Chapter 39: Pippin's Stone
The scream woke the camp.
Cedric was on his feet with his sword drawn before conscious thought engaged, his body responding to months of Ranger training and the Crown's enhanced reflexes. Around him, the company scrambled from their bedrolls — Aragorn reaching for Andúril, Legolas already nocking an arrow, Gimli swinging his axe toward a threat that did not yet have a face.
Then they saw Pippin.
The Hobbit was on his back in the center of the camp, his small hands clutching the Palantír as though it were welded to his palms. His eyes were wide and fixed on something beyond the stars, his mouth stretched in a scream that seemed to tear itself from his throat without his permission.
And the stone was glowing.
"Pippin!" Merry scrambled toward his cousin, but Aragorn caught him and held him back.
"Do not touch him! The stone has him — if you break the contact wrong—"
Gandalf was already moving. The wizard crossed the camp in three strides, his staff blazing with white light, and tore the Palantír from Pippin's hands with a force that sent the Hobbit tumbling backward.
The connection broke.
[PACT STATUS: CONTRACTED]
[SAURON'S ATTENTION: DETECTED]
[CONCEALMENT: MAXIMUM PRIORITY]
The moment Sauron's awareness had touched the camp, Cedric felt the Pact react with violent force. The System contracted inside his chest, drawing itself into a tight knot of hidden darkness, draining essence at an alarming rate to maintain invisibility. The Eye had swept across the camp's spiritual landscape like a searchlight, probing for the Ring, for the Halfling who dared to use the seeing-stone.
And the Pact had made itself very, very small.
[ESSENCE DRAIN: SEVERE]
[RESERVE STATUS: LOW]
[CONCEALMENT: SUCCESSFUL]
The Eye had passed over him. Had found a terrified Hobbit and assumed — correctly, from its perspective — that it had found what it was looking for. The Ring was near. The Halfling had the stone. The war's next phase could begin.
It had not found the Crown.
This time.
Pippin lay shaking on the ground, his face pale, his eyes still wide with the afterimage of what he had seen.
"He spoke to me," the Hobbit gasped. "The Eye. It asked me questions. About the Ring. About the Halfling who carried it. I didn't — I couldn't—"
"Hush." Gandalf knelt beside him, his voice gentle but his face carved with concern. "What did you tell him, Pippin? Exactly."
"Nothing. I don't think. He asked where the Ring was, and I... I couldn't answer, because I don't know. And he asked who I was, and I said my name, and then..." Pippin's voice broke. "Then it was like being held over a fire. Like being burned without burning."
"You resisted him." Gandalf's hand found the Hobbit's shoulder. "That alone is more than most could manage."
But the wizard's eyes were troubled, and Cedric understood why. Sauron had seen a Hobbit with the Palantír. A Hobbit near Isengard, where the army that was supposed to capture the Ring-bearer had been destroyed. The Dark Lord would assume — would have to assume — that the Ring was close. That his enemies had it in their possession.
And he would act accordingly.
"We must ride," Gandalf said, straightening. "Now. Tonight."
"To Edoras?" Aragorn asked.
"To Minas Tirith." The wizard's face was grim. "Sauron believes the Ring is with us. He will accelerate his assault on Gondor to prevent us from using it against him. I must warn Denethor, and I must get Pippin away from here — far from any stone that Sauron might use to find him again."
[KINSLAYER'S INSIGHT: PIPPIN]
[MARK STATUS: DIMMED (GUILT)]
[BETRAYAL VALUE: REDUCED (TEMPORARY)]
Pippin's bright mark had faded to something grey and ashamed. The Hobbit sat hunched on the ground, his usual cheer extinguished by the weight of what he believed was his own foolishness.
Cedric crossed to him while Gandalf prepared Shadowfax.
"Pippin."
The Hobbit looked up, his eyes red with unshed tears. "I ruined everything. Gandalf was keeping the stone hidden, and I stole it like a child stealing sweets, and now—"
"You were brave."
"I was stupid."
"Sometimes those are the same thing." Cedric crouched beside him, bringing their faces level. "The stone called to you. Its nature is to draw the curious, to tempt those who seek knowledge. You resisted Sauron's questioning — resisted the Eye of the Enemy when hardened warriors have broken under that gaze. That is not foolishness. That is courage."
[HEROIC COMFORT: APPLIED]
[CONSEQUENCE: TIER 1 — MINOR RUNE-BURN]
The burn was sharp but brief, and Cedric ignored it. Pippin needed this. Needed someone to tell him that he was not a failure, that the war was not lost because of a Hobbit's curiosity.
"You think so?" Pippin's voice was small.
"I know so." Cedric gripped the Hobbit's shoulder. "Ride to Minas Tirith with Gandalf. Do what he tells you. And remember — the same curiosity that drew you to the stone also kept the Shire alive when no one else would tend its gardens. That curiosity is not a weakness, Pippin. It is who you are."
The Hobbit's mark brightened slightly — not to its full intensity, but enough to show that the words had landed.
"Will I see you again?"
"In Gondor. When the time comes." Cedric released his shoulder and stood. "Now go. The wizard is waiting."
Merry watched his cousin ride away into the darkness, and his face carried grief that had no words.
The older Hobbit stood at the edge of the camp, his small form silhouetted against the starlight, his hands clenched at his sides. Shadowfax's hoofbeats faded into the distance, and with them went the one person Merry had been trying to protect since they left the Shire together.
Cedric came to stand beside him.
"He'll be safe with Gandalf," he said.
"I know." Merry's voice was steady, but his eyes did not leave the horizon. "That's not what I fear. I fear... I fear that the war will change him. That the Pippin who comes back to the Shire — if he comes back — will not be the cousin I grew up with."
"War changes everyone."
"Yes." Merry finally looked at him, and his eyes held a weight that belonged to someone twice his age. "It has changed you, too. You're darker than you were in Rivendell. Harder. Like a blade that has been sharpened too often."
[KINSLAYER'S INSIGHT: MERRY]
[OBSERVATION: ACCURATE]
[SUSPICION LEVEL: 1 (STABLE)]
The assessment was precise, and Cedric felt its accuracy like a blade pressed against his skin. Merry had seen something true — not the Pact, not the Crown, but the cost of carrying them. The erosion that came from choosing darkness again and again, even when the choices were small.
"Perhaps," he said. "But the blade is still pointed at the Enemy."
"For now." Merry's voice carried no accusation, only observation. "I hope it stays that way."
They stood together in silence as the stars wheeled overhead, and somewhere to the east, Gandalf rode toward Gondor with a Hobbit who had looked into the Eye of the Enemy and survived.
The Pact stirred inside Cedric's chest, depleted but not destroyed. Sauron had swept across the camp and found nothing but a curious Halfling. The concealment had held.
But for how long?
The question had no answer. The Eye was looking now — actively seeking, probing for the Ring it believed was in enemy hands. And every time Sauron turned his gaze toward the company, the Pact would have to hide again. Would have to drain more essence to maintain the invisibility that kept Cedric's true nature secret.
The mask is cracking, he thought. The inner circle is comparing notes. And now the Enemy is watching too.
The walls are closing in from every direction.
Edoras waited to the south, with its golden hall and its victory feast and the woman whose eyes could see the cage around his soul. After the feast would come the beacons, and after the beacons would come Gondor, and after Gondor would come a battle where a king would ride to his death and the Witch-King would meet his end.
And somewhere in that chaos, Cedric would have to choose what he was willing to become.
The stars offered no guidance. They never did.
