Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Cracks in the Silence

The office felt different without him.

Quieter.

Heavier.

Ava sat at her desk, staring at the document in front of her—but her mind wasn't fully there.

It kept drifting back to the way he said:

"Stay."

Not harsh.

Not cold.

Just… certain.

Hours passed.

Still no sign of him.

Ava exhaled slowly, rubbing her temples.

"Why do I feel like I'm waiting for something…?"

The door opened.

She looked up immediately.

He walked in.

No words.

No greeting.

Just presence.

And yet—

something was off.

His tie was slightly loosened.

His expression—still controlled—but not as sharp.

And for the first time…

he looked like someone who had just stepped out of a battle.

"Sir," she said carefully, standing.

His eyes lifted to hers.

And for a moment—

just a moment—

he didn't respond.

Then—

"…Sit."

She hesitated.

Then slowly sat back down.

He walked past her desk.

Stopped near the window.

Silent.

Ava watched him.

Carefully.

Trying to understand.

"…Did something happen?"

The words came out before she could stop them.

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he stared out at the city.

Then quietly—

"…Nothing you need to worry about."

But that wasn't true.

She could feel it.

Something had changed.

"You look tired," she said softly.

The room went still.

He turned slightly.

"…Do I?"

Ava hesitated.

Then nodded.

"…Yes."

Silence.

Longer this time.

Then—

to her surprise—

he gave the smallest response.

"…I don't usually allow people to notice that."

Ava blinked.

"…Why?"

A faint pause.

Then—

"Because it's a weakness."

The word lingered in the air.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Ava frowned slightly.

"That's not weakness."

His eyes shifted to hers.

"Isn't it?"

She stood slowly.

Walking a little closer.

Not too close.

Just enough.

"Everyone gets tired," she said quietly.

"…It doesn't make you weak."

He studied her.

Longer than usual.

"And what makes you strong, Ava?"

Her breath caught slightly.

But she didn't look away.

"I don't give up."

Something flickered in his eyes.

Again.

That same quiet interest.

But deeper now.

"…You don't break," he said softly.

Ava shook her head slightly.

"No."

A pause.

Then—

"…What about you?"

The question slipped out.

Simple.

But dangerous.

The room went still.

He didn't answer immediately.

For the first time—

he looked… uncertain.

Just for a second.

Then—

"I don't break."

But this time—

his voice was quieter.

Less convincing.

Ava noticed.

Of course she did.

"You don't have to pretend with me," she said gently.

That made him look at her again.

Really look.

And for a second—

the distance between them felt smaller.

Not physically.

But emotionally.

Too close.

Too dangerous.

"You think I'm pretending?" he asked.

Ava hesitated.

Then—

"…I think you're protecting something."

Silence.

Heavy.

Charged.

He took a step closer.

Just one.

"You're observant," he said.

Her heart beat faster.

But she didn't step back.

"I pay attention."

Another step.

Now closer.

Enough to make her aware of every inch of space between them.

"And what do you think you see?" he asked.

Her breath was quieter now.

Steadier.

"I think…" she said slowly,

"…you don't trust people."

He didn't deny it.

"I think you keep everyone at a distance…"

Still no response.

"…because you're afraid of what happens if you let them in."

That one landed.

She could see it.

A flicker.

Barely there.

But real.

For the first time—

he didn't have a quick answer.

And that silence…

was louder than anything he had ever said.

Ava realized something in that moment.

This man…

who controlled everything…

who intimidated everyone…

wasn't as untouchable as he seemed.

And somehow—

that made her feel something dangerous.

"…You talk too much," he said finally.

But his voice—

wasn't as cold.

Ava's lips curved slightly.

"…You don't talk enough."

A beat.

Then—

a very faint shift.

Not quite a smile.

But close.

"Careful," he said quietly.

"…you're starting to sound comfortable."

Ava held his gaze.

"…Maybe I am."

Silence.

But not the same as before.

This one felt…

different.

Softer.

Unspoken.

Alive.

Then—

a knock at the door.

The moment broke instantly.

"Sir."

He stepped back.

Distance returning.

Walls rising again.

"Yes."

But as he turned toward the door—

he paused slightly.

Just slightly.

And glanced back at her.

For a second.

Just a second.

Something unspoken passed between them.

Then—

he left.

And Ava stood there…

realizing something she wasn't ready to admit.

She wasn't just working for him anymore.

She was beginning to understand him.

And that…

was the beginning of something neither of them could control.
