Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Fractured Designation

Chapter 7: Fractured Designation

The moment her skin met his, Raveene's eyes widened until the corners ached.

Beneath her fingertips, she finally understood the impossible physics of the creature. It wasn't just skin; it was a topographical nightmare—a jagged, textured fusion of organic dermis, oxidized metallic bronze, and something as cold and unyielding as subterranean rock.

The surface was sturdy, rough, and frighteningly resilient, feeling less like a living organism and more like an ancient, unnatural monument that had somehow learned to generate heat.

Jesus, I'm actually touching it, she thought, the realization slamming into her with the weight of a physical blow. Her hand began to tremble against the rough-hewn cheek of the titan, but the beast remained hauntingly still. It didn't flinch, didn't roar, and didn't snap her neck. It simply stood there, looming over her in the pale moonlight, gazing down with those silver-violet eyes that seemed to be processing her presence with a desperate, burgeoning recognition.

Fear still hummed in her veins like a live wire, but it was being eclipsed by a strange, magnetic pull she couldn't explain.

Oh my goodness, Raveene, if your dad saw this, what the hell would he think? He would literally kill you himself, she realized, the image of Governor Hale's stern, authoritative face flickering briefly in her mind.

Yet, she didn't pull away. Instead, her fingers began to move of their own accord, tracing the line of its jaw with the slow, reverent care one might afford a wounded, prehistoric predator. She moved around the jawline, her touch light, almost as if she were petting a massive, misunderstood animal.

Suddenly, a strange hum began to resonate beneath its skin. It was a deep, sub-harmonic vibration that felt like an electric current, so potent it nearly forced her to stagger backward. As she began to reflexively withdraw her hand, the creature emitted a low, dissonant sound—a sharp, mechanical keen that felt like a protest.

It was as if the creature couldn't bear the loss of contact. Frowning slightly, Raveene pressed her palm back against the rough-textured skin, and the sound ceased instantly.

A small, bewildered smile tugged at the corners of her mouth despite the gravity of the situation. It was a bizarre, heartbreaking realization: the monster didn't want her to let go.

The pulsing beneath its skin continued, and Raveene's mind began to race through a thousand different theories, none of them making sense.

What the hell is going on here? she wondered, her hand never leaving its cheek.

Her lips shook. Her eyes blinked relentlessly darting to and fro all over the monster's gigantic frame.

"I don't know what kind of life you've lived or what the hell you are," she whispered, her voice a ghost of a sound in the cavernous, silent room, "but don't worry. I'm going to figure things out. I will figure you out. I promise."

She continued to trace the rigid contours of its face, watching the glowing orbs above her. For a moment, it felt as though the beast were struggling—as though there were two forces inside that massive frame fighting for control, one trying to reach out and the other screaming for blood.

Her heartbeat accelerated the moment this realization dawned on her.

A sound began to rumble from its mouth, but it was nothing like the roars described in the nightly news broadcasts. It was unnatural and fragmented, a sequence of tones she couldn't identify.

She leaned in, still staring at those terrifying orbs of silver and violet.

"Are you trying to talk to me?" she asked, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

The sound grew louder, though it remained indecipherable. It was a rough, brooding rumble that felt like it was originating from the deepest parts of its skull, vibrating down through its throat. Raveene's frown deepened as she observed the movement of the thick, bronze-plated muscles in its neck.

"Why do I have a feeling you want to tell me something?" she murmured, more to herself than the Titan before her.

She let her hand slide down from its neck toward its massive chest, her fingers dancing over the armor-like plating of its skin. She traced every rigid contour and reinforced muscle, her brain feeling like it was on the verge of fracturing under the weight of the confusion.

How the hell did you become like this? she wondered. Was this a choice, or a sentence?

Just as the thought crossed her mind, the rumble at the base of its throat thickened. It became rougher, more guttural, escalating until the sheer volume of the vibration forced her to tilt her head back up to meet its gaze swiftly.

She moved her hand back to its cheek, her touch acting as a grounding wire for the storm inside him. Then, out of that monstrous, metallic throat, a fractured, broken, and unmistakably human voice finally spoke.

"Raveene... Hale."

The air seemed to vanish from the room. Raveene's brain instantly scrambled into static, a sharp gasp of pure disbelief escaping her as her eyes nearly doubled in size.

No way. Oh my goodness. He did not just say my name. She bit down hard on her bottom lip, her lungs burning as she panted, her heartbeat accelerating to a dangerous tempo.

Before she could stop it, a laugh bubbled up in her throat—a shocked, broken sound that had nowhere to go. It was the laugh of someone who had stepped off a cliff and found themselves walking on air, the sheer delirium of the impossible finally setting in.

"You know my name?" she stammered, her voice thick with disbelief as she searched the violet depths of its eyes. "How... what... how did you—"

Before she could complete the sentence, the air around them suddenly began to shimmer and warp. A wave of intense, localized pressure slammed into the space, returning the world to a state of absolute, agonizing pause.

It felt as though time itself had suffered a glitch. Raveene blinked, the pale moonlight burning against her retinas, and in the split second her eyes closed and opened again, the towering figure was gone.
