"The Paradox of Record"
Chapter 8: The Merging of the Concept Fragment
The moment Fray's palm touched the floating book, he immediately felt a strange weight in his chest. The air in the room seemed to freeze in place. The moon outside the window, once a faint glow, now shimmered as if waving at him.
"This isn't just a book…" he muttered to himself.
Every page felt alive. They pulsed, brushing against the edges of his mind. He couldn't help but recall the fight with the priest and the black man. In the last beats of his heart before striking, a strange force had surged through him—pulling him toward a path far beyond ordinary human power.
This was the Concept Fragment. And it had chosen him.
---
The Merge
Slowly, he lifted the crystal to his chest. He could feel every cell in his body responding. The air around him moved, as if inhaling his energy with every breath.
"Are you ready to become more than yourself?"
It wasn't clear who spoke—the book, or perhaps his own mind—but he could feel it. Every second stretched into what felt like years.
The Fragment revealed its first lesson: Principal Pattern dissolution. It wasn't mere knowledge—it was an essence, one he had to dissolve fully in body and mind.
---
Dissolution of the Principal Pattern
Strange symbols appeared in his mind—abstract shapes, flying numbers, and patterns he could not comprehend. His head felt like it had been flooded with billions of ideas at once.
"Become one with me. Embrace my knowledge."
He had to accept it without losing himself. One wrong step, and Corruption Stage 1 could strike—mild hallucinations at first, but it could quickly escalate.
---
Absorbing the Patterns
The Patterns emerged:
Pattern 1–4: perception trials—see what ordinary eyes cannot.
Pattern 5–6: moral and decision trials—act rightly under pressure.
Pattern 7–8: reality manipulation—control small aspects of the surrounding world.
Pattern 9–10: the highest—testing the very core of one's being. Only a few Ascendants ever reach this.
With the Fragment's help, Fray gained a shortcut—but every shortcut came with risks.
---
Unknown Principles
As he went deeper, he felt the presence of Unknown Principles—forces testing the Ascendant.
Elizabeth… what if she sees this? What if she discovers what happened to her body?
Illusions appeared: he saw his sister in pain, enemies lurking, events designed to invoke fear.
But he learned to distinguish illusion from reality. The Fragment didn't just grant power; it taught control.
"To continue, you must become one with me—but you cannot lose yourself."
---
Corruption
As the merge progressed, he felt the first faint hallucinations. Yet instead of losing control, he channeled the Fragment's energy to strengthen his focus. He nearly gave in several times, but the Fragment stabilized him.

Integration
After hours, he finally felt the change:
His senses sharpened.
Perception and illusion control were under his command.
The beginning of dual/fusion Concept Lines emerged.
The Fragment had become part of him—a piece of power that could no longer be separated.
---
Thoughts of Elizabeth
Amidst the newfound power, he couldn't stop thinking:
"Elizabeth… what if she sees this? I cannot let anything happen to my family."
His next moves had to be careful. Not just power, but morality and family bonds were at stake.

Next Mission
He knew the journey was far from over. The Unknown Principles would continue to test him, Corruption lurked, and the dual/fusion Concept Lines would unlock even higher Patterns.
He stood by the window, gazing at the moon. Whispering to himself:
"There's no going back now. I'm an Ascendant. And this path is only beginning."
To be continued...
