Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Brown's Bookstore

Silas was a man defined by striking, masculine features—dark hair framing his face, thick dark eyebrows, and deep brown eyes shaded by long lashes that carried a quiet, thoughtful depth. A straight, proportionate nose gave way to a mouth usually set in a calm, contemplative line, anchored by a strong jaw. Beneath his casual shirt, his wide shoulders tapered down to a narrow waist; every movement sent ripples across his back, and his denim trousers strained against his broad, muscular thighs. Tall and powerfully built, Silas the late-twenties perused the shelves of Brown's Bookstore, casually searching for something to catch his interest. Finding a book, he carried it to the counter. The sales representative carefully packaged it, handed it over, and Silas turned to head for the exit.

That was when Elsa collided directly into his chest.

She had shoulder-length brown hair that framed her face and curled at the tips, expressive light honey-brown eyes, long lashes, and soft, naturally shaped eyebrows. Her nose was straight and soft, her lips medium and pretty, and her high cheekbones gave definition to her face. She had a slender figure with a full bust and curves, dressed in a casual shirt and jeans. The impact was sudden as she bumped her head right into his chest. Luckily, the bag he was holding didn't drop.

"I'm sorry," she said, holding her forehead. Her honey-toned eyes were genuinely apologetic, and Silas didn't miss the sincerity in her expression. But before he could speak, Elsa turned and hurried away.

Anxiety pulsed through her. She was already late for work, and the last thing she needed was the counter clerk catching her clumsily running into customers. She reassured herself that it was an obvious accident, but there was no time to dwell on the attractive stranger—she just hoped he understood. Slipping into the back changing room, Elsa quickly threw on her uniform shirt. Checking her old, worn brown wristwatch, she winced. She'd walked into the shop two minutes late; now it was three.

Silas walked away from the shop toward his car, her light honey-brown eyes and frame capturing his attention for a moment.

Later one evening, Silas relaxed on the couch in his lavish yet inviting living room. He sat with his legs crossed, sipping a glass of fresh orange juice while opening the book he'd bought. Though his private library upstairs was fully stocked, recent boredom had pushed him to try something new. His fingers methodically flipped through the pages as he immersed himself in the story.

The sharp ring of his phone broke the silence. Checking the caller ID, he picked up. It was Roman.

"What's up, Silas?" Roman's voice came through, lively as always. Roman was a tall, broad-shouldered man in his thirties with sharp black hair and playful yet sly eyes that could shift between serious and mischievous. He was sitting on a barstool in his own house with a drink in front of him.

"Good. And you?" Silas replied.

"Good as well," Roman said.

Silas didn't respond immediately, resting the book on his lap and taking a sip of his juice.

"I was wondering if we could hang out like old times," Roman continued. "It's been a while since we've spent time hanging out."

"I'd love that," Silas said. He genuinely liked the idea, as he always enjoyed hanging out with Roman.

"On Thursday at Rosa's Club," Roman said casually, his eyes twinkling with mirth. Being a naturally social man, he loved going out.

"Sure, I'll arrive in the late afternoon," Silas said, placing the book down on the couch.

"See you then, I'll be expecting you," Roman said.

"Okay, I'll be hanging up," Silas said.

"Yeah, sure," Roman replied, happy that his friend was coming out to have a little fun.

Roman smirked as the line went dead, setting his phone on the counter and taking a slow sip of his drink, satisfied that he'd successfully coaxed his friend out of isolation. Back on the couch, Silas took another drink from his glass, picked up his book, and lost himself in the pages once more.

Hours drifted by. When he finally finished reading, Silas stood up and headed upstairs to his home office to tidy up some paperwork. It was a lingering habit he couldn't quite shake, but he didn't mind—he enjoyed staying productive.

A few days later, Elsa stood near her bedroom door, struggling to jam her foot into a shoe that was rapidly becoming too tight. She grumbled under her breath, wondering if her feet had grown or if the shoes had simply shrunk. Slinging the strap of her long leather bag over her shoulder, she stepped out into the common area.

At the kitchen counter sat her friend, Lucy.

Lucy was a striking woman of average height—just an inch shorter than Elsa—with ebony black hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail that framed her oval face. Her emerald eyes were vivid and captivating, bordered by thick, groomed brows, a neat nose, and small, beautifully shaped lips. When she smiled, her high cheekbones caught the ambient light perfectly. Right now, her bright green eyes were locked onto a word puzzle book, a pencil balanced in her hand. Beside her on the counter sat a freshly toasted ham-and-cheese sandwich and a steaming cup of tea.

Elsa walked over, the rich, savory scent of melted cheese hitting her nose instantly. Her stomach rumbled.

"What are you cooking?" Elsa asked, her eyes darting straight to the plate. Without waiting, she picked up the toasted ham and cheese bread and took a bite. A satisfied, hungry look washed over her face, and Lucy smiled, happy to see her friend enjoying the food.
