Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Conversation That Changed Everything

Some conversations don't feel important while they're happening.

They feel normal… just like any other.

Until they change everything.

It was late.

One of those nights where silence feels heavier than usual.

Arjun texted first.

Arjun: "Do you ever think… we're a little too close?"

Darini stared at the message.

Her fingers hovered over the screen.

She could've ignored it.

Changed the topic.

Made it light.

But she didn't.

Darini: "Maybe."

That "maybe" opened a door neither of them had planned to walk through.

The conversation stretched.

Longer than usual.

Deeper than before.

No jokes.

No distractions.

Just honesty.

Arjun: "It's weird… I don't talk like this with anyone else."

Darini: "Same."

Arjun: "And when something happens… you're the first person I think of."

That made her pause.

Her heart reacted before her mind could.

For the first time, they weren't just talking about life.

They were talking about each other.

Darini: "What are we even doing?"

Arjun: "I don't know."

Darini: "This isn't just friendship."

A long pause.

Then

Arjun: "Do you want it to be?"

That question sat between them.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Darini had always avoided things like this.

Feelings.

Attachments.

Anything that could break her.

But this… was already something.

And maybe that's what scared her the most.

Darini: "I don't know if I'm good at this."

Arjun: "We'll figure it out."

Simple.

Too simple.

And maybe that's why they said yes.

Not because they were sure.

But because they didn't want to lose what they already had.

They decided to try.

To date.

To give a name to something that had grown silently for so long.

At first, it felt… right.

But not in the way they expected.

The next morning

The messages changed.

Not in words.

But in tone.

"Good morning" felt unfamiliar.

"What are you doing?" felt forced.

There was a new awareness now.

A pressure.

Before, they spoke freely.

Now, they thought before texting.

Before, silence was comfortable.

Now, it felt… awkward.

Arjun tried to keep things normal.

Joked like he used to.

Texted like nothing had changed.

But something had.

Darini felt it more.

Every message felt like it meant something more now.

Every reply felt like it needed to be right.

She wasn't used to this.

She didn't know how to be… this version of herself.

They had taken something effortless

and given it a definition.

And suddenly

It wasn't effortless anymore.

Calls became shorter.

Replies became delayed.

Not because they didn't care

But because they cared too much.

Neither of them said it.

Neither of them admitted it.

But both felt the same thing

Something was off.

That night, the conversation wasn't deep.

It wasn't emotional.

It was just… quiet.

They had crossed a line.

Without knowing what waited on the other side.

And somewhere between trying to hold on

and not knowing how

They began to lose the very thing

that brought them together.

They thought saying "yes" would bring them closer.

But instead

It created a distance they didn't know how to fix.

To be continued...
