A quiet meeting was being held at dawn in the great hall of the Obsidian Citadel. Finis sat with his friends and new allies in Malachar's former war council chamber. The broken scale symbols of the Shadow Legion still hung on the walls, but the golden and silver reflections of the Twilight Light fell upon them now. It was as if the old order was slowly making way for the new.
Malachar sat at the head of the table. He had shed his Shadow Lord robes and now wore a plain, black tunic. His face had changed since the night before. The infinite darkness in his eyes had given way to human eyes; deep brown, filled with profound thought. But the most striking change was in his posture. He no longer sat like a conqueror, but like a counselor.
"Word of the Obsidian Citadel's fall will spread across all of Eterra within a short time," Malachar said, his voice weary but resolute. "The other lords of the Legion will see this as a threat. And they will likely unite and attack us."
Torin laid his axe on the table. The blade still glowed with a faint golden light. "Let them come. We'll defeat them too."
"It's not that simple," Kael said. "The Legion has hundreds of fortresses. Each one contains hundreds of soldiers, dozens of officers, and at least one lord. If they all attack at once, we cannot defend the Obsidian Citadel."
Malachar nodded. "Kael speaks true. The fortresses in the region I commanded are now leaderless. But the lords in the other regions will act swiftly. Especially Veylar, the lord of the Shadow Keep, and Zareth, the lord of the Tower of Nothingness. They are far more powerful and far more ruthless than I."
Finis quickly took notes in his journal. "Veylar and Zareth... What do we know about them?"
Malachar drew a deep breath. He began to tell them.
"Veylar, the lord of the Shadow Keep, is one of the oldest members of the Legion. But even older than I. It's said he was born in the First Age, when the gods still walked the earth. He is not a pure shadow entity; he was once an elven mage. But he delved so deeply into dark magic that he eventually extinguished his own light completely. Now, he is neither fully alive nor fully dead. Like a ghost, but far more powerful. The Shadow Keep is his laboratory. There, he constantly develops new shadow creatures, new spells, new weapons. Fighting him is like fighting a nightmare."
Liriel's eyes widened. "An elven mage? Which clan does he belong to?"
"The Lost Clan of the Ancient Forest. The ancient enemies of your clan. They joined the Shadow Legion a thousand years ago. Veylar is their last representative."
Liriel clenched her fists. "So the Lost Clan still lives. And in the service of the Legion."
"Yes. And Veylar harbors a special hatred for elves. Because his own clan exiled him for his dark magic. Now, he wants revenge."
Finis continued taking notes. "And Zareth?"
Malachar's face darkened further. "Zareth... He is different. He is the lord of the Tower of Nothingness, and the most terrifying member of the Legion. Because he was never alive. Zareth is a being born of pure nothingness energy. He understands neither light nor darkness. He only desires non-existence, void, silence. His goal is not to establish balance, but to annihilate everything. Even the other lords of the Legion fear him. Because Zareth makes no distinction between ally or enemy. He consumes everything in his path."
"Then why do you allow him to remain in the Legion?" Mira asked.
"Because we cannot control him. And because we need his power. The Tower of Nothingness is the largest source of shadow energy in Eterra. All our fortresses draw their energy from that tower. If we try to destroy Zareth, the entire Legion collapses. But if we don't stop him, one day he will destroy everything."
Finis closed his journal. "Then we must stop Veylar first. Then Zareth. But to do that, we need allies. Not just former Legion soldiers, but the free peoples of Eterra as well."
Elara spoke up. "The Valdorian Resistance will help you. But we are only a small group. Our king collaborates with the Legion. Most of our people are too afraid to speak out. To awaken them, we need a symbol. A beacon of hope."
Finis shaped the Twilight Light in his palm. The light burned in shades of gold and silver, like a calm flame. "Then I will be that beacon. But not alone. All of us together."
Torin stood up. "I will go to the Iron Mountains. To Khazad-Vorn. I will convince my clan to fight against the Legion. The Secret of Iron belongs not just to me, but to all dwarves. They should know this too."
Liriel raised her head. "I will go to the Elven Forests. To the Ancient Forest, to Silverbough, to the Deep Roots. I will unite my clans. I will teach the Lament of Light to all elves. So that the mistakes of the Lost Clan are not repeated."
Mira touched her pendant. "I will go to the remnants of Nefar. I will find the scattered children of my people. The cat-folk were once a great people. We can be great again. To bring down the Dark Tower."
Elara smiled. "I will return to Valdoria. I will grow the Resistance. I will rouse my people against the king. And I will bring you human armies."
Kael looked at Malachar. "And you? What will you do?"
Malachar was silent for a moment. Then, he spoke slowly. "I will go to the other lords of the Legion. I will show them that change is possible. Perhaps some will listen to me. Perhaps some will choose the Twilight Path. But if there are those who will not listen..."
"Then we stop them," Finis said. "But we will always try to talk first."
Sirius stood beside Finis, quietly wagging his tail. He was no longer a cub, but a fully grown lion. His shoulder height reached Finis's waist, and his golden mane rippled in the wind. His eyes were as sharp and intelligent as his mother's. But most of all, his devotion to Finis had not changed. He was still Finis's shadow, protector, and friend.
Finis stroked Sirius's head. "And we... We will continue on the road. To the Shadow Keep, to the Tower of Nothingness, to all the fortresses of the Legion. At each one, we will spread hope."
That day, a historic alliance was forged in the Obsidian Citadel. The Twilight Alliance. Its goal was not to destroy the Shadow Legion, but to transform it. To restore balance. To hold light and darkness together.
Before setting out for the Iron Mountains, Torin approached Finis. The dwarf, with tears in his eyes, embraced him. "I owe you, lad. You helped me find the Secret of Iron. The legacy of my ancestors. Now, I take this legacy to my people."
Finis smiled. "If it weren't for you, I'd have died long ago, Torin. It is I who owes you."
Liriel extended her bow towards Finis. "I have blessed this bow with the magic of the Lament of Light. Carry it with you. Whenever you feel lonely, hold this bow and remember the song. You are never alone."
Finis took the bow and slung it across his back. "Thank you, Liriel. The elven people will be proud of you."
Mira removed her pendant and placed it in Finis's palm. "This is the royal seal of Nefar. My mother's last gift. But now I understand that this seal does not belong to me alone. It is the hope of all the cat-folk. And I will rebuild that hope. But you need a keepsake too."
Finis tried to return the pendant. "This belonged to your mother. I can't take it."
"Take it. Because you have become my family. If my mother knew her daughter had such a friend, she would be proud."
Finis placed the pendant around his neck. The cat's eye stone glowed faintly under the influence of the Twilight Light. "I will never forget her. Or you."
Elara handed Finis a map. "This shows the secret passages and safe houses of the Valdorian Resistance. Wherever you are, use this map. The Resistance is always with you."
Kael was the last to speak. The former Legion soldier stood before Finis and looked into his eyes. "I am coming with you. To the Shadow Keep, to the Tower of Nothingness, wherever you go. Because I made you a promise. I will protect you."
Finis clasped Kael's hand. "I know. And I make you a promise in return. I will never leave you alone."
That evening, a farewell ceremony was held in the courtyard of the Obsidian Citadel. Torches were lit, and songs were sung. Torin bellowed dwarven war chants. Liriel hummed the mournful melody of elven farewells. Mira performed the hunting dance of the cat-folk. Elara sang the freedom song of Valdoria. And Finis recorded everything in his journal.
At midnight, when everyone had retired to their rooms, Finis and Sirius remained alone in the courtyard. Eterra's twin moons shone in the sky. One silver, the other gold. Just like the Twilight Light.
Finis sat down beside Sirius and stroked his head. "Tomorrow, we begin a new journey. But this time, it's not just the two of us. Kael is with us too. And perhaps, we'll find new friends along the way."
Sirius rumbled and rested his head on Finis's knee. He closed his eyes and fell asleep.
Finis took out his journal and opened a new page. Title: "The Twilight Alliance - Dispersal and Rebirth."
"Today, I bid farewell to my friends. Torin, to the Iron Mountains. Liriel, to the Elven Forests. Mira, to the remnants of Nefar. Elara, to Valdoria. And Malachar, to the other lords of the Legion. Each has gone their own way. But I know that one day we will come together again. And on that day, we will change the fate of Eterra."
"Tomorrow, I too set out. To the Shadow Keep, to the domain of Veylar. There, I will confront the last representative of the Lost Clan. And I will show him that change is possible. Or I will stop him."
"But whichever it may be, I will maintain the balance. The Twilight Light will guide me. Sirius will be at my side. And Kael will protect us. That is enough."
He closed his journal and looked at the stars. The Sirius star, as always, was the brightest of all. And beneath that star, Finis slept in peace.
When morning came, three figures departed the Obsidian Citadel. Finis, Sirius, and Kael. Before them stretched the north of the Shattered Fang Mountains, the dark domain of the Shadow Keep. The road was long and fraught with dangers. But they were ready.
For they were travelers of the Twilight Path. And the journey never ended.
