Chapter 44 - Soft Devotion in the Office

The afternoon sun slanted through the tall office windows, gilding the edges of stacked papers, leather-bound folders, and the faint dust motes dancing in the air. It was a quiet, orderly space—usually filled with the steady hum of work, the scratch of pens, and the soft click of keyboards. But today, a gentle, unspoken warmth lingered beneath the routine, for here, amidst the duties and deadlines, the Dean could not keep his distance from Irina.

He sat at his large mahogany desk, but his attention was never truly on the reports spread before him. Instead, his eyes followed Irina's every movement as she moved efficiently around the room—filing documents, sorting correspondence, answering emails with quick, capable fingers. Whenever she passed close by his chair, he would reach out, his hand drifting to rest lightly at her waist or brush against her arm, slow and lingering, as if even the briefest separation felt too long to bear.

"You move too fast, my love," he murmured, his voice low enough that only she could hear, catching her hand as she turned away. He laced his fingers through hers, holding her securely for a moment, his thumb stroking the back of her palm in that familiar, tender rhythm. "There is time enough for everything. Come here… let me look at you."

When she leaned down to show him a paper he had requested, he rested his chin on her shoulder, his body pressing gently against her back, his breath warm against her neck. He didn't just read the document—he took his time, his other hand sliding slowly up her side to rest over her heart, feeling its steady beat beneath her blouse. He'd ask soft questions about the work, but his gaze was fixed on her profile, tracing the line of her jaw, the curve of her lips, as if memorizing every detail all over again.

"Everything you do is beautiful," he whispered against her ear, making her pause with her pen hovering over a form. "Even when you're sorting files or checking schedules… you make this ordinary room feel like a sanctuary."

At intervals, he would pull her lightly onto the edge of his desk, just for a moment, when no one else was near. He would stand between her knees, his hands resting firmly on her hips, leaning in to kiss her forehead or the tip of her nose, slow and sweet. He'd tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear, his touch reverent and possessive all at once.

"You belong right here," he would say softly, tapping the space over his heart, then his desk, then the office around them. "Everywhere I am is where you should be. I can't focus properly when you're across the room… it's as if half my world is missing."

When she returned to her own desk to finish a task, he would watch her intently, occasionally calling her over for the smallest of reasons—just to hand her a pen, to ask her opinion on something trivial, or simply to feel close again. Once she was beside him, his arm would circle her waist or rest along the back of her chair, anchoring her to him, unbothered by the work still waiting.

He loved these quiet hours: the way the light caught her features, the sound of her voice when she explained something, the warmth of her presence beside him. Even as he signed papers and gave instructions, his attention always circled back to her—glancing over with soft eyes, brushing his leg against hers under the desk, or squeezing her hand when he thought she might be tired.

"Let me help you," he offered more than once, even when she was perfectly capable, just so he could stand close behind her, guiding her hands over a ledger or wrapping his arms loosely around her waist while they looked at the computer screen together. "You work too hard, Irina. Let me carry some of it… let me take care of you, here and always."

As the afternoon wore on, the office remained a place of duty and order—but beneath it ran this steady, sweet current of his devotion. He was her Dean in title and responsibility, but in every quiet touch, every lingering look, every word meant only for her, he was entirely hers—clingy, tender, and utterly unwilling to let even work keep them apart for long.

"Soon the day will end," he told her softly, kissing her hand again before returning to his own papers, though his eyes never strayed far. "But until then… stay close. Never far from me. Not even here."

Minutes blurred into hours, the afternoon sun shifting westward and casting longer, warmer streaks across the polished wooden floors, yet the Dean's focus remained stubbornly split between his administrative duties and the woman moving so effortlessly through the space beside him. Every time Irina turned back to her desk or stepped toward the filing cabinets, his gaze drifted after her like a tethered thread—unbreakable, gentle, and constantly pulling her back.

He tried to bury himself in faculty reports and budget summaries, pen hovering over the page, but his attention kept snagging on small things: the way her blouse fit perfectly across her shoulders, the soft sound of her pen scratching across paper, the faint scent of her perfume—jasmine and something warm—that lingered in the air whenever she passed. Before long, he'd set his pen down with a quiet sigh, push his chair back slightly, and reach out for her again, as if being more than an arm's length away was a kind of quiet torment he could not endure.

When she returned carrying a stack of sorted documents, he didn't just take them from her hands—he caught her wrist first, his fingers wrapping loosely but possessively around her forearm, guiding her until she stood right between his knees as he sat behind the desk. "Stay here while I review these," he murmured, placing the files aside for a moment to slide both hands to her waist, pulling her closer until the fabric of her skirt brushed his legs. "It's too quiet when you're over there. I need to feel you close enough to touch."

Irina laughed softly, a gentle sound that warmed the room more than the sunlight, but she didn't pull away. Instead, she rested one hand on his shoulder, glancing down at the papers he'd barely started. "You'll never finish the reports if you keep distracting me—and yourself," she teased lightly. But he only leaned his head against her side, closing his eyes as he breathed in her familiar scent, his hands splaying wide across her back to hold her securely.

"Let them wait," he whispered, pressing a lingering kiss just above her hip, slow and deliberate. "Nothing matters as much as this—having you here, knowing you're mine even in the middle of all this work." He looked up then, his eyes dark and bright with affection, reaching up to brush a strand of hair behind her ear, his thumb lingering on her cheekbone. "You're the only clarity I have in this office, Irina. Everything else is just numbers and rules. You… you are everything."

When she insisted he get back to work, he compromised by pulling her chair right beside his desk, so close their knees brushed constantly under the wood. He kept one hand on her thigh beneath the table, his palm warm and heavy, stroking slow, rhythmic patterns that had nothing to do with efficiency and everything to do with claiming and comforting. Every few paragraphs he read, he would turn his head to press a kiss to her temple, or her jaw, or the curve of her shoulder—brief touches that felt like promises, reminders that even amidst deadlines and duties, their connection was the most important thing in the room.

Once, when the phone rang and she moved to answer it on the other side of the office, he actually frowned, setting his pen down with exaggerated reluctance. Before she could finish the call, he stood and followed her, leaning against the wall right beside her, his arm brushing hers the entire time. When she hung up, he immediately wrapped both arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder, swaying them gently back and forth as if they had all the time in the world.

"See how hard it is?" he murmured against her neck, his voice playful but laced with real longing. "I can't even stand a few steps away. I'm afraid if I let you go completely, I'll wake up and find this was only a dream—that you never walked into this office and changed everything." He turned her in his arms then, ignoring the half-finished tasks scattered around them, and kissed her properly—slow, deep, and unhurried—his hands cupping her face as if she were the most precious thing in the world.

By late afternoon, the sun had softened into a rich, honeyed glow that filled every corner of the room. The work was mostly done, but the Dean's clinginess had only deepened. He sat in his chair and pulled her to sit sideways on his lap, his arms locking securely around her so she couldn't move far, resting his head against her chest while she sorted through the final correspondence. He traced patterns on her arm with his fingertips, whispered quiet compliments against her skin, and occasionally looked up to catch her gaze with that same unwavering, devoted intensity.

"You see?" he said softly, when she laughed at his refusal to let her stand even to put away a single folder. "This is how it should be. You and me—together, always, even in the middle of the day, even when we're supposed to be working." He kissed the hollow of her throat, slow and sweet. "I don't want to be anywhere you aren't, Irina. Not in this office, not in this building, not in this life. You are my favorite place to be."
