Chapter 42 - Chapter 41: “Family Crisis… and Strength”

Saturday night. The restaurant lights were still glowing behind us, but the warmth of our romantic date had been replaced by a heavy tension. My fingers trembled as I clutched the phone, Ethan standing firmly by my side.

"Lara… it's okay," he said gently, his hand brushing over mine. "Whatever's happening… we'll face it together."

I nodded, biting my lip, trying to steady my racing heart. "It's my dad… he had an accident at work. They said it's serious. I… I need to see him now."

Ethan didn't hesitate. "Then we leave. Right now." His arm wrapped around my shoulders as we hurried to the car. The city lights blurred past, but his presence was my anchor, steady and comforting amidst my panic.

In the hospital, the sterile smell and quiet corridors only heightened my anxiety. Nurses led us to a private waiting area while my dad was being treated. I sank into a chair, covering my face with my hands, trying to hold back tears.

Ethan knelt beside me, pressing a gentle kiss to my temple. "Hey… breathe. You're not alone. I'm here."

"I know… but…" I whispered, voice breaking. "What if something happens? What if…"

He held me tighter. "Stop. Don't go there. You can't control everything, Lara. All we can do is be strong and be together."

I exhaled shakily, leaning into his chest, letting him hold me. "I don't even know what I would do without you," I admitted softly.

"You'll never have to find out," he murmured. "I'm not going anywhere. Not now, not ever."

The minutes dragged on, each tick of the clock stretching endlessly. Every time the door opened, my heart leapt, but then disappointment followed. Ethan stayed close, rubbing my back, whispering soft words of reassurance, never letting me feel alone.

Finally, the doctor emerged. "Your father is stable," he said. Relief washed over me, and I sank to my knees, tears spilling freely. "Thank you… thank you so much."

Ethan held me up, arms steady. "See? Everything's going to be okay. He's okay."

I nodded, resting my head against his chest. "I was so scared… I don't even want to imagine losing him."

"You won't lose him," Ethan said firmly, his hand threading through mine. "And even if the world gets messy, we'll face it. Together. Always."

For the first time that evening, I allowed myself to breathe fully. I realized how much I had relied on Ethan—not just as a lover, but as my safe place, my support, my anchor in chaos.

The hospital lights glimmered softly around us as Ethan pressed a tender kiss to my temple. "See? Even in the hardest moments… love makes you stronger. And we're stronger together."

I smiled through my tears, gripping his hand tightly. "Yes… together."

Even amidst fear, uncertainty, and the unexpected twists of life, we had each other. And for tonight, that was enough.
