Chapter 352 - Chapter 348

**Chapter 348: Aftermath in the Ashes**

Jedi Knight Ares Nune stood on the bridge of the Venator-class Star Destroyer *Command Kite*, arms crossed over his chest as streaks of hyperspace blurred past the viewport. Beside him, Master Plo Koon observed the swirling blue tunnel with quiet intensity, his masked face unreadable. The 104th Battalion—"Wolf Pack"—was aboard the accompanying ships, their distinctive yellow-marked armor already prepped for rapid deployment. Fifteen Venators formed the relief force, a respectable squadron dispatched the moment fragmented reports from Dentaal reached Republic command.

The journey felt heavy. News of the battle had outpaced them in fragments: High Jedi General Dagon Marek had done it again. Against overwhelming odds—an ancient *Malevolence* ion cannon dreadnought, the new turbolaser-heavy *Malice*, and a massive reinforcement fleet rerouted by the tactical droid TX-01—Marek's hybrid armada had held. More than held. It had annihilated a far larger and better-armed Confederate force.

Yet the cost…

Ares glanced at the preliminary casualty reports scrolling across a side holoscreen. Over 8,000 Republic personnel confirmed dead. The numbers were still climbing as rescue operations continued in the debris field.

Plo Koon's calm voice broke the silence. "General Marek continues to surprise the galaxy. Victory through innovation and raw will. But every triumph carves deeper scars."

Ares nodded grimly. "The *Terminus* is heavily damaged. Multiple *Valiant*-class cruisers took brutal hits. The droid swarms were endless—two hundred thousand Vultures alone, they say. Our pilots paid dearly."

The damage assessment was sobering.

**Valiant-class cruisers:**

- Heavily damaged: *Yaddle*, *Enterprise*, *Independence*, *Knull* (five in total, their hammerhead prows scarred and forward hangars compromised).

- Moderately damaged: *Sovereign* (Tarkin's command), *Endurance*, *Skelter* (three ships, still combat-capable but needing extensive repairs).

- Lightly damaged: *Hood*, *York* (two vessels that had danced through the worst of the fighter waves thanks to precise point-defense coordination).

**Resurgent-class battlecruisers:**

- Heavily damaged: *Finalizer*, *Steadfast*, *Ranger*, *Fortitude* (four of the massive dagger-shaped warships, their reinforced hulls pitted and weapon emplacements offline in sections).

- Moderately damaged: *Grey Wolf* (one ship that had borne the brunt of a Recusant counter-charge but held formation).

**Venator-class Star Destroyers:**

- Five completely destroyed, their reactor cores breached or shattered by concentrated ion cannon fire from the *Malevolence* before its end.

- Six heavily damaged, limping but salvageable.

**Support elements:**

- Three Pelta-class medical frigates damaged while evacuating wounded under fire.

- Ten Lancer-class pursuit frigates destroyed outright; another fifteen damaged, their anti-fighter role having drawn relentless Vulture attention.

**Starfighter losses:**

- Over 3,000 TIE variants destroyed (Whispers, Defenders, Punishers, and the new Advanced models). More than 1,000 pilots killed in the merciless dogfights. Over 2,000 rescued by shuttles and escape pods amid the chaos.

On the enemy side, the butcher's bill was staggering. Hundreds of thousands of Vulture droids reduced to scrap. Destroyed Confederate vessels included eight Recusant-class dreadnoughts, fourteen Providence-class carriers, forty Munificent-class frigates in the initial waves, followed by another forty Recusant destroyers, twenty Lucrehulk-class battleships, and over a hundred additional Munificents. The *Malevolence* itself was gone—its burning remains drifting among the graveyard, top section and half its weapon mounts obliterated by the *Terminus*'s desperate, Force-guided ramming maneuver. The *Malice* had escaped, critically damaged and limping away under Selena's command, but the psychological blow to the Confederacy was immense.

"They look like they've been through hell," Commander Wolffe muttered as he stepped up beside Ares and Plo Koon, his scarred face and cybernetic eye reflecting the bridge lights. The Wolf Pack commander rarely minced words.

"Yes… indeed," Plo Koon replied softly, the Force around him radiating quiet sorrow for the fallen.

The transmission came moments later, crackling with static and urgency.

"*Command Kite*, this is *Terminus* actual. We have multiple injured across the fleet. Critical systems failing on several capital ships. Requesting immediate escort to safe harbor for emergency repairs and medical evac."

Ares moved to the comm station. "*Terminus*, this is Jedi Knight Ares Nune aboard *Command Kite*. Master Plo Koon and the 104th are with us. We're jumping in to assist. What's your status?"

The reply was terse, the voice of a weary clone officer. "Heavy structural damage to the *Terminus* ram prow and forward sections. F-Spar cannon offline. Multiple breaches. The *Valiants* and other *Resurgents* are in similar shape. We held the line, sir… but we're bleeding."

Plo Koon leaned toward the pickup. "Hold fast, General Marek's forces. We are en route. May the Force be with you."

Ares gave the order. "Escort them to the Dentaal orbital shipyard. It's small, but it's the only one in range capable of handling capital ships of this size. Deploy tugs and medical shuttles immediately upon arrival. Prioritize life support and wounded."

"Yes sir," the helmsman responded. "Deploying tugs."

As the relief fleet dropped out of hyperspace near the battle-scarred system, the scale of the carnage became visible even at long range. Debris clouds stretched for thousands of kilometers—twisted droid hulls, shattered Republic escort frigates, and the smoldering hulk of what had once been the *Malevolence*. Fires still burned in vacuum where oxygen pockets lingered in ruptured compartments. Rescue beacons winked like dying stars.

The *Terminus* dominated the center of the surviving Republic formation, its once-pristine dagger silhouette marred by deep gashes and scorched armor plating. Crews in vac-suits swarmed its hull like ants repairing a wounded beast. Nearby, the damaged *Valiants* maintained loose formation, their forward hangars flickering with emergency lighting. The *Resurgents* looked like veterans of a thousand wars.

Ares watched the tugs latch on, gentle blue tractor beams guiding the larger vessels toward Dentaal's modest orbital yards. Medical frigates moved in, transferring the most critical wounded while clone medics and Jedi healers worked tirelessly.

In the weeks ahead, the Senate would erupt. Loyalists would point to the Confederacy's blatant violation of post-Ruusan armistice limits—building massive Subjugator-class ships like the *Malevolence* and *Malice*—and argue that despite this, the Republic had prevailed through superior tactics and resolve. Dagon Marek's name was already becoming legend in the Core Worlds: the liberator of systems, the man who turned the tide with innovative fleets and unyielding will.

The Chancellor's militarist faction would seize the moment. Calls for new dreadnought construction—or outright purchase from Kuat Drive Yards—would grow louder. More *Resurgents*, more *Valiants*, perhaps even larger experimental designs. The war was escalating, and the old ways were no longer enough.

Yet on the bridge of the *Command Kite*, as tugs towed the battered *Terminus* into safer orbit, Plo Koon placed a hand on Ares's shoulder.

"Victory has a price," the Kel Dor Master said. "We must ensure it is not paid in vain. General Marek walks a narrow path—balance between light and dark. We must watch, guide where we can."

Ares nodded, eyes fixed on the drifting wreckage. "He annihilated a fleet that should have overwhelmed him. But the *Malice* escaped. Grievous and Dooku will not forget this. Neither will the Senate."

Wolffe grunted. "Let them come. The Wolf Pack stands ready."

As the combined fleets settled into defensive formation around Dentaal, the long process of salvage, repair, and mourning began. Over 8,000 dead. Thousands more injured. Ships scarred but unbroken.

High Jedi General Dagon Marek had won another impossible battle. But in the ashes of victory, the galaxy's shadows only deepened.
