Chapter 4 - Chapter Four: What the Shadows Know

The forest didn't celebrate their win.

No sudden burst of light. No warm, safe feeling coming back.

Just… quiet.

Too quiet.

Liora shook out her fur, trying to calm her racing heart. "Okay so—good news? We didn't die."

Kael didn't respond.

He was staring at the ground.

"…Kael?"

Still nothing.

She stepped closer. "Hey, shadow boy, you good or—"

"Look."

His voice was low.

Serious.

Not joking.

Liora followed his gaze.

The ground where the shadows had been… wasn't healing.

Usually, the forest fixed itself. Cracks closed. Plants regrew. Magic smoothed everything over like it never happened.

But here?

The earth was gray.

Lifeless.

Like the magic had been ripped out.

"…that's not normal," she whispered.

"No," Kael said. "It's not."

He stepped forward carefully, lowering his head toward the ground.

The shadows hadn't just attacked.

They'd taken something.

Liora's tail dimmed slightly. "So they're not just… mindless creatures?"

Kael hesitated.

"…No."

That one word hit harder than anything else.

A faint sound echoed through the trees.

Not a growl.

Not footsteps.

Something softer.

Like… whispering.

Liora's ears twitched. "Do you hear that?"

Kael went still.

"I hear it."

The whispering grew louder.

Not from one direction.

From everywhere.

"…Liora…"

"Yeah?"

"…don't listen to it."

Too late.

The voices slipped into her mind like cold air.

Soft.

Gentle.

Familiar.

You're losing it…Your light is fading…You can't protect anything…

Her breath caught.

"No—"

You're not strong enough. You never were.

"Stop…"

Her glow flickered violently.

The forest around her seemed to tilt.

The whispers weren't random.

They knew her.

"Liora!"

Kael's voice cut through it, sharp.

She blinked, stumbling back. "They're—talking—"

"I know. Don't listen."

"They sound—real—"

"They're not."

But then—

Kael stiffened.

His expression changed.

Just slightly.

Liora noticed immediately. "Wait… do YOU hear something too?"

He didn't answer.

Which was answer enough.

The whispers shifted.

Changing.

Adapting.

You can't protect her. You'll fail again.Just like before.

Kael's shadows flickered uncontrollably.

For the first time—

he looked shaken.

Liora's stomach dropped.

"…they know us."

Not guessing.

Not guessing at all.

Knowing.

The whispering faded suddenly.

Gone.

Like it had never been there.

Silence crashed back in.

Heavy.

Awful.

Neither of them spoke for a moment.

Then—

"…they're not just feeding on magic," Liora said quietly.

Kael nodded once.

"They're learning."

Her chest tightened. "From us?"

"Yes."

That was worse.

So much worse.

Liora looked back at the dead patch of ground.

"They're getting stronger every time they attack…"

"And smarter," Kael added.

A horrible realization settled between them.

If the shadows kept learning—

they wouldn't just hunt randomly.

They'd plan.

Liora swallowed. "So what do we do?"

Kael finally looked at her fully.

Serious.

Focused.

"No more mistakes."

She huffed weakly. "Wow, no pressure or anything—"

"I'm serious."

"I know, I know…"

But something in her expression softened.

Just a little.

"…we figure it out," she said.

Kael studied her for a second.

Then nodded.

"Together."

Far beneath the Heart Tree…

the darkness pulsed.

Stronger now.

More aware.

It had tasted fear.

Doubt.

Memory.

And it wanted more.
