Chapter 104 - Chapter 104: The Midnight Run and the Final Delivery

The late afternoon sun cast long, amber rays across the sprawling concrete expanse of the Dream Trucks compound as Rahul walked back through the security gates at 5:30 PM.

As promised by Tarun, his trusty mini-truck had just returned from its two-day city rental run and was parked neatly in the holding bay. Tarun was standing near the vehicle with a clipboard in hand, waiting for him.

"Right on time, Rahul," Tarun greeted him with a grin, handing over the vehicle keys along with two crisp one-thousand-rupee notes. "Your mini-truck came back in pristine condition, and here is your two-thousand-rupee rental earnings credit exactly as we agreed."

Rahul accepted the cash and the keys, nodding appreciatively. "Pleasure doing business with Dream Trucks, Tarun. Your fleet management is top-tier."

Without wasting a single minute, Rahul climbed into the cab of his mini-truck, started the engine, and drove straight out of the compound toward the textile merchant's warehouse in the commercial capital to pick up Gupta ji's four cubic meters of textile stock.

The loading process at the textile go-down was swift and efficient. The warehouse staff, already briefed on the arrangement, loaded the neatly bundled textile rolls directly into the compact cargo bed of the mini-truck. Rahul secured the waterproof tarpaulin cover tightly over the freight, tied down the industrial nylon ropes, and checked his dashboard clock.

6:30 PM.

He had completed the pickup and loading far quicker than anticipated. He sat behind the steering wheel, staring out through the windshield at the darkening highway stretching northward toward his home district. A wave of exhaustion tugged at his eyelids—he had barely slept properly over the past two days, executing an intense cycle of driving, negotiating, and unloading.

Yet, looking at the open road and calculating the logistics, a bold decision formed in his mind.

If I wait until tomorrow morning to start the drive back, I lose an entire day of turnaround time, Rahul reasoned, gripping the steering wheel firmly. The roads are clear tonight, the weather is stable, and the cargo is locked securely under the tarp. Why waste the night? I'll push through and drive back straight away.

He turned the key, shifted into first gear, and steered the mini-truck out onto the northbound highway bypass, officially launching his unscheduled midnight run.

The first few hours of driving passed in a steady, hypnotic rhythm. The highways were largely devoid of heavy commercial traffic, allowing Rahul to maintain a consistent cruising speed.

As midnight approached, however, the accumulated physical fatigue of the past week began to weigh heavily on his bones. His eyelids felt heavy, and the steady hum of the tires on the asphalt acted like a lullaby.

Recognizing the dangerous onset of driver fatigue, Rahul didn't push past his limits recklessly. He pulled the mini-truck off into a brightly lit, secure 24-hour highway service plaza at around 2:30 AM. He locked the doors from the inside, reclined the driver's seat slightly, and surrendered to a deep, two-hour power nap right there in the cabin.

At 4:30 AM, his internal alarm clock snapped him wide awake. He splashed cold water on his face at the station's washroom, grabbed a strong cup of hot roadside tea to clear the remaining fog from his mind, and climbed back behind the wheel.

Refreshed and laser-focused, he drove through the remaining miles of the dawn-lit highway. True to his revised calculation, as the morning sun climbed into the eastern sky, painting the clouds in brilliant shades of gold and orange, the familiar skyline of his home district hove into view.

At exactly 10:00 AM, Rahul steered the mini-truck down the commercial lane and pulled up directly in front of Gupta ji's textile shop.

Gupta ji stepped out onto the pavement, looking pleasantly surprised. "Rahul! You're back already? I thought your textile consignment was scheduled to arrive two days later according to our revised plan!"

"Plans are guidelines, Gupta ji, but execution is what builds trust," Rahul said with a confident smile as he hopped down from the cab, untying the tarp ropes. "Your four cubic meters of textile stock are safe, dry, and delivered right on schedule ahead of time. Zero damage."

With the help of the shop assistants, Rahul unloaded the textile bundles swiftly into the store. Gupta ji inspected the rolls, thoroughly impressed by the pristine condition of the goods, and immediately handed over the agreed payment in cash, including the service margin that netted Rahul his clean two-thousand-rupee profit for the secondary run.

As he pocketed the cash, the physical toll of the relentless five-day schedule finally caught up with him all at once. His shoulders felt heavy, his limbs apathetic, and his eyes burned with exhaustion.

He climbed back into the mini-truck, drove it carefully back to his residential quarter, and parked it in its usual bay. Walking up the stairs to his rented room, he didn't even bother turning on the lights or unpacking his duffel bag.

He walked straight to his bed, collapsed face-first onto the mattress, and plunged instantly into a profound, dreamless sleep.

The digital clock on his bedside table blinked softly as the hours ticked away, leaving him dead to the world until the evening shadows lengthened across his room. When he finally stirred, blinking sleepily and sitting up against the headboard, he glanced at his phone screen.

6:00 PM.

He had slept straight through the afternoon, waking up fully refreshed, physically restored, and mentally ready for whatever chapter of his empire came next.
