Chapter 34 - Novac

The gang members still shot at us of course and to that I answered simply.

Headshots Son!

'Never played with aimbot before, shit's just unfair.' I thought with a grin after putting holes in the gang members foreheads without even slowing down.

Jess just stared at me is horror at that little display as she finally figured out that my shiny armor and motorbike weren't owned by someone merely lucky but genuinely dangerous as fuck. I snickered at the idea as she simply didn't know the half of the truth. -

If I wasn't trying to keep the system and my cards under wraps I would probably be threatening enough at this point to stroll into anywhere in Vegas while being nigh untouchable. My strongest creatures only cost eight mana total after all and if I played the Krosan drover they would cost two mana less which meant I could summon both of them in the span of two days. Mind you that was an eight eight and a seven four which judging from how powerful a four four was basically meant strong enough to make Deathclaw look like kittens.-

Perhaps not quite apocalyptical in might but good enough that anyone who wasn't suicidal would think twice. Still I really didn't want to deal with the drama that came with holding such power. People expect things from those with power, protection, guidance, resources and leadership.

All pains in the ass.

If I wanted to deal with that nonsense I'd take Adams idea up and start my own empire. Rather than that I figured I could just let others take care of it while I watched the show.

Like now.

Jess was THE courier. The badass motherfucker who took names and chewed bubblegum across Vegas from the game. My existence made her journey a bit smoother since I had my bike but other than that I hadn't really derailed her story much. -

She still went chasing Benny like a hound after a rat and had met the legion for the first time like in the game. So far she seemed to fit into the more upright karmic path which was honestly fine by me. A bit inconvenient as far as taking the easy but morally dubious ways out of situations but that was hardly a deal breaker. At the very least it wasn't as if her moral compass had actually gotten us in trouble yet.-

Once the road left the canyon area it became quite easy to spot Novac.

There was a giant green T-rex there after all.

The dinosaur was built right next to a motel and a gas station. There was a few other buildings as well from people settling in before the war but most of the houses had been destroyed one way or another. I spotted the wasteland docs tent set up on the concrete across from an abandoned car wash and the glint of a sniper scope peeking out the mouth of the T-rex as we approached.-

I waved at the one scoping us out from that place and slowed the bike down to a park right on the edge of the road outside the motel's fence and front office. The commotion drew people out of their homes with curiosity and among the was a woman of mid thirty or forty with a faded sun dress and blonde hair tied back. She had on glasses and eyed my bike and armor with a small upturn of her lips and a slight gleam to her eyes.-

"Howdy. Couldn't come through this way without stopping by. You run this place?" I said acting friendly even if i wanted nothing more than to put a hole in this woman's head.

Backstory time!

This blonde chick who seemed nice enough was Jeanie May Crawford. She ran the office at the motel, a sort of mayor figure for the town basically. The problem I had with her however was that she had done something absolutely vile.

She sold a pregnant woman to the legion as a slave.

Specifically the wife and unborn child of the ex-NCR soldier who lived here, Boone.-

The exact details weren't covered in the game but roughly what you as a player find out is that she and Boone's wife argued, like a lot. Really it seemed like they just did NOT like each other very much. And of course Jeanie May somehow got in touch with the legion and made a deal. They get the woman and her unborn kid and she gets a nice and tidy stack of caps. It was a sickening transaction when the legions "methods" were no secret when it came to infants and women slaves.-

The story gets SO much fucking worse.

See Boone was a recon sniper in the NCR. This meant he tracked the legion and his wife back to their landing zone, Cottonwood cove, and was faced with the terrible understanding he couldn't save his wife. But he also knew that letting the legion have her was a fate worse than death. So this man made sure they didn't have her. Yes he killed his wife and unborn child to save them from the suffering the legion would have inflicted on them. To say it broke him would not be terribly far from the truth. He still functioned but he was waiting for death with a burning hatred for the legion and whoever sold his wife to them.-

"Well I can't say I've ever seen a stranger quite like you. Names Jeanie May, I run the Dinobite motel and most of the rest of Novac too." she said with a smile.

"Just lucky. Listen it's been a long trip and we were wondering if you might have a room we could stay in for the night. It's fine if it's one of the boarded up ones, I could get in even with them there." I said trying very hard not to leak any of my disgust.

"Well in that case we've got plenty of rooms, just most are boarded up since we've got no keys for the doors. You two together?" she asked with a look of interest.

"Just traveling together for convenience. He's got a motorbike after all." Jess said drawing that line fast.

I nodded "What she said. By the way you fine folk wouldn't have happened to see a fellow in a checkered suit pass through here would you?" I asked feigning friendliness.

"Can't say I remember any sort like that. Maybe you can ask Manny, the watchman in the dinosaur's mouth. He might have seen whoever it is you are looking for." Jeanie May said shaking her head.
