Chapter 41 - Chapter 41 – The Mother Charge Strategy

[Soul Strength: 21]

[Soul Strength: 17]

Honestly, Ethan did not even need a wand to deal with the two Aurors.

At this distance, devouring their souls would only take a moment.

But where was the fun in that?

No—

If he had a chance to unleash the legendary Mother Charge attack, then naturally he was going to use it.

Could anyone else in the entire wizarding world summon a cursed unicorn mother to solve their problems?

Exactly.

The two Aurors were visibly stunned by Ethan suddenly screaming "Mum!" in the middle of combat.

Unfortunately for them, neither Ethan nor the black unicorn behind him intended to show mercy during that moment of confusion.

Although Alexia was unwilling on a personal level, the Unbreakable Vow offered her absolutely no choice.

Ethan had requested help.

The two Aurors were clearly the problem.

And if she refused—

She would die.

The black unicorn lowered her spiralling horn toward the taller Auror.

A wave of pitch-black binding magic erupted from the silver tip instantly.

The curse passed straight through the Auror's Shield Charm as though it did not exist.

The Auror's expression changed violently.

He barely managed to roll sideways to avoid Alexia charging directly through his chest, but his legs instantly froze solid where the curse touched them.

Most wizards were arrogantly dismissive toward the magic of non-human creatures.

House-elves.

Goblins.

Magical beasts.

And apparently evil nightmare unicorns.

But the moment they truly fought those creatures, they suddenly realised something horrifying:

They had never actually learned how to defend against them.

"Expelliarmus!"

Just as the two Aurors attempted to Apparate away, the Count finally joined the battle from above.

At almost the exact same moment, Ethan stopped preparing his own Killing Curse.

He wanted to see how dangerous his newly acquired mother actually was.

Three wands instantly flew into the air.

The Count reacted with absurd precision, blasting all three weapons away mid-flight.

"Damn it!" the owl screamed. "In my next life, I'm asking God for a hundred hands!"

Because both claws were busy holding his own wand, he completely failed to catch the disarmed wands flying toward him. They simply bounced off his feathers before falling to the floor beside Ethan.

"Then you'd become a centipede," Ethan warned while picking up his own wand.

"How could an owl—"

The taller Auror never finished the sentence.

Unfortunately for him, the Count had only recently made an Unbreakable Vow with Ethan, meaning the Aurors had absolutely no idea the owl could speak.

Otherwise they might have been slightly more cautious.

"HELP—!"

The shorter Auror managed exactly one terrified scream before Alexia's horn pierced through both men in succession like kebabs.

Their bodies lifted violently into the air.

Unfortunately, the basement ceiling was too low for dramatic impalement poses. Both Aurors smashed hard into the stone roof before crashing back onto the floor.

The dark curse coating Alexia's horn immediately spread through their bodies.

The flesh around their wounds blackened and rotted visibly.

Decay spread rapidly outward like living poison.

Ethan's eyes brightened slightly.

His mother was alarmingly aggressive.

Without wasting another second, he devoured both souls immediately before Alexia accidentally destroyed them completely.

Still—

After absorbing the soul fragments from the manor earlier, Ethan's own growth had become dramatically slower.

The two Aurors together only improved his soul integrity by roughly zero-point-two percent.

At this rate, he would need to devour entire graduating classes from Hogwarts just to make meaningful progress.

And that calculation generously assumed the students were talented.

Most ordinary wizards possessed weak souls.

Maybe…

Maybe visiting the Ministry employees involved in the original experiments would be worthwhile someday.

Ethan strongly suspected many of them shared the same opinions as the dead Auror now rotting on the floor.

Hmm.

Apparently there were still many ways to die in magical Britain.

"Screeaaah—"

Alexia pawed irritably at the ground.

[Someone just helped you kill people. Release the curse immediately.]

"I never said you only had to help once," Ethan replied innocently while blinking at her. "You promised to stay with me forever, Mother Number Two."

[What do you mean Mother Number Two?!]

"Rose is my actual mum," Ethan explained reasonably. "You're more like…"

He tilted his head thoughtfully.

"…a biological component."

"Mixed cooking oil," the Count added helpfully.

"Are you trying to get murdered again?" Ethan asked flatly.

Alexia stared at him coldly.

[You truly became exactly what they wanted.]

"The dark wizards who created me?" Ethan asked curiously. "Did they specifically predict I'd unlock the Mother Charge technique one day?"

[…]

It was honestly impressive how exhausted a unicorn could look.

"I'm not arguing about this anymore," Ethan declared. "I already explained myself earlier. I don't plan to treat you like a slave. I'm just a weak and helpless eleven-year-old student trying to survive."

[You are still lying.]

"You'll live inside my bag from now on," Ethan continued calmly while opening his enchanted handbag. "There are no black unicorns in the outside world. If people see you, they'll immediately capture you for research."

Alexia's psychic voice became deeply sarcastic.

[Thank you very much, little parasite.]

"Can we move past the emotional family conversation already?" the Count interrupted from above the cage. "I've been listening to endless nonsense for ten straight minutes."

"The chatting is finished," Ethan agreed. "I'm starving. Let's search this place properly."

He raised his wand and examined the basement more carefully.

Behind the alchemy table, partially hidden earlier by Devil's Snare vines, stood an entire wall of embedded bookshelves.

Interesting.

"The flames roar brightly."

Ethan conjured a large fire in the middle of the room.

The sudden heat and light forced the surrounding Devil's Snare to retreat hissing into cracks along the walls.

Now he could finally inspect everything properly.

"Oh, right."

Ethan suddenly turned back toward the unicorn.

"Your name was Alexia, wasn't it?"

[You aren't calling me Mother anymore?]

The black unicorn flicked her dark mane proudly.

"I only use that title during combat situations," Ethan replied matter-of-factly. "Anyway, Alexia is too long. I'll shorten it."

He pointed at her decisively.

"Your new name is Ali."

[…My name is Alexia.]

"Good to know, Ali."

Ignoring her visible outrage completely, Ethan returned to the bookshelves.

"You've been trapped here for years," he said casually while scanning the old records and alchemy journals. "How much do you know about the experiments that happened inside this manor?"
