Chapter 3 - "The shadow in the house "

The monsoon had settled over the city, turning the streets into a grey, watery maze. For Sia, however, the gloomy weather felt brighter than usual. For the past two weeks, Rey had been her constant shadow—a comforting presence in her chaotic life.

He wasn't just a stranger she had met in the rain anymore; he was becoming the person she looked forward to seeing every single day.

"You're late again, Sia," her father, Deepak, remarked as she entered their small apartment, shaking the rain from her umbrella. His voice was weaker today, and the smell of old medicine hung heavy in the air.

"I'm sorry, Papa. The bus was delayed," Sia lied gently. She couldn't tell him yet that she had spent thirty minutes sitting in a dented silver car, laughing at Rey's jokes. "But look, I brought your favorite herbal tea. Rey sent it for you."

Deepak frowned, his tired eyes searching his daughter's face. "This Rey... he seems to have a lot of time for a struggling intern. Why is he so interested in us, Sia? We have nothing."

Sia knelt beside her father's chair, taking his thin hands in hers. "He's just a good person, Papa. He's struggling too. He knows what it's like to have no one."

Deepak sighed, a heavy sound filled with years of regret and secrets. "Just be careful. Men with nothing often have the most to hide."

Outside the building, parked in the shadows where the streetlights didn't reach, Reyansh sat in his "cheap" car. He watched the flickering light of Sia's apartment through the windshield. His fingers tapped rhythmically on the steering wheel, a habit he had whenever he was close to a kill.

His phone buzzed. It was a text from his private investigator: "The pharmacy has officially stopped the supply of Deepak's specific heart medication. He will run out by tomorrow morning."

A dark, cold smirk touched Reyansh's lips. Everything was moving according to his design. He wasn't just waiting for Sia to fall in love; he was creating a situation where she would have no choice but to depend on him.

The next morning, Sia was in a state of panic. She had visited three pharmacies, and all of them gave her the same answer: "Out of stock. The manufacturer has halted production."

She stood on the sidewalk, tears blurring her vision, when the familiar silver car pulled up.

"Sia? What happened? Why are you crying?" Rey asked, jumping out and rushing to her side. His face was a mask of perfect, heart-wrenching concern.

"The medicine, Rey... I can't find it anywhere. Papa needs it, or he... he won't make it," she sobbed into his chest.

Reyansh held her, his arms wrapping around her in a protective embrace that felt like heaven to Sia but was a calculated move for him. He could feel her heart racing against his chest, her vulnerability laid bare.

"Shh, listen to me," he whispered, lifting her chin so she had to look into his eyes. "I have a friend who works in a medical warehouse across the city. Let me call him. I'll get it for you, I promise. I won't let anything happen to him."

"Really? You would do that?" Sia asked, her eyes filled with hope.

"I'd do anything for you, Sia," he said, and for a moment, his voice was so intense that it sent a shiver down her spine.

An hour later, Rey "miraculously" returned with the rare medication. He had actually ordered his assistant to fly it in from another state hours ago, but Sia didn't need to know that. To her, he was a hero. He was her savior.

"Let me come up with you," Rey suggested as they reached her apartment. "I want to meet the man who raised such a brave girl."

Sia hesitated for a second, then nodded. She wanted her father to see that there were still good men in the world.

As they walked into the small, cramped living room, Deepak looked up. His eyes met Reyansh's. For a split second, a flicker of recognition passed through the old man's eyes—a ghost of a memory from ten years ago—but Reyansh's humble smile and messy hair quickly masked it.

"Papa, this is Rey. He's the one who found your medicine," Sia introduced him, her face glowing with pride.

Reyansh stepped forward, bowing his head respectfully. "It's an honor to meet you, Sir. Sia has told me so much about you."

Deepak stared at the young man, his intuition screaming that something was wrong. But as he looked at his daughter's happy face, he forced a smile.

Reyansh sat on their moth-eaten sofa, talking about his "struggles" and his "dreams," all while his eyes took in every detail of the room—the family photos, the cracks in the walls, the weakness in Deepak's limbs.

He was like a wolf invited into the sheep's den, and the sheep were thanking him for it.

As Reyansh left that evening, he paused at the door, looking back at Sia. "You're part of my life now, Sia. And I take care of what's mine."

Sia smiled, her heart full. She didn't realize that in Reyansh's world, "taking care" of something often meant owning it, breaking it, and finally, discarding it.

The trap was no longer just on the road. It was inside her home.
