Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Shadows of the Tower of Light

The Tower of Light grew larger as they approached, rising like a spear piercing the sky. The giant crystal sphere at its peak caught the light of Eterra's two suns, refracting it and casting a rainbow halo around it. Within this halo, the stones of the tower gleamed as if alive, ancient runes dancing across their surface. Finis wrote in his journal: "The Tower of Light is a beacon in the midst of the desert. But this beacon does not only guide the way; it also conceals something. Its walls are filled with whispers."

As they neared the tower, the cruelty of the desert gave way to a gentle coolness. The dunes yielded to a road paved with smoothly cut stones. Crystal pillars lined both sides of the path, each crowned with a small sphere of light. Sirius leaped from Finis's shoulder and lunged toward these orbs, but Finis caught him by the scruff and pulled him back.

"Not yet, little friend. This place may be dangerous."

Sirius mewled in protest but then settled back into Finis's arms and began to purr. He had grown considerably over the past week. He was no longer the size of a hand; he was nearly as large as a housecat. His coat gleamed, the golden hue becoming more pronounced, and his tiny claws had sharpened. But what had changed most were his eyes. They no longer looked with mere curiosity, but with intelligence. His attachment to Finis grew stronger each day, and he would not leave his side for a moment.

When they reached the main gate of the tower, the massive stone doors swung open of their own accord. A dim light and the scent of incense drifted out from within. Three figures appeared on the threshold.

The first was a tall, lean, elderly man. He wore a crystal crown upon his head, the symbol of the Tower of Light. His beard was as white as snow and reached down to his waist. His eyes were pale blue, but his gaze was piercing; it felt as though he could read the depths of one's soul. He wore a simple but elegant white robe.

The second was a stocky, broad-shouldered dwarf woman. Her fiery red hair was pulled back into tight braids gathered on either side of her head. She wore armor of mixed leather and metal, and at her hip hung a battle axe even larger than Torin's. Her face was covered with countless battle scars, but her eyes were warm and curious.

The third belonged to a race Finis had never seen before. A tall, slender being with amber eyes and faintly scaled skin. It was clear he was of dragon descent. He had no hair; instead, an iridescent crest ran from the back of his head down his spine. He wore a robe of silk that shifted colors as he moved.

The elderly man clasped his hands together and inclined his head slightly. "Welcome, travelers. I am Master Theron, one of the Chief Scribes of the Tower of Light. With me are Battle Master Brynja and Keeper of Ancient Knowledge, Zephyros. We have been expecting you."

Kael was taken aback. "You were expecting us?"

Theron smiled. "The stars told us long ago that the Last Seed of Albaris would come. Furthermore, we felt the collapse of the Whispering Stones. Vaelen's spirit managed to send one last message."

Finis flinched at the mention of Vaelen's name. "Vaelen... He sacrificed himself. So we could escape."

"We know," Theron said. "And his sacrifice will not be in vain. But first, rest. Your journey has been long and arduous. You have wounds, both in body and in spirit."

Brynja looked at Torin and grinned. "A dwarf brother! And from the Hammerspine clan at that! To come all this way from the depths of the mountains... I'm impressed."

Torin stared at Brynja in astonishment. "You... You're from the Red Anvil clan! The women warriors of your clan are legendary. But I heard years ago that your clan was destroyed in a civil war."

Brynja's face darkened, but then she forced a smile. "We were not destroyed. We merely... scattered. But that is a story for another time. Come inside now."

The interior of the tower was far more mesmerizing than its exterior. The walls, from floor to ceiling, were lined with books, scrolls, and crystal tablets. Staircases hung suspended in the air by an unseen force, carrying visitors to the upper floors. On every level, scribes, warriors, and mages of different races worked, studying ancient knowledge. Finis immediately understood that this was not merely a tower, but a temple of knowledge.

They were given rooms in the tower's guest wing. The rooms were simple but comfortable. From the windows, the endless expanse of the desert was visible. Sirius immediately jumped onto Finis's bed and curled up. The journey had exhausted him as well.

Dinner was served in a large hall. They sat at a long table alongside the residents of the Tower of Light. The food was simple: fresh bread, vegetable soup, dried meats. But for a group that had been surviving in desert conditions for days, it was a veritable feast.

During the meal, Theron studied the group carefully. "Each of you has a different reason for undertaking this journey. But fate has bound you together with Finis Ferrum. Now, as the return of the Shadow Legion draws near, the past and skills of each of you will prove decisive in the coming battle."

Torin frowned. "I'm just a blacksmith. A good warrior, yes, but I'm no part of some prophecy."

Theron nodded. "Not everyone needs to be part of a prophecy, Torin Hammerspine. Your clan has guarded the secrets of ancient weapons for centuries. During the Great Calamity, the weapon masters of Albaris entrusted their most powerful artifacts to the dwarves. That knowledge may still live on in your blood."

Torin looked at his axe in bewilderment. "I... I'm just an ordinary blacksmith. My father was, and his father before him..."

"Did your father ever speak to you of 'The Secret of Iron'?"

Torin's face went pale. "That... That was a children's tale. My grandfather used to tell it. The purest metal in the world, hidden in the heart of fire... But I never thought it was real."

"It is real," Brynja said. "And finding it may be our only chance against the Shadow Legion."

Then Theron turned to Liriel. "You, Liriel. You come from the Silverleaf clan of the Serinwood. Your clan guards the most ancient songs and legends of the elven people. But why did you leave your clan?"

Liriel's eyes filled with pain. There was a long silence. Then, in a trembling voice, she spoke. "My clan... one night, they were destroyed by a darkness that came from the depths of the forest. I, and only I, survived. Because that night, I sang a forbidden song. A song my mother taught me, but which the clan elders had banned. That song protected me from the darkness. But it could not save my clan."

Theron's eyes gleamed. "That song... Was it the 'Lament of Light'?"

Liriel looked up, startled. "How do you know that?"

"Because that song was composed in the final days of Albaris. It is one of the most powerful spells ever used against the Shadow Legion. Your clan was tasked with safeguarding it. And now I understand that the darkness destroyed them for this very reason. To silence that song forever."

Liriel's hands trembled. "So... my clan's death... was because of me?"

"No," Theron said firmly. "Your clan fulfilled its duty with honor. And you, by keeping that song alive, are carrying on their legacy. Now, you must relearn that song and use it against the Shadow Legion."

It was Mira's turn. Mira shifted uneasily under Theron's gaze. "I'm just a gatherer of information. There's nothing to tell about my past."

"Is that so?" said Zephyros, speaking for the first time. His voice was like the sigh of the wind. "You are the last princess of the Lost City of Nephar. You are of the royal bloodline of the cat-folk. Your city was destroyed in one of the first attacks of the Shadow Legion. You were smuggled out as a baby and raised by a thieves' guild. But in your blood, you carry the royal seal of Nephar. That seal is the only way to enter the fortress of the Shadow Legion."

Mira froze. The secret she had kept for years had been laid bare in an instant. Her eyes welled up, but she did not cry. "How... how do you know this?"

"To be the Keeper of Ancient Knowledge is to know everything," Zephyros said. "Your past is not one to be ashamed of, but one to take pride in. And now, it is time to avenge your people."

Finally, Theron turned to Kael. "And you, Kael. The most mysterious of the group. You never speak of your past. But I know. You were a soldier of the Shadow Legion."

Everyone at the table froze. Torin's hand went to his axe. Liriel's eyes widened. Mira looked at Kael as if betrayed.

Kael bowed his head. A long silence ensued. Then, slowly, he spoke. "Yes. I was a soldier of the Shadow Legion. I served them for years. I burned countless villages, took countless lives. But one day... one day, I was ordered to kill a child. A little girl. Her eyes were blue, just like Finis's. I could not kill her. And I fled. Ever since that day, I have lived to atone for the sins I committed."

Finis looked at Kael. The man who had protected him, guided him all this time, was a killer. But he was also a soul burning with remorse.

"Is that why you're helping me?" Finis asked.

Kael looked up, his eyes wet. "Yes. Perhaps, by protecting you, I might find some measure of forgiveness."

Theron stood. "Each of your pasts is stained by darkness. But at the same time, there is a light within each of you. That is why you are here. The only thing that can stop the Shadow Legion is the unity of those who know darkness but choose the light."

Finis looked at Sirius. The cub was asleep under the table, oblivious to everything. But Finis knew that one day this little friend would grow and take his place in this war. Just like his mother, he would fight to protect.

"Training begins tomorrow," Brynja said. "Finis, you will learn to control your power. Liriel, you will rediscover the Lament of Light. Mira, you will learn how to use your royal seal. Torin, you will research the Secret of Iron. And Kael... You will confront your past."

That night, Finis wrote in his journal in his room. The pages filled with the past of each member of his group. Torin's lost clan secret, Liriel's forbidden song, Mira's royal lineage, Kael's dark past... Each was a piece of a puzzle. And Finis was the final piece needed to complete it.

"I understand now that I am not alone," he wrote. "Each of us is running from our own darkness. But perhaps, together, we can overcome that darkness. Sirius carries the legacy of his mother. I carry the legacy of Albaris. And my friends carry the hope of their own peoples. The Tower of Light will teach us not only our power, but also our faith in one another."

He looked out the window. The desert lay in an ice-blue silence of night. But on the horizon, dark clouds were gathering. The Shadow Legion was drawing near.

But tonight, Finis was not afraid. Because he was no longer alone. Sirius slept in his lap, and his friends rested in the adjacent rooms. And tomorrow, a new day would begin.

He closed his journal, stroked Sirius, and shut his eyes. In his dream, he saw a white city. Albaris. And in the city square, people with snow-white hair and blue eyes waved to him. Beside him, Sirius walked proudly, now a mighty lion.

And a voice whispered through the wind: "The light never fades."
