Chapter 9 - Crossing The Line

🖤 Chapter 8: Crossing the Line

Ethan Carter didn't get involved.

---

That was his rule.

Clear. Defined. Unbreakable.

---

He treated patients.

He solved problems.

He walked away.

---

No attachments.

No complications.

No crossing lines that didn't belong to him.

---

And yet—

as he stood in his office that evening, staring at the city lights through the glass window—

he had a feeling.

---

Something was coming.

---

Something he wouldn't be able to ignore.

---

The door opened without warning.

---

Ethan didn't turn immediately.

He already knew.

---

"I need you."

---

Vincenzo's voice.

Lower than usual.

Less controlled.

---

Ethan turned then.

---

And for the first time—

Vincenzo didn't look calm.

---

There was no blood.

No visible injury.

---

But his eyes—

were sharper.

Colder.

---

Urgent.

---

"For what?" Ethan asked.

---

"Not here."

---

Silence.

---

That was all it took.

---

Ethan should have said no.

---

Should have told him to leave.

Should have walked away—

like he always did.

---

But instead—

he grabbed his coat.

---

"Let's go."

---

---

The drive was quiet.

---

Too quiet.

---

Ethan sat in the passenger seat, gaze fixed ahead.

---

Streetlights passed in a blur.

---

He didn't ask questions.

Didn't need to.

---

Because whatever this was—

it wasn't something he could control.

---

And that alone—

was enough to make him uneasy.

---

The car stopped in front of a building that didn't look like it existed on any official record.

---

Dark.

Isolated.

Silent.

---

Vincenzo stepped out first.

---

Ethan followed.

---

The moment he stepped inside—

he felt it.

---

The difference.

---

This wasn't his world.

---

No clean hallways.

No quiet professionalism.

No predictable order.

---

Just tension.

Silence.

And something beneath it—

danger.

---

"This way," Vincenzo said.

---

Ethan followed without hesitation.

---

Because at this point—

turning back wasn't an option.

---

They entered a room.

---

And that's when Ethan saw him.

---

A man lying on the table.

Unconscious.

Bleeding.

---

Badly.

---

Ethan's expression shifted instantly.

---

Professional.

Focused.

---

"What happened?"

---

"Does it matter?" Vincenzo replied.

---

"No," Ethan said sharply, already moving closer. "But it tells me how long I have."

---

A pause.

---

"Not long," Vincenzo admitted.

---

That was enough.

---

Ethan got to work.

---

Fast. Precise. Controlled.

---

The room faded around him.

---

All that mattered now—

was saving him.

---

Minutes passed.

Or maybe longer.

---

Time didn't feel real.

---

Until finally—

Ethan stepped back.

---

"He'll live."

---

Silence.

---

Then—

a breath.

---

Not Ethan's.

---

Vincenzo's.

---

Subtle.

Barely noticeable.

---

But there.

---

Ethan removed his gloves slowly.

---

"You waited too long," he said.

---

"I had to be sure."

---

Ethan frowned slightly.

---

"About what?"

---

A pause.

---

Then—

quietly—

---

"That I could trust you."

---

Ethan stilled.

---

Just for a second.

---

Then he looked at him.

---

"You didn't have a choice."

---

Vincenzo's gaze didn't waver.

---

"I did."

---

Silence.

---

Different now.

---

Heavier.

---

More real.

---

Ethan exhaled slowly.

---

"This isn't normal."

---

A faint shift in Vincenzo's expression.

---

"When has anything about this been normal?"

---

Ethan let out a quiet breath.

---

Then—

he stepped closer.

---

"At this point," he said, voice calm but firm,

"we need to be clear."

---

Vincenzo didn't interrupt.

---

Didn't look away.

---

So Ethan continued.

---

"I don't do uncertainty."

---

A pause.

---

"If this is going to continue…"

---

He stopped for a second.

---

Then said it—

---

"…we decide what it is."

---

Silence.

---

Vincenzo stepped closer.

---

"And what do you think it is?"

---

Ethan held his gaze.

---

"Nothing serious."

---

A beat.

---

"Not yet."

---

Vincenzo watched him carefully.

---

"Go on."

---

Ethan exhaled slowly.

---

"We try this."

---

A pause.

---

"Temporarily."

---

Vincenzo's eyes narrowed slightly.

---

"A trial?"

---

Ethan nodded once.

---

"Yes."

---

Silence stretched between them.

---

Then—

Vincenzo let out a quiet breath.

---

"And if it doesn't work?"

---

Ethan didn't hesitate.

---

"Then we stop."

---

Another pause.

---

Then—

Vincenzo said softly:

---

"You think it'll be that simple?"

---

Ethan's voice stayed steady.

---

"It has to be."

---

Silence again.

---

Then—

very faintly—

---

Vincenzo smiled.

---

"Alright."

---

A step closer.

---

"We try."

---

Ethan nodded once.

---

Controlled.

---

But something had already shifted.

---

Because both of them knew—

---

This was never going to be simple.

---

From the corner of the room, one of the men shifted slightly.

---

"Boss…"

---

Vincenzo didn't look away from Ethan.

---

"Handle it," he said.

---

The man nodded immediately.

---

Ethan glanced around the room again.

---

At the unfamiliar space.

At the people who moved without questioning him.

---

At the world—

he had just stepped into.

---

"This isn't over, is it?" he asked quietly.

---

Vincenzo's expression darkened slightly.

---

"No."

---

A pause.

---

"Lucas won't stop."

---

The name settled in the air.

---

Unfamiliar.

But heavy.

---

Ethan didn't ask more.

---

Not yet.

---

Because he already understood enough.

---

This wasn't just complicated anymore.

---

It was dangerous.

---

Ethan grabbed his coat.

---

"I should go."

---

Vincenzo didn't stop him.

---

But as Ethan reached the door—

---

"You shouldn't get involved," Vincenzo said.

---

Ethan paused.

---

Then—

without turning—

---

"Too late."

---

Silence.

---

Then—

he walked out.

---

And for the first time—

Ethan Carter stepped into a world—

---

he knew—

---

he wouldn't walk out of easily.
