Chapter 9: The Stranger's Offer
---
The Slum Ring was quiet before dawn.
Ren woke to the sound of dripping water. His roof had leaked again—a new hole had opened above his straw bed, and water had pooled in the hollow of his pillow. He sat up, wrung out the pillow, and opened his system screen.
Level: 24. XP: 145/540. JC: 1,546. Lifespan remaining: 94 years.
Inventory: Poisonthorn arrows (2), healing potions (3), Heartleaf (4 leaves), serpent meat (5 kg).
He closed the screen. Stood up. His body was sore from yesterday's moving target training—his shoulders ached, his legs were stiff, his fingers were raw from drawing the bow.
But he felt strong. Stronger than he had in weeks.
He walked to the door. The mist was thick today—Breathing Fog, heavy enough to taste. He pulled his collar up and stepped outside.
The mud paths were empty. The children were still asleep. The old men were still dreaming.
Ren walked toward the Root Ruins gate.
---
Rin was at her camp, but she wasn't alone.
A stranger sat by the fire. He was tall, broad-shouldered, with a scar running from his temple to his jaw. His armor was expensive—dark leather reinforced with metal plates, clearly custom-made. A sword hung at his hip, the hilt carved with runes that glowed faintly.
Kite, Mica, and Finn were there too, sitting apart from the stranger, looking uncomfortable.
Ren stopped at the edge of the clearing. His hand went to his knife.
"Who's that?" he asked.
Rin looked up. "Ren. Come sit. This is Commander Vex."
The stranger turned. His eyes were gray, sharp, and they looked directly at Ren's face.
He sees me, Ren thought. No one sees me.
"You're the one they call 'the Stillness,'" Vex said. His voice was deep, calm, measured. "The boy who killed a Thorn Walker alone at level twenty-four."
"I'm no one."
"You're Ren. Level twenty-four. E-rank. Slum Ring. You've been hunting for two years, but you only registered last week." Vex smiled. "I did my homework."
Ren didn't sit. "What do you want?"
Vex gestured to the log across from him. "Sit. I'm not your enemy."
Ren sat. He kept his knife loose in its sheath.
Vex poured him a cup of tea. Heartleaf—Ren recognized the smell.
"I'm the commander of the Mudwall Adventurer's Guild," Vex said. "I've been in this position for forty years. In that time, I've seen thousands of hunters come and go. Most die. Some retire. A few become legends."
Ren drank the tea. It was hot and bitter.
"You're not a legend yet," Vex continued. "But you have potential. More potential than most."
"I'm level twenty-four."
"I know. That's what makes it interesting." Vex leaned forward. "The Thorn Walker you killed. Level forty-eight. Twenty-four levels above you. That's not skill alone. That's instinct. Patience. The kind of thing that can't be taught."
Ren said nothing.
"I'm not here to recruit you," Vex said. "I know you hunt alone. I know you don't want a party. That's fine. But I have a proposition."
"What kind of proposition?"
"There's a Vine King in the Root Ruins. Level eighty-five. Fifty-two hunters dead. The bounty is five thousand coins." Vex set down his cup. "I want you to kill it."
Kite choked on his tea. "He's level twenty-four!"
"I'm aware."
"He'll die!"
"Probably." Vex looked at Ren. "But I don't think so."
Ren stared at him. "Why me?"
"Because you're patient. Because you're invisible. Because you've already killed one Thorn Walker, and you're not dead." Vex stood up. "I'm not asking you to do it tomorrow. Take your time. Train. Level up. But when you're ready, I want you to try."
"And if I succeed?"
"Then you get the bounty. Five thousand coins. Plus whatever you can harvest from the corpse." Vex walked toward the edge of the clearing. "And you get my respect. That's worth something in this town."
He disappeared into the trees.
The clearing was silent.
Then Finn spoke. "That was Commander Vex. The Commander Vex. He's S-rank. He's killed three Crown Beasts."
"I know who he is," Ren said.
"And he wants YOU to kill the Vine King?"
"Yes."
Finn shook her head. "You're not normal."
"Probably not."
---
The morning training was different.
Rin didn't teach traps or archery. She taught survival.
"The Vine King is not a Thorn Walker," she said. "It's older. Smarter. More dangerous. Its vines can crush stone. Its heart-wood is protected by layers of bark that most arrows can't penetrate."
Ren listened. Stored the information.
"It has one weakness," Rin continued. "The heart-wood has a crack. Old wound from a previous hunt. If you can hit that crack—repeatedly—you might kill it."
"Where is the crack?"
"Behind the main vine cluster. You'd have to get within ten feet to see it."
Ten feet. A Vine King's vines could strike from thirty feet.
Ren nodded. "What else?"
"It senses vibration. Not sound—vibration. Your footsteps. Your heartbeat. Your breathing." Rin looked at him. "Your Unseen Presence suppresses those things, but not completely. The Vine King is old. It might still feel you."
"Then I need to be lighter."
"Lighter than light."
Ren stood up. "Teach me."
---
The lesson was walking.
Not normal walking. Walking without vibration.
Rin led Ren to a patch of soft ground near the camp. She scattered dry leaves across the surface.
"Walk across this without making a sound," she said.
Ren stepped onto the leaves. Crack. Crunch. Rustle.
"Again."
He tried again. Better. But still noise.
"Your weight is shifting too fast. Slow down. Feel the ground before you commit."
Ren slowed. His foot hovered above the leaves, then lowered gradually, heel first, then ball, then toes.
Silence.
"Good," Rin said. "Now do it again. Faster."
---
The morning passed in silence.
Ren walked across leaves. Across gravel. Across wet mud. Each time, he focused on making no sound, no vibration.
By noon, he could cross a patch of dry leaves without a single crack.
Rin nodded. "Acceptable. Now do it while carrying your bow."
Ren picked up his bow. Walked.
Silence.
"Now do it while notching an arrow."
He notched an arrow. Walked. The arrow didn't rattle. The bow didn't creak.
"Good. Tomorrow, you do it while your heart is racing."
---
The afternoon was for stamina.
Rin made them run. Not fast—steady. A slow jog through the ruins, weaving between pillars, jumping over roots.
"Your body needs to be strong," she said. "Not just your skills. Your body."
Kite complained. Mica pushed through. Finn struggled.
Ren ran. His legs burned. His lungs ached. But he didn't stop.
"Faster," Rin said.
They ran faster.
"Faster."
Ren's vision blurred. His heart pounded. But he kept moving.
This is what it takes, he thought. This is what it takes to kill the Fog Drinker.
He ran.
---
The sun was setting when they stopped.
Ren collapsed against a pillar, breathing hard. His legs were shaking. His throat was dry.
Kite lay on the ground, staring at the sky. "I think I'm dying."
"You're not dying," Rin said. "You're living."
"That's worse."
Mica sat beside Ren. She was sweating, but she was smiling.
"You did well today," she said.
"So did you."
"I'm trying." She looked at him. "Do you really think you can kill the Vine King?"
Ren thought about it. "Yes."
"Even though it's level eighty-five?"
"Levels don't matter. Weak points matter. Patience matters." He looked at his hands. "I have both."
Mica was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "I believe you."
---
The walk back to the Slum Ring was cold.
The mist had thickened—Breathing Fog, heavy and damp. Ren walked slowly, carefully, his footsteps silent on the wet ground.
Unseen Presence: Active.
His heartbeat slowed. His breath quieted.
The fog parted around him.
He reached his room. The roof was still leaking. The straw bed was still wet. The wooden box under the bed held 1,546 JC.
Ren sat on the bed. Opened his system screen.

He closed the screen.
Five thousand coins for the Vine King. Plus the bounty. Plus the heart.
That's almost eight thousand total.
Sixty-five thousand minus eight thousand is fifty-seven thousand.
Closer.
He lay down. Water dripped onto his forehead.
The jungle breathed outside his window.
Ren closed his eyes.
