry of the fortress. "The shield isn't solid. It pulses at a frequency of 1.2 microseconds every time the star flares. If we can time our entry with the pulse, we can slip through."
"Slip through?" Barnaby squeaked from the corner, clutching a wrench like a holy relic. "Captain, that's like trying to run through a rainstorm without getting wet. One microsecond off, and we're toast!"
"We won't be off," Drake said, his golden eyes locking onto the Sol-Core's signature. "Because we aren't going in with a fleet. We're going in with a needle."

[Objective: Infiltrate the Vault, Steal the Sol-Core, and Sabotage the General's Treasury.]
[Potential Reward: Tier-4 Engine Upgrade & 'Sun-Shatter' Weaponry.]
## The Infiltration: The Needle and the Thread
The 'Needle' was a specialized stealth-pod forged by Drake using Legion-Tech. It was a jagged, black shard of obsidian-glass, infused with Drake's 'Hush-Fall' ability and coated in a layer of 'Crystalline Ichor' they had scavenged from the Living Ship. It had no engines; it relied on the gravitational pull of the star to slingshot itself toward the Vault.
Inside the cramped cockpit, Drake and a specialist from the Legion named Mira sat shoulder-to-shoulder. Mira was a 'Shadow-Walker'—a mutant whose skin could mimic any texture or temperature.
"Ten seconds to the flare," Mira whispered, her hand on the manual release.
Drake closed his eyes. He didn't look at the sensors; he felt the vibration of the star through the hull. The heat was already rising, the obsidian-glass glowing a dull, angry red.
Five... four... three...
The star erupted. A massive wave of white fire washed over the sector.
"Now!" Drake roared.
The pod shot forward, caught in the vacuum created by the flare. For a split second, the Solar-Flare shield flickered. The Needle pierced the barrier, the heat so intense that Drake's celestial scars began to glow spontaneously.
They hit the Vault's docking bay with a silent thud, the 'Hush-Fall' field absorbing the impact.
## Inside the Treasury: Gold and Ghost-Light
The interior of the Vault was a cathedral of blinding light. Every surface was made of polished gold and white marble, designed to reflect the sun's glory. But beneath the beauty was a lethal security system. Hundreds of 'Light-Sentinels'—automaton soldiers made of solidified photons—patrolled the corridors.
"We have twelve minutes before the next flare cycle resets the internal sensors," Mira said, her body already beginning to shimmer and fade into the background.
Drake drew the Raven-Blade. He didn't activate its light; he kept it in 'Void-Mode'. The blade looked like a tear in reality against the golden walls.
They moved through the 'Hall of Records', bypassing vaults filled with billions of credits and rare ores. Drake didn't care about the money. He was a Smith; he wanted the power.
They reached the 'Inner Sanctum'. In the center of the room, suspended in a magnetic field of pure starlight, was the Sol-Core. It was a sphere of liquid gold, swirling with an intensity that threatened to blind anyone who looked directly at it.
[Warning: Solar Radiation at 800% Safe Levels. Smithing gloves required for handling.]
"Wait," Mira hissed, grabbing Drake's arm. "The floor is a 'Weight-Sensor' grid. One gram of difference and the Sentinels will materialize inside our lungs."
Drake activated his 'Smith's Insight'. He saw the grid—a complex pattern of pressure-sensitive light-threads. He couldn't step on them.
"I don't need to step," Drake said.
He used his 'Void-hand' to create a localized gravitational well. He didn't pull himself toward the Core; he pulled the gravity away from the floor. He began to hover, a few inches above the sensors.
He reached out, his fingers inches from the Sol-Core.
Suddenly, a voice boomed from the shadows.
"A thief in my house. How... predictable."
From the golden pillars stepped the Harvester-General's Shadow—not the General himself, but a 'Void-Construct' made of the General's own dark energy. It was a tall, faceless figure draped in a cloak of shifting stars.
"You think you can steal the sun, Devourer?" the Shadow whispered. "The sun belongs to those who can endure its burn."
The Shadow raised a hand, and the room's golden walls began to melt, turning into liquid fire.
## The Battle in the Sun
The Light-Sentinels materialized, their spears made of white-hot plasma.
"Mira! Get the Core!" Drake shouted, throwing her his specialized containment-flask. "I'll hold the Shadow!"
Drake charged. The Raven-Blade clashed with the Shadow's scythe of dark-matter. The impact didn't make a sound—it made a 'null-zone' of absolute silence.
[Void Saturation: 32%. The Hunger is screaming.]
Drake felt the heat of the star pressing in from all sides. He was trapped between the white fire of the Vault and the black fire of the Shadow. He realized he couldn't win by fighting normally.
He opened his mouth and inhaled.
He didn't just breathe; he used 'Ultimate Devour'. He began to eat the liquid fire melting from the walls. He ate the plasma from the Sentinels' spears.
[Saturation Overload! 85%... 92%... 98%...]
Drake's body began to crack. Golden light poured out of his eyes, his mouth, his pores. He looked like a god of destruction.
With a roar that shook the entire orbital station, Drake released a 'Solar-Nova'—a massive blast of all the energy he had just consumed.
The Shadow vanished, its form shredded by the very light it tried to protect. The Light-Sentinels were vaporized instantly.
## The Escape: Falling Through Fire
"I have it!" Mira screamed, clutching the glowing flask.
The station was falling apart. The 'Solar-Nova' had destabilized the Vault's orbit. They were falling into the star.
"Back to the pod!" Drake grabbed Mira and used a 'Photonic Warp', bypassing three corridors in a single jump.
They slammed into the Needle just as the docking bay exploded.
"Drake, the shield is back up!" Mira shouted as they hurtled toward the Solar-Flare barrier. "We don't have a flare to hide in this time!"
Drake looked at the Sol-Core in the flask. He reached out and touched it with his bare Void-hand.
"I don't need to hide," Drake growled. "I'm the one who burns."
He funneled the Sol-Core's energy directly into the pod's hull. The Needle turned into a streak of white fire, punching a hole straight through the Solar-Flare shield and into the cold darkness of the Abyss beyond.
