Chapter 4 - WHEN PATHS CROSS AGAIN

Maya didn't expect to see him again.

Not like this.

Not on an ordinary day, in an ordinary place, as if nothing had changed.

And yet—

There he was.

Standing at the entrance of the library, the same place where everything had once begun.

"You're still here," Daniel said, a small smile forming on his lips.

Maya blinked, trying to process the moment.

"I could say the same thing," she replied, her voice quieter than she intended.

For a second, neither of them moved.

It felt like time had folded in on itself—like the months apart had never really happened.

But they had.

And both of them could feel it.

Daniel stepped closer.

Not too fast.

Not too slow.

Like he was afraid the moment might disappear if he moved the wrong way.

"I didn't know if you'd still come here," he admitted.

Maya glanced around the library—the rows of books, the quiet corners, the soft hum of pages turning.

"This place hasn't changed much," she said. "It felt… easier to stay."

Daniel nodded slightly.

"I get that."

There was a pause.

Not awkward.

Just filled with everything they hadn't said in months.

"When did you get back?" Maya asked, breaking the silence.

"This morning."

"And you came here first?"

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"Yeah."

Her heart skipped.

She tried to hide it.

Didn't succeed.

"I thought you weren't coming back," she said.

"I wasn't sure if I could," he replied honestly.

"Then why are you here now?"

Daniel exhaled softly, like the answer carried more weight than he wanted it to.

"Because leaving things the way they were… didn't feel right."

Maya looked at him, searching his expression.

"And now?"

"Now I don't want to leave things unfinished."

The word lingered.

Unfinished.

Like their story hadn't ended—just paused somewhere in between.

"Things changed," Maya said quietly.

"I know."

"You stopped calling."

Daniel's expression tightened slightly, just enough for her to notice.

"I didn't want to give you something I couldn't keep."

Maya frowned. "What does that mean?"

"It means…" He hesitated. "My life isn't simple, Maya. There are expectations I can't ignore."

"Because you're royalty," she said.

"Yes."

Silence settled between them again.

But this time, it wasn't distant.

It was honest.

"So where does that leave us?" Maya asked.

Daniel met her eyes.

"That's what I'm trying to figure out."

She crossed her arms slightly, not out of anger—but out of instinct.

Protection.

"You don't just get to come back and act like nothing happened."

"I'm not," he said quickly. "I know I hurt you."

Maya looked away, her gaze falling to the floor.

"You did."

The words were simple.

But they carried months of quiet pain behind them.

"I'm sorry," Daniel said, his voice softer now. "I thought… keeping my distance would make things easier."

"It didn't."

"I know that now."

Maya took a slow breath, steadying herself.

"I tried to move on," she admitted.

"Did it work?" he asked quietly.

She shook her head.

"No."

Something in Daniel's expression shifted.

Relief.

Hope.

Something he hadn't let himself feel in a long time.

"Then maybe…" he started.

Maya looked at him.

"Maybe what?"

"Maybe this isn't over."

Her heart tightened again.

Not in pain this time.

In possibility.

"Daniel…"

"I'm not asking for things to go back to how they were," he said quickly. "I just… want another chance."

She hesitated.

Not because she didn't want to say yes.

But because she remembered how it felt when he left.

"What happens when you leave again?" she asked.

"Then I come back."

"You can't promise that."

"I can try."

Maya let out a small, almost frustrated laugh.

"You always say things like that."

"Because they're true."

She studied him for a moment.

Really studied him.

He looked the same.

But something about him had changed.

He seemed more certain.

More aware of what he could lose.

"Okay," she said finally.

Daniel blinked. "Okay?"

"One chance," she clarified. "But no disappearing."

"I won't," he said immediately.

"Daniel."

"I mean it."

She held his gaze for a moment longer.

Then nodded.

"Okay."

For the first time since he arrived—

The tension eased.

Just a little.

"Come on," Maya said, picking up her bag.

"Where are we going?" he asked.

"Outside."

They stepped out of the library together.

The sky was overcast, the air cool, carrying that familiar feeling of rain waiting to fall.

It felt like before.

But not quite.

"Still the same weather," Daniel said.

"Yeah," Maya replied. "Some things don't change."

They walked side by side.

Not too close.

Not too far.

Just enough.

"So… what's it like?" Maya asked after a while.

"What?"

"Your world."

Daniel let out a quiet breath.

"Busy. Controlled. Predictable."

"Sounds exhausting."

"It is."

She smiled slightly.

"And here?"

He glanced at her.

"Better."

Maya looked away quickly, pretending to focus on the path ahead.

But her smile lingered.

Over the next few days, things slowly began to settle.

Not perfectly.

Not instantly.

But steadily.

They started spending time together again.

Short conversations at first.

Then longer ones.

Walks after school.

Moments in the library.

It wasn't like before.

It was more careful.

More intentional.

But somehow—

It felt deeper.

One afternoon, they found themselves back under the tree behind the school.

Maya leaned against the trunk, looking up at the leaves swaying gently above.

"I forgot how quiet it is here," she said.

Daniel sat beside her.

"I didn't."

A comfortable silence settled between them.

The kind that didn't need words.

"You're leaving again, aren't you?" Maya said suddenly.

Daniel stiffened slightly.

"…Yeah."

"When?"

"A few weeks."

Her chest tightened—but she didn't let it show.

"Of course."

"I don't want to go," he said.

"But you will."

"I have to."

Maya nodded slowly.

"I figured."

"But this time is different," he added.

"How?"

"I'm not leaving you behind."

She frowned slightly.

"What does that mean?"

"It means I'm not disappearing again," he said. "We'll stay in touch. Properly."

Maya studied him carefully.

"You promise?"

"Yes."

She held his gaze.

Then nodded.

"Okay."

But deep down—

A small part of her still worried.

Because promises were easy to make.

Harder to keep.

And as the wind moved softly through the trees—

Maya couldn't shake the feeling that this wasn't the end of their struggle.

That something bigger was coming.

Something that would test them in ways they weren't ready for.

And this time—

It wouldn't just be distance standing in their way.

It would be everything.
