"Wait, you saw it?" I ask more keenly. This could be a lot more dangerous than I'm thinking. If the person came in a car, then it makes no sense that he was being chased and in a hurry that he had to hide the money there.
If that had been the case, he would have carelessly dropped it by the large cactus flowerpots in the lawn. Why would he or she go through the trouble of jamming it inside a mailbox?
"Who just leaves this kind of cash with no note?" He pushes it away.
"This isn't good at all. We should call the police."
"What?" Mom says. "No! If we call the police they will take it and we will never—"
"You're saying that we should keep it? That is theft," Dad says. "Or worse. You said you saw a black car watching the house? For how long?"
"I don't know. It's not there now. But it seems to have been all through the night since Lillian saw it too."
